담배불 좀 빌릴수 있을까요?(담배를 피우고 있는 사람)
* light는 lighter는 물론 match 그리고 담배에 붙어있는
불까지도 의미한다.
따라서 got a light라 하면 '성냥이나 라이터 가진 거 있냐
-담배를 피우고 있지 않는 사람' 란 뜻이다.
그런데 singles bar(독신자들이 모여 데이트 상대를 찾는 술집)
같은 데서 남녀가 서로 접근하기 위해 흔히 하는 말을 일컷는다.
cf) Can I bum a cigarette? 담배 한 개비 얻을 수 있을까요?
Do you mind putting out your cigarette? 담뱃불 좀 꺼 주실래요?
Please don't litter(어지르다) with your cigarette butts.
-담배꽁초를 함부로 버리지 마세요.

Put down의 여러 가지 뜻.
* 새로 집이나 차를 산 사람을 보고 우리는 '현금은 얼마나 냈느냐?'고
흔히 묻곤 한다. 이 때 How much did you put down? 라고 하면 된다.
여기서 put down은 '얼마를 down payment로 지불한다.'는 뜻이다.
put down은 원래 글자 그대로 무엇을 '내려놓다'는 뜻이다.
가구점에서 산 의자를 배달해 온 배달원에게 put it down here. 라고
하면 '그거 여기 내려 놓으세요'란 말이다. 그러나 동양인이라고
깔보는 백인에게 Don't put me down because I'm an Oriental.이라고
하면 '내가 동양인이라고 깔보지 말라'는 말이 된다.
그러니까 put down은 '깔보다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
look down on도 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 또 put down은 장부에
'기록하다'는 뜻도 된다.
Don't forget to put it down in your checkbook은
'그것을 수표책에 기록하는 것을 잊지 마세요'란 말이 된다.
또 병원에 예약을 할 때 We'll put you down for Friday 2 P.M.
'금요일 오후 2시로 기록(예약)해 두겠습니다.'란 뜻이 된다.
그리고 put down은 반란 같은 것을 '진압하다'는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
The Chinese goverment ruthlessly put down the student uprising.은
'중국 정부는 학생 봉기를 무자비하게 진압했다.'는 말이다.
cf) trade in '헌 물건을 새 물건 가격의 일부로 계산해서 내놓다.'

Don't take it out on me! 나 한테 화풀이하지 마세요
* 어떤 회사 중역이 위 상급자에게 야단 맞은 뒤 열 받아 있을 때
말단 사원들은 그 사람의 눈치를 보게 된다.
이 때 Give him a lots room.이라고 말한다면
'그의 기분을 상하지 않도록 주의 해라'는 의미가 된다.
여기서 room을 '공간'이라고 생각하면 된다.
즉 '그에게 많은 공간을 주라'는 말은
'그에게 걸리지 않게 가까이 가지 말고 멀리 하라'는 의미가 된다.
Be careful not to get on his nerves.는 말과 같은 뜻이라 할 수 있다.
그리고 상급자에게 욕을 먹은 사람을 보고
He got chewed out by his boss. 라고도 말을 하곤 하는데
미국 속어 chew out은 '야단친다'는 뜻이다.
Don't chew me out for notjing.은
'아무것도 아닌 걸 가지고 야단치지 마세요'란 의미.

Don`t hog the photocopier.
복사기를 독점하지 마세요.

Don`t force yourself.
무리하게 드시지 마세요.

Don`t beat your brains out on it.
그것 때문에 골머리 앓지 마세요.

오해하지 마세요.

John, Jack, Tom처럼 '아무개'죠.
Tom, Dick, and Harry 기억나시죠 "어중이, 떠중이" "개나 소나"
clever dick 약은 남자, 잘난체하는 사람
fly dick 날아다니야 될 만큼 바쁜 남자는 '형사'
영화 Dick Tracy(트레이시 형사) 기억나시죠?
정복 경찰관은 harness bull, harness cop, harness dick
cop은 경찰이 구리(copper) 단추를 달았기 때문에 생긴 말이죠.
harness는 말의 마구, 사람의 제복입니다.
house detective, house dick은 경비원이죠.
그리고 참 이거 해야 되나 말아야 되나
Dick은 Richard의 애칭이기도 하지만 남성의 성기를 나타내기도
하거든요. 흔히 거시기의 의미로 쓰이니까 함부러 dick, dick하지 마세요
dick이 sexual intercourse를 나타내기도 합니다.
dickhead는 무슨 의미인지 짐작 가시죠. 바보입니다.
dick은 맹세라는 의미도 있습니다. 거시기에 걸고 하는 거니 오죽하겠습니까?!

거의 사용 안합니다.(의미가 좀 나쁘다고 하는군요)
본문에 나온 "Can I be honest ?"가 좋겠죠?

"Don't whistle until you are out of the woods." 를 직역하면 "숲
을 벗어나기까지 휘파람을 불지 마라" 란 말이 됩니다.
여기서 '숲'이 무엇을 상징하느냐는 것을 이해하면 쉽게 이해가 됩니
다.
'숲'은 바로 '위험 지역'을 뜻합니다.
오늘날이야 고속도로가 이리저리 뚫려서 동서 어디를 다녀도 어려울
것이 없지만 미국의 개척 당시 사람들이 서부로 향해 갈 때 숲이란 위
험 바로 그 자체였습니다.
인디언이 있고 맹수가 있으며 길을 알 수 없는 어두운 숲(dark woods)
은 개척자들이 마음을 놀 수 없는 곳이었지요.

에 바라보는 그들이, "We are now out of woods(이제 숲을 벗어났다)."
라고 안도의 숨을 쉬었을 때의 그 심정이 이해가 갑니다.
여기에서 'woods'가 '위험 지역'을 상징하게 되었고 "Don't whistle
until you are out of woods." 가 "위험에서 벗어나기까지 마음을 놓
지 마라" 란 뜻이 되는 것입니다.
휘파람은 기분이 좋을 때 부는 것이니까 'don't whistle,' 즉 '휘파람
을 불지 마라'는 말은 '마음을 놓지 마라' 가 되는 것이지요.
같은 발상으로 'in woods'는 '위험에 처하다'란 말이 됩니다.
"We're still in woods." 는 '우리는 아직도 위험 속에 있다." 란 말
이지요.
