Lesson 8 Endangered Animals

The tiger is Korea has been extinct for a long time.

Now there are less than 5,500, making them an endangered species.

The tiger and the gorilla are only two of the many endangered animals.

This comes after a new report warns of global warming could melt North Pole ice by the year 2100,
driving species such as polar bears to extinction.

* drive A to extinction A를 멸종시키다 cf. extinction (생물 등의) 사멸, 절멸

Some species of animals have become extinct because they could not adapt to a changing environment.

Some types of animals, the jaguar, for example, have been killed off to the point that very few still exist.
A number of these rare animals live in areas where new dams are planned.
In many cases, they could become extinct.
It would be sad if we lost these animals forever.
For this reason, environmentalists work to protect animals so that they can reproduce
until their numbers increase to a safe level.
One solution is to create preserves, large areas of land or water where animals and fish are protected.

Advised about the miserable situation of pandas who have been driven out of their homes, thousands of people will contribute money to save the pandas' natural habitat.
Similarly, “Save the whale” campaigns have been in progress for years, and millions of dollars have been spent to help hunted whales.
Currently, in many areas, bats are endangered, but don't expect a campaign to save them from extinction.
Bats just don't have the appeal of whales and pandas.
Most people are so repulsed by bats that wildlife organizations have been reluctant to encourage a campaign to help them; they are convinced that no one would be interested.

Many scientists have long believed that either a change in climate or widespread disease killed the world’s huge animals, such as the woolly mammoth.
Some evidence suggests, though, that these theories may be incorrect.
In Australia, scientists have dug up bone and eggshell fossils that indicate a massive die-off of large animals about 46,000 years ago.
This extinction occurred after humans arrived on that continent about 52,000 years ago.
These time frames suggest that people are responsible for the animals' disappearance.
Similar evidence comes from North America.
Humans arrived there about 13,000 years ago.
Approximately 1,200 years after their appearance, about thirty species of large animals were gone.

Dr. Ward, a famous paleontologist specializing in mass extinction, says:
“We have finally said out loud what we have thought for so long.
Life, at least complex life, is rare in the universe.”
His colleague Dr. Brownlee comments:
“People say the sun is a typical star, but that's not true.
Almost all other environments in the universe are terrible for life.
It's only in the Garden-of-Eden like Earth that it can exist.”

Many species of insects are on the verge of extinction.

[ Clues to Dinosaurs' Demise Sought ]
The rock and dust kicked up by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago were not enough to kill the dinosaurs, according to researchers―but the debris may have sparked a deadly global chemical reaction in the atmosphere.
New studies show the Chicxulub impact crater on the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is smaller than once thought, making dinosaur extinction difficult to explain completely.
Researchers presented those findings Sunday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting.
"If you rely on little pieces of debris actually clobbering organisms, then you're in trouble," said Virgil "Buck" Sharpton of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Since 1980, research on the dinosaurs' disappearance has focused on the 125-mile crater and the 10-mile-wide asteroid believed to have created it.
Dust from the impact was thought to have blocked out sunlight for years.
Now, however, drilling around the Yucatan crater indicates the presence of carbonates and sulfate rocks.
The new theory is that these were vaporized by the asteroid impact, a process that would have released chemicals that produce sulfur and the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
The sulfur compounds would be especially toxic, Sharpton said.
"They do nasty things.
They form little globules that persist in the atmosphere for some considerable amount of time―decades to a hundred years," he said.
"They also mix with water in the atmosphere and produce sulfuric acid."

So besides old theories about a nuclear winter-type global cooling, researchers believe the giant oxygen-breathing reptiles also may have choked on carbon dioxide and suffered showers of caustic acid.
"How do you initiate the global crisis? It had to be atmospheric chemistry of some sort," Sharpton said.
"That's the only way you can transport the effect globally of something that dumps the majority of its energy into a single spot on the Earth's surface."
Rock and dust alone from Chicxulub probably would not have b

Nearly all of us now know - or think we know - how the dinosaurs perished:
some 65 million years ago, a giant asteroid or comet struck the earth, spewing huge amounts of dust and debris into the air.
That dust, according to a widely accepted theory first proposed by Nobel laureate Luis Alvarez, was circulated by the winds and enshrouded the earth for months, blocking sunlight and causing temperatures to plummet.
As a result, the dinosaurs, and 70% of all other terrestrial species, were wiped out.

But this scenario was rudely challenged last week by Kevin Pope, a former NASA scientist.
Reviewing recent studies of atom-bomb blasts and analyses of particles in strata at the 65 million-year level, he concluded in Geology that most of the dust particles were too large to have remained suspended in the air for many months.
The finer particles that stayed airborne would not have blocked enough sunlight to cause mass extinctions.

Pope speculates instead that soot from the worldwide conflagrations, sulfate aerosols and other impact phenomena were to blame.
His findings prompted such headlines as ALVAREZ TEAM WAS WRONG and DUST DIDN'T DO IT, and heartened the relatively few scientists who still contest the Alvarez theory.
그의 발견은 ALVAREZ TEAM WAS WRONG와
Others, however, dispute Pope's analysis and say his methodology was faulty.
While acknowledging other contributory factors, they still believe dust was the major component of the sun-blocking shroud that dispatched the dinosaurs.

Tools and hand bones excavated from the Swartkrans cave complex in South
Africa suggest that a close relative of early humans known as
Australopithecus robustus may have made and used primitive tools long
before the species became extinct 1 million years ago. It may even have
made and used primitive tools long before humanity's direct ancestor,
Homo habilis, or "handy man," began doing so. Homo habilis and its
successor, Homo eretus, coexisted with Australopithecus robustus on
plains of South Africa for more than a million years.
Homo habilis 와
Australopithecus robustus

Australopithecus robustus were more heavily built ― more "robust" in
anthropological terms ― than their successors. They had broad faces,
heavy jaws, and massive crushing and grinding teeth that were used for
eating hard fruits, seeds, and fibrous underground plant parts. They
walked upright, which would have allowed them to carry and use tools.
Australopithecus robustus
Most experts had previously believed that Home habilis
were able to supplant Australopithecus robustus because the former's
ability to use tools gave them an innate superiority. The discovery that
Australopithecus robustus also used tools means that researchers will
have to seek other explanations for their extinction. Perhaps their
reliance on naturally occurring plants led to their downfall as the
climate became drier and cooler, or perhaps Homo habilis, with their
bigger brains, were simply able to make more sophisticated tools.
Australopithecus robustus

For almost 140 million years, dinosaurs ruled the land, sky and sea.
Dinosaurs came in sizes and shapes suited to every corner of the world.
Then, approximately 65 million years ago, these huge reptiles died out
completely. Few mysteries have ever excited the imaginations of
scientists as much as this great extinction. Over the years, scientists
have developed many theories to explain this event. There of the most
common explanations are a gradual change in the Earth's climate, a lack
of food, and the Earth's collision with a large asteroid.
