Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

⊙ Etiquette...
Tiket

“ You have such good manners ” 《
※ “ Where are your manners ? ” 《

'Eat humble pie'

All living things, both plants and animals, must feed on other plants or animals.
This process is called a food cycle and green plants are the beginning of this cycle.
Every green plant makes food from the sun's energy and many animals depend directly upon them for food.
These plant eaters are often small animals.
At the next stage in the food cycle are the animals that eat the plant eaters.

Evidence that eating chocolate does not cause *acne comes from two studies:
one at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the other by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Their research showed some interesting results.
They found that there was no difference in the skin condition between the people who ate chocolate and those who did not eat chocolate.
There is also no proof that chocolate is the cause of tooth decay.
In fact, it is believed that the cocoa butter in chocolate forms a coating over teeth that may help to protect them.

The size of a movie popcorn container can affect how much you eat.
People eat more if portion sizes are bigger:
“We found that the people were given big bags of popcorn ate roughly 50 percent more than the people who received smaller bags,”
said researcher Brian Wansink, a professor at the University of Illinois.
Asked to guess how much they had eaten, the two groups answered the same.

It's not so crazy to eat nuts after all.
The US Food and Drug Administration recently affirmed that eating just a handful of nuts per day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
Sure, they're fatty, but the fat is primarily the good kind, and nuts fill you up,
since they're high in fiber and protein.
Studies show they may even help prevent cancer.
So grab a handful as a snack, put some in yogurt or work them into your meals.

“Super Size Me” is a documentary film on a guy who ate only hamburgers for a while.
It was intended to show how harmful fast foods are to our health.
I believe the experiment is highly educational.
The results of the experiment are truly shocking and I hope this documentary will cause people to be aware of the problem of obesity.
I suggest schools should show this movie in classes.
Although it may be hard for kids to believe such results,
they need to learn that they have to be responsible for what they eat.

Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

If necessity is the mother of invention, error is the father.
Thousands of foods we eat, products we purchase, and machines we operate came from lab mistakes and lucky accidents.
After a political cartoon illustrated a small bear encountered by President Theodore Roosevelt on a hunting trip,
children came to call their bears “Teddy.”
If a war economy had not required the nation to find a substitute for rubber,
consumers might have not experienced the joy of stretching and bouncing Silly Putty, a kind of toy made by accident.

I hear the elephant eating fruit just outside the cottage.
Gently pushing aside the mosquito net, I rise from the bed and walk quietly through the dark to the washroom, which has a tiny window.
All I can see in the window is a large eye, like a whale's eye, blinking at me in the morning light.

The Chinese eat a healthy, plant-based diet.
A joint study found that although the Chinese diet varies from region to region,
it generally includes a lot of rice, grains, and fruit.
Animal products are eaten sparingly.
In southern China, for instance, almost every meal includes a big bowl of rice.
People usually eat a vegetable with the meal, perhaps some fruit, and maybe some fish.
Pork and chicken are eaten only on special occasions.

George Roth made a deeper study of calorie restriction.
He said that eating significantly less food keeps blood sugar levels lower and allows body cells' protective mechanisms to work better.
One of his studies showed that calorie restriction benefits cells by slowing a damaging process that harms the structures of living cells.
George Roth

My uncle started his business from nothing.
Now, he's a billionaire.
Though he's a man of means, he still lives a simple life.
He always says to me, “We have to be thrifty and save money for a rainy day.”
And he is really industrious.
He usually gets up at four in the morning and goes for jogging along the riverside.
And he is really sensible about what he eats.
He never overeats himself and touches junk food.

Signs of globalization are everywhere.
From the foreign cars we drive to the foreign food we eat.
Today, the products we buy come from all over the world.
The capital investment that creates these products flows from one country to another with such ease as has never before been seen.
And with these products, came new cultural ideas.
Baseball, Americans' favorite sport, was being challenged by a global import, football, what Americans call soccer.
On the other hand, America influences other countries as well.

Elephants are also surprisingly good at solving problems.
An Indian farmer who kept elephants discovered this fact, to his misfortune.
He had noticed that his elephants were eating his bananas at night.
No fence could keep out the elephants, of course, so he decided to tie bells on them.
Then he would hear them when they came to eat the bananas and he could chase them away.
A few mornings later, however, the bananas were all gone, though he had heard nothing at night.
When he checked the elephants he found that they had played a trick on him.
They had filled the bells with mud so they would not make any noise!

You can help relieve your hard-of-hearing companion from straining to catch your words when dining out by selecting a seat in a large room with carpeting and drapes, away from the walls and kitchen.

People with hearing loss and hearing aids can best digest a conversation when background noise is absorbed by soft surroundings.
A friend with severe hearing loss may also prefer a well-lit restaurant, so she can follow your lip movement and facial expressions ―and you'll both be able to see what you're eating.

However, you may still need to rephrase―not repeat―sentences so your companion can pick up more of what you say.

One day, at a Washington Senators baseball game, someone in the large party in the

The male suicide rate is about four times as high as the female rate. But
women attempt suicide nearly three times as often as men;they succeed less
often because they use less lethal methods, such as taking pills, while men tend
to favor guns.

In its typical feeding position, a sea otter swims along on its back as
it uses a rock to crack the shellfish on which it feeds. Then, tucking the
rock into a pocketlike fold of skin under its arm(in which it also often
keeps a supply of extra food),it will turn and dive to the bottom for more
shellfish. Otters have been seen playing with rocks and shells, throwing
them from one paw to another for hours at a time.
mother otters usually shelter their young on their chests. If they have to
leave the pups for any length of time, mother otters may wrap them in the
strand of a kelp plant to keep them from drifting away. Although an otter
is large at birth-five to six pounds-it receives maternal care until it is
three or four years old, by which time, like its parents, it can dive to
depths of 100 feet or more.

Women who say they are indifferent to clothes, like men who say they do
not mind what they eat, should be distrusted; there is something wrong.
And men who sneer at women's passionate concern about dress should be
banished to the woods. For my part I delight in women when they go into
a conference-huddle over new clothes.
They seem to me then most themselves and the furthest removed from my sex.
They are at such times completely in their own world.

We eat many foods in order to live and grow. We eat grains, vegetables,
fruits, nuts, meat, and fish. We are so accustomed to a varied diet that
we usually take it for granted that other people also have a variety of
foods. Many things determine what foods people eat. Climate plays a part.
So does soil. In addition, there are many other factors which play their
part, such as the amount of money and crop land available.

The aged live with enforced leisure, on fixed income, subject to many
continual illnesses. They also live in a culture that worships youth.
They are often treated like outcasts by a kind of culturally prejudiced
attitude. However, when I was growing up, there were rules of courtesy
towards all adults. I still believe old people deserve respect for their
experience and wisdom. I sometimes fear that mine will be the last
generation to have a sense of what growing old means.

The processes of agriculture, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, our social relations, were all at one time under the dominion of religion and its high priests.
Gradually they have passed out of its control and become subjects for scientific study.

They may sleep during the most severe weather and wake to roam and eat during milder weather.

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts. The
reasons for roosting communally are not always obvious, but there are
some likely benefits. In winter especially, it is important for birds to
keep warm at night and conserve precious food reserves. One way to do
this is to find a sheltered roost.

As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of
organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other
benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for
folklore.

There was a dog which was fond of eating eggs. Mistaking a shell- fish
for an egg one day, he opened his mouth wide and bolted it with one
great gulp. The weight of it in his stomach caused him intense pain.
“It serves me right,” he said, “for thinking that anything round must
be an egg.” People who rush things without using judgment run
themselves into strange and unexpected dangers.

If you ask most children what their favorite treat is, they will answer
- " Ice cream !". There is nothing like a delicious ice-cream cone on a
hot, summer day. Every year Americans eat more than four billion
ice-cream cones. Did you know that the ice-cream cone was invented by
accident ? St. Louis was having a world's fair in 1904. Ice cream was a
big seller. One person selling ice-cream ran out of dishes and didn't
know what to do. Luckily, a person nearby, who was selling waffles,
suggested rolling a waffle and putting the ice cream inside. It was an
instant success.
St. Louis
