지켜보고 있는 시계는 더디게 돌아가게 마련이다. 「지켜보는 솥은 끓지
않는다」는 서양 속담도 있지 않은가. 퇴근시간만 기다리며 시계를 연거푸
들여다보는 사람을 'clock watcher'라고 한다.
Mr. Brown:Have you finished the draft?
Mr. Smith:Oh,not yet.
Mr. Brown:Why do you keep looking at your watch? You must be a clock
watcher.
Mr. Smith:Such a long day today!
Mr. Brown:You know they say,"A watched pot never boils."

어떤 일이 the 11th hour, 11시에 일어난다는 것은 최후의 순간에
일어난다는 의미입니다. 이 말은 신약성경 마태 복음 20장의 예화에서
유래한 표현이지요. 포도원 주인과 일꾼들에 대한 이 예화에서 'the
11th hour' 는 포도원 주인이 일꾼들을 고용한 마지막 시간입니다. 그
런데 아침부터 일한 사람이나 11시에 고용한 사람이나 같은 품삯을 받
았기 때문에 11시는 품삯을 받을 수 있는 마지막 기회인 셈이지요. 바
로 이런 의미에서 the 11th hour는 '마지막 순간, 가까스로' 라는 의
미를 갖게 된 것입니다. 예문을 들어 볼까요. 그는 마지막 순간에 마
음을 바꾸었습니다 라고 하면 He changed his mind at the 11th hour.
라고 할 수 있고요. 그 여자는 가까스로 일을 마쳤습니다 라고 하면
She finished the work at the 11th hour. 라고 할 수 있습니다.
