모르겠다'는 말이다. 그러니까 I don't understand. 또는
I don't know what you are talking about. 또는
I don't get(or dig) it. 또는 I don't follow you.등과 같은 말이다.
You are talking over my head.란 말은 글자 그대로 해석하면
'네 말은 너무 어려워서 못 알아듣겠다'는 말인데 여기서 head를
신체적 의미의 '머리'가 아니라 정신적인 의미의 '머리' 다시
말하면 '머리가 좋다'고 할 때의 '머리' 즉 '지능 수준'으로
생각하면 '너는 내 지능 수준 이상으로 말하고 있다.'가 되어
우리말 '네 말은 너무 어려워 못 알아듣겠다.'는 말이 된다.
이 말은 약간 빈정대는 뜻으로 흔히 쓰이는 말이므로
점잖은 상대에게 함부로 쓰면 않 된다. 예를 들어 비즈니스
얘기를 하는데 미국 사람이 어려운 단어를 많이 써서 알아듣기가
곤란하다. 이럴 때 I don't follow you very well. 또는
Would you mind using simpler words?
'좀 더 쉬운 말을 써 주실수 있겠습니까?' 라고 말하는
것이 좋다. 어떤 영화를 봤는데 무슨 뜻인지 잘 모르겠다.
이럴 때 This movie is over my head. '이 영화는 내 지능수준
위에 있다.' 즉 '이 영화는 어려워서 모르겠다.' 는 말이 된다.
It's beyond me도 I don't understand.와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다.
I can't do it.과 같은 뜻으로 쓰이기도 한다.
It's anybody's guess. 예측이 불가능하다.
* 위의 말은 '누구든지 추측하기 나름이다'란 말인데 '의견이 분분해서
확실한 추측이 불가능하다'는 뜻이다. 그리고 in a dead heat란 말도
있는데 이것은 neck and neck이라 해서 '막상막하(우열을 가리기 힘든
상태)'를 가리킨다. 비슷한 의미로 Your guess is as good as mine이란
말도 흔히 쓴다. '너 추측이나 내 추측이나 같다' 다시 말하자면
'확실한 것은 잘 모르겠다'는 뜻이다. 그리고 이번 대선에서 누가
당선될 것 같냐고 미국기자에게 물어봐서
My money is on Kim Dae Jwung라고 말했다면
I'll bet on Kim Dae Jung 즉 '나는 김대중에게 돈을 걸겠다'는 말과
같은 뜻이다. money가 나온 김에 on the money란 말도 알아보면
이것은 perfect 또는 accurate와 같은 뜻으로 미국인들이 즐겨
쓰는 말이다. on the nose도 똑같은 뜻으로 자주 쓰인다.
Your guess was right on the money.라 하면 '너 추측은
정확하게 맞아 떨어졌다'는 말이다.
cf) bleeding 피를 흘리다.
ex) If you cut your finger, it will bleeding.
He was slowly bleeding to death.

도의 의미를 갖는 말이다.

- 창피합니다.
한마디로 feel small이면 된다. 그러나 상대방에게 누를 끼쳤을 때에는 '
몸둘 바를 모르겠다'는 뜻의 "I feel embarrassed."를 써도 무방하다.
feel 다음에 형용사가 오는 것에는 feel low (기분이 처지다). feel
awkward(어색하다), feel cheap (천하게 느껴지다)등이 있다.
...역례...I feel small.
I feel ashamed.

'나는 그것 이상 말할 수 있는 것을 모르겠다' 또는 '그것은 내가 말할

5. What can I say?
직역하면 "내가 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠느냐?"는 뜻이니까 "난 할
말이 없다.","뭐라고 말해야 좋을지 모르겠다."는 뜻이 된다. 다
른 말로 하면 "I'm lost for words."가 된다.

A discussion on the LINGUIST discussion list about names for @ in various
languages produced an enormous response, from which most of the facts which
follow are drawn.

Some have just transliterated the English name 'at' or 'commercial at'
into the local language.

What is interesting is that nearly all the languages cited have developed
colloquial names for it which have food or animal references.

In German, it is frequently called Klammeraffe, 'spider monkey' (you can
imagine the monkey's tail), though this word also has a figurative sense
very similar to that of the English 'leech' ("He grips like a leech").

마찬가지이다)이 쓰이기도 하지만 일반적으로는 snabel a(코끼리 코가 달린 a)라고

Dutch has apestaart or apestaartje, '(little) monkey's tail' (the 'je' is
a diminutive); this turns up in Friesian as apesturtsje and in Swedish
and Finnish in the form apinanhanta.
네덜란드말에서는 (작은)원숭이꼬리라는 의미의 apestaart 또는 apestaartje가
있다.(je는 약한 느낌을 주는 접미사) 이 말이 프리즐랜드어로는 apesturtsje가

Finnish also has kiss"anh"anta, 'cat's tail' and, most wonderfully, miukumauku,
'the miaow sign'.

In Hungarian it is kukac, 'worm; maggot', in Russian 'little dog',
in Serbian majmun, 'monkey', with a similar term in Bulgarian.
헝가리말로는 kukac(벌레, 구더기), 러시아어로는 작은 개, 세르비아어로는
majmun(원숭이, 불가리아어도 비슷하다)이 쓰인다.
Both Spanish and Portuguese have arroba, which derives from a unit of weight.
스페인어와 포르투갈어에서는 중량단위에서 온 arroba가 있다.
In Thai, the name transliterates as 'the wiggling worm-like character'.
태국에서는 꼬물거리는 벌레 모양의 글자로 직역되는 이름을 쓴다.
Czechs often call it zavin'ac which is a rolled-up herring or rollmop;
the most-used Hebrew term is strudel, from the famous Viennese rolled-up
apple sweet.

히브리어로는 비인의 유명한 요리인 말린 애플스위트에서 온 strudel이 많이 쓰인다.
Another common Swedish name is kanelbulle, 'cinnamon bun', which is rolled up
in a similar way.

The most curious usage, because it seems to have spread furthest from its
origins, whatever they are, is snail.
말의 기원에서 멀리 떨어져 있어 보이면서도 널리 퍼져있어 신기하게 보이는
용법으로 달팽이가 있다.
The French have called it escargot for a long time (though more formal
terms are arobase or a commercial), but the term is also common in Italian
(chiocciola), and has recently appeared in Hebrew(shablul),
Korean (dalphaengi) and Esperanto (heliko).

In English the name of the sign seems to be most commonly given as at or,
more fully, commercial at, which is the official name given to it in the
international standard character sets.

Even so, as far as English is concerned at is likely to remain the standard
name for the symbol.

But there is evidence that the sign itself is moving out from its Internet
heartland to printed publications.

Recently the British newspaper, the Guardian, began to advertise
a bookselling service by post, whose title (not e-mail address)
is "Books@The Guardian". Do I detect a trend?
