(1) 「당치도 않아」는 Not at all; Not in the least[or
slightest]. 등으로 말할 수 있다. 부정어를 포함하지 않는
형태로는, Far from it이 된다. 직역은 「~에서 멀다」로서, 즉
「~인 것은 아니다; 결코 ~은 아니다」의 의미가 된다. from은
전치사이기 대문에, 그 뒤에 명사나 대명사는 물론 오지만, 「be
동사+형용사」가 올 때에는 be동사의 동명사형(being)은 보통
생략된다.
<여기에 관계되는 몇가지 예를 보겠습니다.>
·그의 설명은 아주 만족할 만한 것은 아니었다.

말한다. merely나 only 대신에 nothing but을 사용해도 좋다.
nothing but ~은 「~이외의 아무것도 아니다」라고 하는
것에서부터, 「단순히; 약소한(명색뿐인)」의 의미가 된다.
대부분 딱딱한 느낌의 문장에 사용되는 일이 많다. 「do nothing
but+원형」이 되면 「~이외에는 아무것도 하지 않는다」라는
것으로부터 「~만 하고 있다」가 된다.
