A sovereignty dispute between South Korea and Japan over the
Tokdo islets in the East Sea is again threatening relations
between the two neighboring countries.
韓日간 독도 영유권 분쟁이 재연됨에 따라 양국 관계에 또다시 금이
가고 있다.
Japanese news reports said that the LDP has decided to include
Japan's sovereignty claims over the Tokdo islets, Diaoyu islets
and the ``northern territory'' bordering Russia in its party
platform.
일본 언론의 보도에 따르면 자민당은 독도, 센카쿠제도 그리고 러시
아 접경의 '북방영토'를 일본땅으로 규정하는 내용을 당 공약에 포함
시키기로 했다는 것이다.
Both the South Korean government and the nation's political
parties reacted immediately to the sensitive issue of Japan's
sovereignty claim over the Tokdo islets, which are now guarded by
a contingent of South Korean maritime police.

적으로 반응했다. 현재 독도는 한국 해경(海警) 파견수비대가 경계하

``We are seriously concerned about the fact that the LDP has yet
to free itself of the legacies of Japan's imperialism and is
trying to exploit the Tokdo sovereignty issue in order to earn
votes,'' spokesman Chung Dong-young said in a statement. Rep.
Chung said that the LDP's position does not fit that of a
Japanese governing party, which should be a responsible member of
the international community.
국민회의 정동영대변인은 성명을 통해 "자민당이 日제국주의의 잔재
를 청산하지 못한 채 표를 얻기 위해 독도 영유권 문제를 이용하려는
데 대해 심각한 우려를 표명한다"면서 "이는 국제 사회에 책임 있는
日집권당으로서의 자세가 아니다"고 말했다.
The anachronistic sovereignty claim may not only result in
serious territorial disputes, but also exercise a negative impact
upon the situation in Northeast Asia, he said.
정대변인은 또 "시대착오적인 독도영유권 주장은 심각한 영토분쟁을
초래할 뿐 아니라, 동북아 정세에도 나쁜 영향을 미치게 될 것"이라고
말했다.
The longstanding South Korea-Japan dispute over the Tokdo islets
had strained bilateral relations early this year, once
threatening to abort a planned summit between President Kim
Young-sam and Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.
독도영유권을 둘러싸고 오랫동안 있어왔던 한일간 분쟁은 올해초에도
양국관계를 경색시켜, 김영삼 대통령과 하시모토 日총리 사이에 예정
되었던 정상회담이 취소될 위기까지 몰고 간 바 있다.

stems from their competing claims to the rocky islets,
which are located roughly mid-way between the two countries.
