In a pluralistic democracy, such as the United States, there is a little chance that a monolithic public opinion will develop on any controversial issue.

The pluralistic vision of the human aspiration to live a good life must
not be interpreted on the model of there being a common destination that
we may reach in different ways. The notion of a common destination is
itself deeply at odds with pluralism. If a metaphor is wanted, artistic
creation is perhaps less unsatisfactory than others. We make our lives
the way artists make works of art. We and artists start from some
context, some tradition, some educa- tional influences on us; we are
limited by what we bring to it by way of talents, imagination, and
skill, as well as by the available possibilities and by the demands and
expectations of other people in our context; and then we do what we can,
and we succeed, fail, or banally fall somewhere in between. But the
product, the life or the work of art, is going to be different in each
case, because the contributions made to it by the tradition, by our
individuality, and by the mixture we concoct of the two are also
different.
좋은 삶을 영위하기를 열망하는 인간의 다원적인 비전은 여러 방법으로
도달할 수 있는 공통의 목표가 있다는 식으로 해석해서는 안된다. 공통의
목표라는 개념 그 자체가 다원주의와 상충된다. 비유를 들자면 다른 무엇보다
예술적 창조를 비유로 드는 것이 좋을 것이다. 우리는 예술가들이 예술작품을
만들어 내듯이 우리의 삶을 영위한다. 우리들과 예술가들은 어떤 상황, 전통,
우리들에게 미치는 교육의 영향에서 출발한다. 우리는 실현가능성과 우리와
같은 상황에 있는 다른 삶들의 요구와 기대에 의해서 (삶의 목표가) 제한될
뿐만 아니라, 우리의 재능, 상상력, 기술 등을 이용한 적용능력에 의해서도
제한을 받는다. 그런 다음, 우리는 우리가 할 수 있는 것을 하고, 우리는
성공하거나 실패하거나 또는 평범하게 그 중간쯤에 위치할 것이다. 그러나 그
결과인 인생 혹은 예술 작품은 제각기 다를 것이다. 왜냐하면 결과에 기여한
전통과 개성, 그리고 그 두 가지를 혼합한 것 모두가 또한 다르기 때문이다.
