disperse는 모임을 완전히 깨뜨려서 scatter보다는 더 광범위하게 분산시키는 것, 단단히 뭉친 것, 조직적으로 단합된 것을 사방으로 분산시키는 것으로 나중에 다시 집결할 수 있는 것에 쓰인다.

dissipate는 증발·붕괴·낭비 따위로 완전히 해체되거나 소멸되는 것을 암시한다. 다시 모을 수 없게 산산이 소멸시키는 것을 뜻한다.

dispell은 분산시키는 뜻은 앞선 세 말보다 약하지만, 흐리게 하는 것·혼동시키는 것·괴롭히는 것 따위를 흐트러뜨리듯이 물리치는 뜻을 강조한다. 또한 무형의 사물을 소산시키거나 없애버리는 것을 말한다.

take는 가장 일반적이고도 가장 색채가 없는 말로, 본래의 뜻대로 쓰이는 경우에는 손을 잡는 것을 가리킬 뿐이다.

비유적으로, 형체가 없는 것에 쓰여, 어려운 작업이란 뜻을 내포하는 ‘소유하다, 지배하다’를 의미한다.
take a city
이 두 극단적인 의미를 갖고 있는 take는 어떤 방법으로나 무엇을 잡는 것을 의미한다.

seize는 갑자기 세게 잡거나 쥐는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 이런 뜻을 강조하는 경우에는 take 대신에 쓰일 수 있다.

clutch는 흔히 무서움, 조바심에서 단단히 잡는 것, 잡고 싶은 것이나, 쥐고 싶은 것을 단단히 또는 발작적으로 grasp하는 것을 의미한다. 특히 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 grasp보다 잡는 데 성공하는 뜻이 덜 들어있고, 성공하는 뜻이 들어 있는 경우에만 꽉 쥐고 있는 뜻을 암시한다.
