이미 한국어가 된 [레이디]는 주로 [숙녀]라는 의미로만 쓰여지고
있다. 그러나 lady 는 본시 좀더 폭㉠은 의미를 가지고 있다.
예를 들어서 land+lady 의 landlady 는 [(하숙집이나 여관의)여주
인]을 말하며 [숙녀]와는 거리가 멀다 하겠다.
cleansing lady 라고 하면 [청소부]를 가르킨다. janitor라는 말도
있지만,이것으로는 남녀의 구별이 안되기 때문에 여자 청소부를 말
할 때에는 cleansing lady 또는 lady janitor라고 한다.
woman janitor라고 하지 않는다. 회사에 누군가가 면회왔다면,
Some lady is here to see you. (어떤 숙녀가 당신께 면회왔다.)
라고 누군가가 말해줘서 도대체 누구일까 하고 나가보면 [숙녀]와
는 무관한 아주머니 한분이 기다리고 있다.
바로 눈앞에 초라한 옷차림의 여인이 있다고 치자. 그사람을 가리
켜서 this woman,that woman 하는 것은 결코 좋은 말투가 못된다.
역시 this lady,that lady 라고 해야겠다. 상대방이 앞에 있는
상황에서 그녀를 woman 이라고 하는 것은 실례가 되기 때문이다.

전치사이기 대문에, 그 뒤에 명사나 대명사는 물론 오지만, 「be

대부분 딱딱한 느낌의 문장에 사용되는 일이 많다. 「do nothing
but+원형」이 되면 「~이외에는 아무것도 하지 않는다」라는
것으로부터 「~만 하고 있다」가 된다.
