Comdex Korea Kicks Off Next Week
컴덱스코리아 내주부터 열려
Comdex Korea, one of the largest computer information and communication
events in the world, will kick off at the Convention and
Exposition Center on Aug. 24 and run through the 27th.
세계최대의 컴퓨터정보통신전시회 중 하나인 컴덱스코리아가 COEX에서
8월 24일 개최되어 27일까지 열릴 예정이다.
A total of 110 local and foreign companies will exhibit a dazzling array of
products and services including internet virtual trading systems,
internet services, and superior speed digital home appliances.

초고속디지털가전제품 등의 화려한 제품과 서비스를 전시할 예정이다.
Included in this high-tech extravaganza will be MP3 players that play
up to 20 digital music files, wall mounted, wafer thin TV sets,
and seminars and technical conferences on LINUX, the world's first free
operating system.

While many of the over 200,000 attendees at Comdex will likely be
discussing Microsoft's legal woes, they also will be checking out demos
of the long-delayed Windows 2000. And this year, they will have the
opportunity to see the alternative Linux operating system, which is
being featured at an adjacent Linux Business Expo, a major coup for the
renegade software.

Fiorina also announced plans to release a public version of HP's e-Speak
software Dec. 8. The e-Speak technology acts as a sort of universal
translator, allowing different types of computer programs to communicate
with each other.
피오리나 회장은 자사의 'e-스피크 소프트웨어' 공개 버전을 다음달 8일부터
공급할 계획이라고 밝혔다. e-스피크 기술은 일종의 유니버설 트랜스레이터

HP is still trying to finalize the details of an open source licensing
agreement for e-Speak that would allow all users to freely copy and
change it. Although the proposed agreement is modeled on the one that
helped make the Linux operating system so popular, the company is still
wrestling with how to let other companies and individuals modify and
improve the software while still keeping control of it.

``I don't think the ruling itself has had much impact on this show,''
said Ransom Love, CEO and president of Caldera Systems Inc., sitting in
the middle of Comdex' first Linux Pavilion, a day after giving the
inaugural keynote for the Comdex Linux Business Forum. ``It may have
added a little emphasis to what was already happening, but people are
already considering alternatives to Windows.''

The renegade Linux operating system will be in the spotlight again this
week when two related companies, the much-anticipated VA Linux Systems
Inc. and Andover.Net., go public.
Both companies are well-known in the quirky Linux community and among
software developers.
두 개의 리눅스 관련 기업들이 이번 주에 주식을 첫 상장한다. 이에 따라

But they are also expected to get a warm reception on Wall Street,
especially after hot IPOs by Red Hat Inc., the biggest Linux distributor,

for small to medium-sized businesses.

VA Linux Systems was founded in 1993 by its chief executive Larry
Augustin, while he was a Stanford University graduate student.

Augustin has joked that his biggest claim to fame was that he started a
Linux company, building Linux workstations in his living room, instead of
joining fellow students David Filo and Jerry Yang as they started up

The second Linux-related IPO of the week, Andover.Net, is a network of
Web sites with content, community and e-commerce, targeted to the Linux
and open source community. Andover.Net's most well-known site is
Slashdot.org, a must-read in the open source community, that bills itself
as ``News for Nerds.''

Dell Computer Corp., the No. 2 U.S. maker of personal computers, will
install and support Red Hat Linux operating systems on all its PowerEdge
server models, the companies said Monday.

전 모델에 레드햇사의 리눅스 운영체제를 설치, 지원하기로 했다.
The deal includes worldwide service and support to its Linux offerings.
The deal allows the companies to provide operating systems customized to
a business customer's needs, Dell and Red Hat said.

서비스와 지원을 위해 전 세계적으로 공동협력하고 고객들의 요구에 맞춰

It extends an agreement between the two companies and makes Round Rock,
Texas-based Dell, the world's No. 2 PC server provider, the first major
systems vendor to factory-install Red Hat Linux across its entire server
line, the companies said.

The agreement provides Dell customers with a combination of free and
discounted services and support and will help improve their ownership
experience, worldwide, the companies said.

Red Hat recently opened a series of customer support centers to provide
support for Europe, Middle East, Africa, Japan and the Asia Pacific
region.

아시아-태평양지역에서 서비스를 강화하고 있다.
These new resources will assist PowerEdge server customers by providing
Red Hat Linux support in native languages. The agreement offers Dell
customers 90 days of Web and phone support from Red Hat; discounted Red
Hat professional services, including installation assistance where
necessary; and 180 days of Red Hat subscription services.
이에따라 파워엣지 서버 사용자들은 레드햇 리눅스 이용 시 모국어를 사용하는
서비스요원으로부터 90일동안의 웹 및 전화를 통한 무상 서비스 지원을 받을수
있게 됐다. 할인 가격으로 시스템 설치 또는 필요시 180일의 레드햇 서비스
가입 등 레드햇의 전문적인 서비스도 받을 수 있게 됐다.
