Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth
to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is
formed when the sea itself freezes ; rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away
from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a
direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because
they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been
known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the
Atlantic Ocean.

unexplored and uncharted, Until about a century ago, the deep-ocean
floor was completely inaccessible, hidden beneath waters averaging over
3,600 meters deep. Totally without light and subjected to intense
pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earth's surface, the
deep-ocean bottom is a hostile environment to humans, in some ways as
forbidding and remote as the void of outer space.
지구상의 모든 육지면적의 2,5배 정도로 큰 해저(바다의 바닥)는
오늘날까지도 탐험되지 않았고 지도로 그려지지 않은 거대한 미개척지이다.
1세기 전까지만 해도, 깊은 해저는 평균 깊이가 3,600 미터나 되는 물밑에
숨겨져서 완전히 접근 불가능했었다. 빛이 완전히 차단되고, 지표상에서보다
수백 배 강한 압력을 받고 있는 깊은 해저는 인간에게는 하나의 적대적인
환경이었고, 어떤 면에서 보면, 우주의 저 빈 공간처럼 그렇게 금지되고 먼
곳이었다.
힘들겠지만 물밑대화를 통해 외교적으로 해결하는 노력을 계속하는 게 최선이다.
