Finally, the bulbs were lit and the tree became a sparkling, glittering mass.
The tree was very proud of its beauty.
“If only the other trees in the forest could see me now, how envious they would be!” thought the tree.
But Christmas was soon over and the pine tree was discarded and thrown into the yard.
It lay there sadly, its dry needles falling off one by one.
Finally, a man came and chopped it up for firewood.
In the fireplace, the wood blazed brightly, but it sighed so deeply that every sigh was like the short explosion from a gun.
The tree thought of its life in the forest as it burned and turned into ashes.

Some people felt that the city playground was falling apart.
They wanted to make it into a nice, safe place for children to play.
One mother put this note in the newspaper.
“Wanted: People to fix a city playground.
We need people to paint and build, to watch the children, and to make food for the workers.
Call 123-1234 if you can help.”
On the work day, many people came to the playground.
Some painted the swings.
Others built a sandbox, tables, and benches.
People planted bushes and flowers.
When it was all done, everyone was proud of the new playground.

For Ken Rogers, happiness was a cottage on a small lake near Auburn, Indiana.
As a young factory worker, Rogers was determined to give his three children summers they would always remember.
So he cleared a plot of land, built a cottage, and tied a $1 rope to a willow tree for a swing.
Rogers did everything himself because at the time he was in poverty.
Now, when his grown children visit, it's his labors of love that they recall most fondly.

Irish McCauley, at five-foot-two, was the smallest and most picked-on

with daffodils protruding from every pocket. "They grew overnight, sir," he

The sign said: "Beware! These monkeys steal spectacles."

An old Greek myth tells the story of a farmer. The farmer sowed seeds

Now, one might ask, why should anyone want to avoid anything that would introduce God into a scientific theory;
and the answer is that God makes a poor addition to any scientific theory precisely because God explains too much.

About 200 million years ago, the plates at the Earth's surface formed a
"supercontinent" called Pangaea. When this supercontinent started to
tear apart because of plate movement, Pangaea first broke into two large
continental masses with a newly formed sea that grew between the land
areas as the depression filled with water. The southern one ― which
included the modern continents of South America, Africa, Australia, and
Antarctica ― is called Gondwanaland. The northern one ― with North
America, Europe, and Asia ― is called Laurasia. North America tore away
from Europe about 180 million years ago, forming the northern Atlantic
Ocean.

permanently frozen. Even when summer temperatures were above freezing
and the top inches of earth became saturated with water, the soil below
remained frozen into a permafrost, as hard as rock. When water flowed
upon the surface of permanently frozen tundra, it made overland travel
extremely difficult.

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions
not only possible but pleasant and convivial. The growing custom of
regularly assembling from afar the representatives of all kinds of
groups ― not only for political conventions, but also for commercial,
professional, learned, and avocational ones ― in turn supported the
multiplying hotels. By mid-twentieth century, conventions accounted for
over a third of the yearly room occupancy of all hotels in the nation;
about eighteen thousand different conventions were held annually with a
total attendance of about ten million persons.

A distinctively American architecture began with Frank Lloyd Wright, who
had taken to heart the admonition that form should follow function, and
who thought of buildings not as separate architectural entities but as
parts of an organic whole that included the land, the community, and the
society. In a very real way the houses of colonial New England and some
of the southern plantations had been functional, but Wright was the
first architect to make functionalism the authoritative principle for
public as well as for domestic buildings.

Australopithecus robustus were more heavily built ― more "robust" in
anthropological terms ― than their successors. They had broad faces,
heavy jaws, and massive crushing and grinding teeth that were used for
eating hard fruits, seeds, and fibrous underground plant parts. They
walked upright, which would have allowed them to carry and use tools.
Australopithecus robustus
Most experts had previously believed that Home habilis
were able to supplant Australopithecus robustus because the former's
ability to use tools gave them an innate superiority. The discovery that
Australopithecus robustus also used tools means that researchers will
have to seek other explanations for their extinction. Perhaps their
reliance on naturally occurring plants led to their downfall as the
climate became drier and cooler, or perhaps Homo habilis, with their
bigger brains, were simply able to make more sophisticated tools.
Australopithecus robustus

In colonial America, people generally covered their beds with decorative
quilts resembling those of the lands from which the quilters had come.
Wealthy and socially prominent settlers made quilts of the English
style, cut from large lengths of cloth of the same color and texture
rather than stitched together from smaller pieces. They made these until
the advent of the Revolutionary War in 1775, when everything English
came to be frowned upon.

The sacred objects of the family were under the control of the oldest
female, but the actual ceremonies were conducted by her brother or son.
Women owned the rooms in the pueblo and the crops, once they were
harvested. While still growing, crops belonged to the men who, in
contrast to most other Native American groups, planted them. The women
made baskets and pottery; the men wove textiles and crafted turquoise
jewelry.

Each village had two chiefs. The village chief dealt with land disputes
and religious affairs. The war chief led the men in fighting during
occasional conflicts that broke out with neighboring villages and
directed the men in community building projects. The cohesive political
and social organization of the Anasazi made it almost impossible for
other groups to conquer them.

Ancient people made clay pottery because they needed it for their
survival. They used the pots they made for cooking, storing food, and
carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to early
cultures that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient
civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of decoration,
materials, glazes, and manufacture, the more advanced the culture
itself.

New England was favored for a number of reasons; the stony soil discouraged
farming and made manufacturintg more attractive than elsewhere.

A tribe of Plains Indians, the Assiniboins, had the distinction of hunting on
foot. During the winter months the hunters wore snowshoes to chase the buffalo
into the deep snow, where the animals were easily killed. The Assiniboins were
thrifty people who utilized all of their dead prey: the meat was their food;
their clothing came from the hides; their tools and weapons came from the bones
and horns. Once the other parts had been disposed of, the children used the
buffalo's ribs as sleds.

A story might begin for Edith Wharton with ether the characters or the
situation. If the situation came fisrt, she was always very careful to let it
lie in her mind until it had brought forth of itself the people it needed. It
was an idiosyncrasy of her creative mind that her characters always came to her
with their names, which she could not chance except at the cost of losing her
hold on that destiny would be expressed. Although her characters were portayed
in many settings and situations, they all reflected, by the often tragic outcome
of their lives, her profound conviction that no human could be happy if that
happiness was rooted in the wretchedness of another.

There is an interesting story that tells how moths adapted to their surroundings.
In 1700s light-colored trees grew in England, and on these trees rested bright-colored moths.
Since the moths were the same color as the trees, birds could not see the insects and eat them.
Then black soot from many factories made the trees in the cities a darker color.
Birds could then see the bright-colored moths and eat them.
After many years, the moths were born a dark color in order to survive in this environment.

An extensive road system united the highlands where they lived and coastal cities but made them vulnerable to the Spanish, who, after conquest, enslaved the people in mining and food-producing ventures.

Over the next two years, he made the ear protectors with a flat metal spring that fit over the head.
