In general, we think perfume is only for women.
But today perfume has various kinds of uses.
Plastic that smells like leather is one example.
Also, scientists are finding that some smells make us feel better.
They help us to relax, to sleep, or to feel happier.
Scientists found that the smell of apples with spices can make our blood pressure go down.
In the future we may use perfume in a completely different way.

There is also no proof that chocolate is the cause of tooth decay.
In fact, it is believed that the cocoa butter in chocolate forms a coating over teeth that may help to protect them.

Linda was walking home from work one day last month, when she saw a man who was trying to break into a car.
She asked him what he was doing.
Then he said to her, "Get lost!"
She ran to a nearby shop and asked the owner to call the police, which he did immediately.
When she went outside again, she saw that both the thief and the car had gone.
About ten minutes later, a police car came.
Linda gave a description of the thief.
She said that he looked about twenty-five years old.
A few days later she found out that the thief had been caught and that the car had been returned to its owner, undamaged.
Linda was glad to be able to help.

Her first trial was coming up, and she worked diligently on her case.
Several other experienced lawyers occasionally dropped in to see how she was doing and to offer help.

Research indicates that girls entering junior high school feel less self-confident than they did in elementary school,
and they become less self-confident with each successive year of school.
In contrast, the same research shows that boys become more self-confident with each passing year.
Parents, teachers, and counselors can have a significant impact on how girls see themselves.
When offered the right kind of support,
they can potentially avoid suffering from the common problems rooted in girls' low self-esteem.

The human brain has two hemispheres.
Although the hemispheres cooperate for many functions, they control very different activities.
Thanks to the left side of our brain, we are able to master and control language, using it to communicate our thoughts.
It is the left side of our brain that helps us make sense.
It gives order and logic to our speech.
The right hemisphere is less important to language production and appear to be more related with the creation of images.
Research suggests that the right brain dominates during infancy.
Babies perceive the world by visualizing, which is controlled by the right side.

A recent survey by America's most popular teen magazine revealed that
only 4.1% of the teenage girls in America feel they could go to their father to talk about a serious problem.
Even more recently, USA Today published the eye-opening results of a study of teens under stress.
When asked where they turn for help in a crisis,
they said that the first choice was music, the second choice was peers, and the third was TV.
Though it may sound amazing, moms were down the list at number thirty-one, and dads were forty-eighth.

Writing is one of the greatest inventions in human history.
It helps us to store large amounts of knowledge and to hand them down to future generations in a clear and organized form.
Without it we would know very little about how our ancestors lived.
We would be completely shut off from the great people of the past.
In modern times some means of recording sounds and carrying speech a long way have been invented.
Take, for example, the tape recorder and the telephone.
As a result, it may now be regarded as much less important than before.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

All of the goals of space science share a common end.
It is to learn more about the earth.
Only by exploring other bodies in the skies can we answer some of the questions we have about the earth.
The things we have learned about other planets have helped us to know our own planet better.
It is important to understand the forces that control the earth.
With that understanding we may be able to manage those forces.
This control would help mankind.

John Brown, the hero of an American Negro folk song, was born in 1800 in Connecticut, USA.
His father was against slavery and an agent of the Underground Railroad, which secretly helped runaway slaves to reach Canada.
At that time, slavery was a usual thing in the southern states of America.
Slaves could be bought on the open market and sold again.
Husbands and wives, mothers and children were sold to different masters.
John was only nine years old when he saw a black slave beaten to death.
He couldn't understand why black people were treated unfairly.
He decided to do the same thing as his father.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

One day, Marsha went into the forest to pick some berries because she wanted to make a pie for her grandparents.
She soon got lost, so she stopped at a house to ask for help.
Unfortunately, a bear lived there.
He made Marsha stay to clean and cook.
Marsha wondered how she could escape.

A knowledge of the local language can help an international businessperson in some ways.
First, the person can communicate directly, without someone else to translate or explain.
Moreover, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language.

George Roth made a deeper study of calorie restriction.
He said that eating significantly less food keeps blood sugar levels lower and allows body cells' protective mechanisms to work better.
One of his studies showed that calorie restriction benefits cells by slowing a damaging process that harms the structures of living cells.
George Roth

What a computer is designed to do is, essentially, arithmetic.
Any problem, however complex, can somehow be broken down into a well-defined series of arithmetical operations that can be solved by a computer.
The computer is amazing not because of its capability to handle arithmetical operations,
but because of the fact that it can perform these operations in one billionth of a second without error.
The human brain, on the other hand, is incredibly poor at arithmetic.
Unlike computers, it needs and has always needed outside help to solve the simplest problems.
We began by counting on our fingers, and have moved on to better things only with the help of pen and paper, Arabic numerals, mechanical calculators and eventually computers.

In order to maintain strong bones, people must eat plenty of calcium-rich food.
Leafy green vegetables and low-fat dairy products are excellent sources of calcium.
They put stiffness into your skeletal system and keep your bones from turning rubbery and fragile.
Your body uses calcium for more than keeping your bones strong, however.
Calcium also helps cells to divide, it allows muscles to work,
and it plays an important role in moving protein and nutrients around inside the body.
If you do not absorb enough calcium from what you eat, to do these things, your body will take it from your bones.
Because your body does not produce calcium, you must continually replenish the supply.

Classes in literature are useful no matter what job you intend to have when you finish university.
Books are about life.
People who study literature learn the skills of reading carefully and understanding characters, situations, and relationships.
This kind of understanding can be useful to teachers and business people alike.
Literature classes also require a lot of writing, so they help students develop the skill of clear communication.
Of course, a professional writer needs to have this skill, but it is an equally important skill for an engineer.
Finally, reading literature helps develop an understanding of many different points of view.

Before Social Security existed, Americans worried that they would not be able to support themselves if they lost their jobs.
A worker who lost his job could turn to local groups that provided charity or relief, but many Americans were ashamed to ask for help.
Then in 1935 Congress passed the Social Security Act.
This law said that almost all workers had to pay a small part of their income to a special government fund.
Then if the worker lost his job, the government would pay him money out of the fund.
Now Americans knew that if they lost their jobs, they would still be able to survive.
And they were not ashamed to take Social Security because they knew that they had already worked to earn it.

In spite of the sensitive nature of the issue and various foreseeable problems,
it is still obvious that the nation needs to start debating on euthanasia.
The issue has seldom been discussed openly, but according to a recent opinion poll,
over 70 percent of the respondents approved of doctor-assisted suicide when it is considered necessary.
The Korean tradition of strong filial duties may be one factor that would make the debate more difficult.
The debate may also prove to be still more controversial when it involves those who are poor, elderly and incompetent.
Yet, it is also true that everyone has the right to a more peaceful and dignified death.
What is needed is an efficient system to prevent abuse.

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.

The following suggestions may be helpful in dealing with identical twins.
First, remember that twins are individuals.
On holidays and birthdays, they deserve separate gifts, cards and recognition.
Second, make a genuine effort to tell twins apart.
Even though they may look very much alike, there are some distinguishing features that you can identify if you are willing to try.
Last but not least, don't assume that twins like the same things, or that they want to be together all the time.
Spending time with each twin separately will help you get to know them as individuals and make telling them apart easier.

Imagine what it would be like to wake up and find yourself in a metal box.

These facts interest doctors.
They have some patients who are very sick.
No one can help these patients.

But some day there may be a new medicine for them.
These doctors want to save people for the future.

Tumlir warns that strong international cartels in steel, oil and some other
basic commodities are forming or are effectively in place. These are propping up
prices, fueling inflation, restricting trade and limiting growth. This does not
do Western capitalism's image much good, or help the credibility of Western
governments that sometimes quietly encourage the formation of such cartels.

A certain historian has said of history that "it devours the present." I do not quite
understand what he means, but in science it is surely the other way about: the present
devours the past. This does something to extenuate a scientist's misguided
indifference to the history of ideas.

The term "culture shock" has been coined to describe the effect that immersion in

Greatness of name in the father often doesn't help forth but overwhelms

A science teacher was appointed to school in a remote village.
On his first day he talked about modern science and how it helps human

When he finished his lecture, he asked if there were any questions.
"Sir," one student asked, "could you please tell us when they will start

The popular myth that it is more difficult for an adult than for a child
to learn languages has been disproved by experimental research carried
out by modern educationists.
Much of the effort put into early education is defeated by the limitations
of the child's experience and interests.
The adult's experience of life and his vocabulary are necessarily more
varied than those of the child, and thus an intelligent grown-up person
approaches the study of a new language with knowledge of social customs
and of history, and with a world picture of change and growth gained by
general reading or study.

The way you express yourself and the confident manner in which you convey who you are and what you've done will do it for you.

'날짜를 정한다'란 표현을 쓸 땐 set a date 혹은decide on a date라고 쓴다.
회화에선 I have heard표현을 줄여서 I hear라고 간결하게 표현한다. No, net

I wonder if you can show me the

Here comes my
bus. My bus is coming here. Why not~?은 Why don't

Mr.Kim is very interested in introducing his line of testing
equipment to the American market. He has been negotiating with Datalec
for some time; however, there has been little progress and he is now
looking for other options. I gave him your name

complementary resources. He was very interested and will probably
contact you himself or through Jim Nort, if he has not done so already.
I hope that you can be of some help to each other.

With regard to your request for assistance in finding employment here

two affiliated corporations here in Seoul. Both indicated they would be

For their own benefit, companies have various ways of offering lower
prices. One way of doing this is a trade discount. It is offered to the
shops or businesses that buy goods on a large scale and sell them. There
is also a quantity discount, which is offered to individuals who order
large quantities of a product. The company gives a price break to these
buyers because they help cut the costs of selling, storing, shipping, and
billing. Finally a cash discount is a lower price offered to people who
pay in cash.

For centuries there has been a tendency for us to think of health only in
terms of physical bodies. The medical community did not look seriously at
the possibility that our mind could play an important role in illness and
healing. Recently, however, there has been a lot of research that proves
our mind affects illness and healing. A medical center reported that a
larger portion of their patients were people who did not have an organic
disease but were seeking psychological help.

MSF was begun by a small group of French doctors including B. Kouchner
back in 1971. Over the years, many doctors from around the world joined
the organization. The group quickly became known for its work in helping
the hungry and ill. They firmly believe that all those who need a
doctor's help, no matter where they are, have a right to get medical
care. They sometimes risk their lives to provide such care. The
organization won the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize for its work on several
continents since its foundation.

As men and beasts get used to each other, kindness and understanding may
slowly develop on one side, trust on the other. Both sides would gain by
it. "After all," says a zoo director, "the zoological garden is the only
piece of 'wilderness' that most people will ever see ; while it does much
to protect the animals, it performs a valuable service for humanity
itself."

If you keep a daily journal, you will find yourself writing down thoughts
that you carry with you all day. These thoughts include not just
conscious one. They also include subconscious thoughts that you were not
even aware you were thinking until you sat down to write. Pretty soon,
you will have collected a lot revealing facts about yourself. These will
help you focus on your problems, and ultimately solve them.

Now we are about to enter a third wave known as "ubiquitous computing."
Computers in the 21st century will be distributed throughout our public and private spaces and embedded in everyday objects, from clothes to chairs, from coffee cups to cakes.
With their own computing capabilities, these "smart" things will relieve human beings of some of life's more mundane chores and help out with a host of trickier tasks.

Second, we, as members of the Korean society, should allow the other useful thoughts to take the part of our society.
Tradition is important.
But we should not let the tradition become the obstacle on the way to accept other thoughts which can benefit.
It doesn't mean to give up our tradition but to get rid of the tradition which cannot benefit in our life.

Mankind, ever since there have been civilized communities, have been confronted with problems of two different kinds.
On the one hand, there has been the problem of mastering natural forces; mankind have tried to acquire the knowledge and skill required to produce tools and weapons and to encourage nature in the production of useful animals and plants.
This problem, in the modern world, is dealt with by science and scientific technique, and experience has shown that in order to deal with it adequately it is necessary to train a large number of rather narrow specialists.
But there is a second problem, less precise, and by some mistakenly regarded as unimportant I mean the problem of how best to utilize our command over the forces of nature.
This includes such burning issues as democracy versus dictatorship, capitalism versus socialism, free speculation versus authoritarian dogma.
On such issues the laboratory can give no decisive guidance.
The kind of knowledge that gives most help in solving such problems a wide survey of human life as they appear in history.

Religion have helped greatly in the development of humanity.
