(1) 추석에는 이와 같이 여러 가지 의미가 있기 때문에 흔히 외국인들은 추석을 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이게 된다. 추석은 추수에 감사하고 가족들이 서로 모여 음식을 나누기는 하지만 추수감사절과 똑같은 명절은 아니다. 추석을 '가을 달맞이 축제'라고 부르는 것도 알맞지 않다. 이 날 한국사람들에게는 조상을 추앙하는 일이 더욱 중요하기 때문이다. 어쩌면 오늘날 추석에 관한 가장 중요한 것은 추석이야말로 가장 한국적인 존재라는 사실이다. 진정한 주체성을 발견하고 그를 확인하려는 데 한국인의 관심이 고조되고 있는 오늘날 한국의 문화에 깊이 뿌리박고 있는 추석은 그 의의가 자못 크다 하겠다.

(ANS) Because there are so many levels of meaning to Chusok, foreigners often have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion. It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.
Koreans will soon celebrate Chusok, the biggest holiday for
ancestral worship and family reunions. This year, the Chusok
holidays fall Sept. 26-29.
조상을 모시고 친척들이 다시 모이는 최대의 명절, 추석이 얼마남지
않았다. 추석연휴 기간은 오는 26-29일까지.
* 부활절(Easter)의 유래
원래 북유럽 토속신앙에서 유래함. 기독교가 유럽에 전파되기
전에 북유럽인들은 봄과 일출의 여신인 Eostre를 섬겼다고 한다.
매년 봄에 그들은 새생명이 깨어나는 것을 축하하기 위해 이 에
오스트레 축제를 열었는데 나중에 기독교가 전파되고 난 다음에
태양이 솟아오르는 것과 그리스도의 부활을 연결시켜서 부활절
을 Easter라고 부르게 되었다고 한다.
# 부활절의 유래와 풍습 - 부활과 십자가 사건을 중심으로
- 예수가 십자가에 못박히기 전날에 제자들과 최후의 만찬을 열
었다. 이날은 유대교 최고의 명절인 유월절이기도 하였다. 그래
서 초기의 기독교인들은 유월절에 부활절을 축하하였다. 그러나
이들은 유월절은 일요일에 해당되지 않았기 때문에 불만이 있어
서 얼마동안은 제각기 다른날에 부활절을 지내곤 하였다.
A.D.325년에 교회의 지도자들이 천문학자들의 도움을 받아 부활
절을 확정하게 된다. 그들은 춘분이 지나 첫 보름의 다음 일요
일을 부활절로 정하여 오늘에 이르고 있다. 당시엔 보름달이 상
당한 의미를 가져서 성대한 부활절을 축제일로 갖고자 가족과
친척을 찾아 먼길을 여행하는 사람들에겐 달이 중요한 것이다.
- 부활절 달걀 : 옛날 토속신앙에서 다산을 의미한 것으로서 고
대 페르시아인이나 그리스인 중국인들은 달걀을 봄 축제때에 교
환하는 풍습이 있었다고 한다. 그러다가 기독교시대엔 예수가
무덤을 깨고 부활하는 의미가 가미되어 오늘날 부활절엔 달걀이
필수가 된 것이다. 달걀에다가 여러가지 색깔의 물을 들이는 것
도 고대부터 내려오는 傳承이라 한다.
- 부활절 토끼 :(Easter Bunny) 토끼 역시 다산하는 동물이기
때문에 새 생명의 상징으로 여겨왔다. 오늘날 어린이들은 토끼
모양의 사탕을 먹으면서 부활절 바구니(Easter Basket)에 부활
절 계란(Easter Egg)를 담아온다.

Ch'usok, which falls on August 15 of the lunar calendar, is
perhaps the biggest national holiday in Korea. this year
Ch'usok will fall on the 27th of September. On that day, you
will learn many things that are associated with this holiday
through various form of media.
음력 8월 15일은 한국의 가장 큰 명절 중의 하나인 추석입니다.
올해는 9월 27일이 추석인데 그 날 여러분은 다양한 형태의
매체를 통해서 추석과 관련된 많은 것들을 알게 될 것입니다.
Ch'usok is also called Chungch'ujol. This literally means
"midautumn" day.
추석은 '중추절'이라고도 불리는데 이는 '가을의 한가운데 날'
이라는 뜻이지요.
Ch'usok is a period where separated family members gather
to discuss their lives while enjoying the newly harvested
grains and fruits.
추석에는 흩어져 살던 가족들이 모두 한자리에 모요 각자의
생활에 대해서 얘기하면 새로이 수확한 곡식들과 과일들을
즐깁니다.
The most important activity done at Ch'usok is to give
thanks to ancestors and also to give thanks to Mother nature
for providing a bountiful harvest.
그러나 추석날 하는 가장 중요한 일은 조상님들과 풍요로운
곡식을 수확할 수 있게 한 자연에 감사를 표하는 일이지요.
After changing into the hanbok, the family busily prepare
dishes with the newly harvested grain. Then this is offered
to the ancestors as a way of saying thank you. This rite is
called ch'arye.
추석에는 온 가족이 한국의 전통 의상인 한복으로 갈아입고
새로이 거두어들인 곡식으로 분주히 여러 가지 음식을 차려
놓은 다음 조상에게 경의를 표하는 의식인 '차례'를 지내지요.
When offering ch'arye, You will always find certain kinds of
food such as: kimch'i, meat, fish, walnuts, persimmons, dates,
pears, apples. And Ch'usok would not be completed without
songp'yon. To those who are not familiar with this dish, it
is half-moon shaped and filled with stuffing made from
sesame seed and sugar. The dish is always steamed on top
of pine needles.
차례를 지낼 때 오르는 음식은 김치, 고기, 생선, 호두, 감, 대추,
배, 사과 그리고 추석의 대표적인 음식인 송편을 빼 놓을 수 없
습니다. 송편을 잘 모르시는 분들을 위해 설명을 드리면 송편은
반달 모양처럼 생긴 떡으로 떡 안에는 깨와 설탕이 들어 있습
니다. 송편은 항상 소나무 잎 위에서 찌는 음식이지요.
After the ch'arye, all the family members gather to go to the
graves of their ancestors. They go there to pay their
respects and afterwards they clear up the surrounding area
by pulling weeds.
차례를 지내고 난 다음 가족 모두 조상의 묘를 찾아가서 그 분
들께 경의를 표합니다. 그런 다음 잡초를 뽑아 묘지 주위를
깨끗하게 하지요.
There are many games and dances associated with Ch'usok,
and in the past these activities where done in a communal
setting.
추석과 관련된 여러 가지 게임이나 춤들이 있는데 과거에는 이
러한 활동들이 이웃간의 공동 활동으로 행해졌습니다.
The most famous activity of Ch'usok is kanggangsuwollae
which is a combination of a song and dance where people
hold hands and spin to the rhythm of the songs. In one sense,
it can be compared to square dancing.
추석의 가장 대표적인 놀이에 '강강수월래'라는 춤이 있는데 이
것은 노래를 부르면서 그 노래의 리듬에 맞추어 사람들끼리 손
을 잡고 원을 그리면서 추는 춤이지요. 어떤 면으로는 미국의
'스퀘어 댄스'와 비교될 수 있습니다.
The contents of the song, kanggangsuwollae is about
happiness, love and longevity.
강강수월래라는 노래는 행복, 사랑 그리고 장수를 기원하는
가사로 이루어져 있지요.
씨름 much like wrestling is a hand to hand combat sport between
two opponnents.
레슬링하고 비슷한 씨름은 두명의 상대가 도구없이 하는 스포츠입니다
The objective of the match is to throw the opponent to the ground.
시합의 목적은 상대방을 바닥에 눕히는 것 이지요.
If any parts of the body besides the feet of the wrestler touches
the ground he loses the match.
만약 씨름하는 사람의 신체 가운데에서 발 이외의 부분이 바닥에 닿으
면 지게 됩니다.
THe best way to picture 씨름 is to combine the conventional wrest
-ling with a little bit of judo and a little bit of 스모wrestling.
씨름을 연상하는 최선의 방법은 전형적인 레슬링에 약간의 유도와 약
간의 스모 레슬링을 더한것이라고 생각하면 아마 조금 이해가 됩니다.
But unlike the other types of wrestling mentioned above a wrestler
taking part in a 씨름 match must bind his loins and the upper thi
-gh of his right let with a two foot long cloth called '샅바.'
하지만 지금 언급한 것과 다르게 씨름 선생님들은 '샅바' 라고 부르는
길이가 2피트 정도 되는 천으로 오른쪽 다리하고 허벅지 위 쪽을 묶게
되지요.
One wrestler wears a red 샅바 while the other wears a blue 샅바.
한 선수는 빨간색의 샅바를 매고 다른 선수는 파란색의 샅바를 맵니다
The 씨름 match begins with the two participants kneeling down on
the ground facing each other.
씨름 경기에서는 두 명의 선수가 서로 얼굴을 맞대고 바닥에 무릎을
꿇은 상태에서 시작을 합니다.
Each wrestler grabs a hold of the샅바 at the loins with his right
hand while grabbing the 샅바 at the thigh with his left hand.
각 선수는 오른 쪽으로는 허리의 샅바를 잡고 왼 손으로는 허벅지의
샅바를 잡게 되지요.
The two participants then stand up and try to get the opponent on
the ground by employing various tactics and skills.
두 명의 선수는 일어서서 여러 가지 전술과 기술로 상대방을 바닥에
쓰러뜨리려고 하는 것이지요.
As to the origins of 씨름 it is believed to have gained its popul
-arity approzimately 1500 years ago as paintings of this sport we
-re discovered on a wall in a 고구려 tomb.
고구려 시대의 무덤에 있는 벽화로 본 씨름의 기원은 약 1500년 전에
성행을 한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
씨름 was a sport that was enjoyed by people in all levels of the
society from the king to the lowly servants.
씨름은 왕에서 신분이 낮은 하인까지 모든 계층의 사람들이 즐긴 스포
츠였지요.
And during the 신라 and 고려 periods 씨름 became a part of annual
festivity. On every fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month call
-ed '백중' the biggest '씨름' contests were held.
그리고 신라와 고려 시대에는 씨름이 연례행사의 일부가 되었지요. 백
중날이라고 부르는 매년 음력 7월 15일에 가장 큰 씨름대회가 열렸죠.
