But another aim, even more important, is to train the individual mind as

and more essential life is lived by us as individuals and since, in the advancing
age of mass culture, it is vital for us to maintain personal independence.

Accordingly, the most sensitive areas of our educational
sector are now being opened, which is permitting foreign
establishments to make significant inroads into Korea. Thus,
local universities, the *citadels of the national *ethos and
soul, are being fully laid bare to the challenges of advanced
foreign universities. The opening of our entertainment
industry to Japanese pop culture has even greater,
historically sensitive *connotations than the opening of our
film market to U.S. movies, which is expected to take place
soon.

그러므로 국가의 가치와 정신의 요충지대인 국내 대학은 선진
외국대학의 도전에 완전히 무방비상태로 노출되고 있다. 곧 있을
일본 대중문화에 대한 우리의 연예산업 개방은 우리 영화시장의
미국에 대한 개방보다 훨씬 심각하고 역사적으로 민감한 의미를
지녀왔다.
Needless to say, each country's leadership plays a critical
role in the greater activation and *facilitation of mutual
collaboration and understanding. The change of leadership in
Seoul last February, for example, led to the initiation of
some important changes in our foreign policies toward Tokyo.
Soon after President Kim Dae-jung took office, the government
announced its intention to open our entertainment market to
Japanese pop culture. Likewise, the nomination of Foreign
Minister Keizo Obuchi as Japan's new prime minister is
certainly a development that will have an important *bearing
on our relations with Japan.
