thief는 남의 소유물을 슬쩍 가져가는 사람을 말하며 멸시하는 말이다.

robber는 남의 집, 재산, 신상을 침범해서, 폭력을 사용해서라도 값진 물건을 빼앗아 가는 사람을 가리킨다.

칼이나 총 따위로 위협하든가 그런 것을 사용해서 드러내놓고 강도질하는 경우에 미국에서는 오늘날 이런 짓을 행하는 사람을 a hold-up man이라고 부르고, 이런 강도 행위를 a holdup이라고 부른다.
bandit는 강도나 복면강도(masked robber)들이 약간 멋 부려 범행을 저지를 때, 이들을 보통 bandits라고 부르지만, 이것은 신문용어로 일반담화에서나 글에서는 사용되지 않는다. 일반담화나 글에서 bandits라고 하면 멕시코 무법자들(Mexican outlaws)을 가리킨다.
gangster는 가장 흔히 쓰이는 말로 흉기를 가진 폭력단(armed gang)의 일원, 특히 한 명의 두목이 지배하는 짜임새가 단단한 조직체에 속하는 한 사람을 가리키거나, gangster처럼 포학하게 법을 위반하는 강도나 살인범을 가리킨다.
burglar는 지금은 약간 예스러운 맛이 나는 말이며 특히 밤에 남의 집에 침입해서 도둑질을 하는 자를 말한다.
