English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

→ 「나의 아주머니는 마치 나를 자기 아들처럼 사랑해 주신다」 My aunt loves me as if I were her own son.
→ 「그는 아무 일도 없었던 것처럼 보였다」 He looked as if nothing had happened.
→ 「그는 아픈 것처럼 보인다」와「그는 아픈 것처럼 보였다」의 차이는 「~보인다」라는 현재와「~보였다」의 과거 차이인데, 이것을 영어로 옮길 때는 look와 looked로만 달라지지, as if 후반까지 시제를 달리할 필요는 없다. He looks as if he were ill./ He looked as if he were ill.
→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 형용사를 붙여, 특수한 모양의 태양이라고 말할 때는 부정관사를 쓴다. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.

[比較] apt, likely, liable, prone
apt(자칫～하기 쉬운)와 likely(～함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
likely는 어떤 모욕적인 말에 대해서 재치 있고 아주 날카로운 대답을 한 경우 다음처럼 말할 수 있다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다. 바로 아무개가 말함직한 대답이었다.)
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
likely는 단순히 가능성을 나타내지만, 어떤 특수한 형편이나 환경에 쓰인다. 예를 들면, 11월 말경의 시카고의 날씨가 눈이 내릴 낌새를 보이는 경우, It is likely to snow today.라고 할 수 있다. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.처럼 일반적인 경향을 나타낸다.
또한 apt가 「잘하는, 재주가 있는」을 의미하는 경우에는 to-부정사를 거느리지 않고 at+동사의 -ing형을 취해서 He is apt at painting.처럼 쓰이기도 한다.
liable(자칫 ～하기 쉬운)은 부담이 될 일이거나 불리한 일을 당하기 쉬운 것을 나타낸다. liable과 apt는 뜻이 가깝기 때문에 서로 바뀌어 쓰이는 수가 있지만, liable은 주어에 대해서 부담 또는 불리함을 줄 가능성이 있는 경우에 사용되는 것이 원칙이다. We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)는 남이 엿듣는 것이 우리에게 불리한 것임을 표시한다.
He is apt to promise more than he can perform.에서 apt는 그의 습관적인 경향을 말하지만, 여기에 liable을 쓰면 그가 그렇게 하는 것을 부끄럽게 여기는 뜻이 포함된다. 마찬가지로 Some of the colors are liable to fade.는 퇴색하는 것이 빛깔에 손색이 되는 것을 나타낸다. 영국 현대 관용에서는 위에서 본 것처럼 liable을 사용하고 있지만 좋은 일과 언짢은 일에 두루 사용되었다. 이 용법은 현대 미국에 남아 있어 We are liable to be in Chicago next week.처럼 likely의 뜻으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 liable은 「책임을 지는, 의무가 있는」이라는 법률적인 뜻〈Every citizen is liable for jury duty.(국민은 누구나 배심원으로 설 의무가 있다.)/ The surety is liable for the debt of his principal.(보증인은 본인의 부채를 갚을 의무가 있다.)〉에 국한해서 사용하는 것이 가장 무난하다고 말한다.
prone(～하기 쉬운)은 거의 피할 수 없는 성질이나 성벽을 암시하며 반드시 to-부정사를 취하지 않는다.

subject는 가장 일반적인 말로 토론·연구·논문·예술 따위에서 취급되는 것에 대해 쓰인다.
She is the chief subject of conversation at present./ What is the subject of his painting?/ Juvenile delinquency is a broad subject.
theme은 범위가 한층 좁은 말로 일반적인 subject의 어느 국한된 또는 특별한 부분을 말하며, 문학 작품·예술 작품에서 연마되고 발전되는 제목, 또는 그 작품의 기조가 되는 주제(motif)를 구성하는 제목을 말한다.
Water-falls are from very early times a favorite theme for the painter./ The theme of a need for reform runs through his work.
topic은 화제·논제이며 theme과 마찬가지로 범위가 좁은 말로 한 작품·저작의 어느 일부분에서 취급되는 진술을 말한다.

또한 수필에 있어서와 같이 개인을 위한, 또는 일단의 사람들이 토론을 하기 위해 선택한 일반의 관심을 끄는 화제를 말한다.

trace는 동물, 수레 따위가 지나간 후에 남는 한 줄로 난 발자국, 바퀴 자국을 말한다.

vestige는 어원적 의미는 ‘발자국’이지만, 지금은 이 뜻으로는 쓰이지 않는다. 과거에 존재했던 것의 증명, 증거가 되는 것으로서 사소하나마 실제로 지금도 잔존해 있는 것을 가리키며 과거에 있었던 일을 구체적으로 상기시키는 어떤 깨진 조각, 부스러기, 나머지 따위에 대해서 trace보다 더 많이 쓰인다.

Bond-price valuation method: 채권시가평가제
Fund에 편입된 bond price(채권가격)를 market에서 받을 수 있는
current price(시가)로 평가하는 제도. 즉 fund에 편입된 bond price를
매일매일의 시세대로 평가해 fund의 standard price(기준가격)를 계산하는
것이다.
지금까지는 ITCs(투신사)가 채권형 펀드에 편입된 bond(채권)를 일률적으로
평가한 후 경과이자를 붙여 원금과 이자를 돌려줬다. 이는 standard price를
산정할 때 bond를 매입할 당시의 가격을 사용해 bond price가 fixed price
가격보다 오르면 차익을 챙기고 손실이 나면 손해를 보면서 고객에게
제시했던 earning rate를 맞춰 interest rate를 지급하는 것으로
고객들은 fixed interest rate를 받는 셈이어서 은행 저축과 별로 다르지
않았다. 그러나 bond-price valuation method가 적용되면 ITCs 대신 고객이
stock investment(주식투자)와 마찬가지로 투자위험과 고수익을 모두 떠안게 된다.
Interest rate가 내려 bond price가 오르거나 운용에 성공해 매매차익을
거두면 investors' earning rate(고객 수익률)가 올라 가지만
interest rate가 올라 bond price가 떨어지거나 dishonored bond(부실채권)에
잘못 투자하면 손해를 본다.

북회귀선을 the northern tropic 이라 하지 않고
왜 the tropic of Cancer 라고 부르는지요?
⇒ 회귀선을 tropic 이라 하죠. 회귀선이라 하는 것은 태양이 남쪽 또는 북
쪽으로 하늘의 적도로부터 가장 멀리 떨어져 있는 지점을 말합니다.
지도면상 위도 23˚27´에 나타나는 북회귀선을 the tropic of Cancer라
