for nothing의 3가지 뜻.
ex) 1. I got a concert ticket for nothing.
2. You did all that hard work for nothing?
3. They don't call you a skinflint for nothing. skinflint

Because of the political changes that have been going on in Afghanistan
in recent years, there have been a lot of people returning from other
countries. The refugees that left the country during the war have been
returning. There are other people who have been displaced for other
reasons. We estimate there are something like 17,500 displaced or
returning people in Kabul living in pretty poor conditions and they
are extremely vulnerable.

Hand in the cap

Tom
'Tom, Dick and Harry' 라는 말도 있고, 숫고양이를 'Tomcat'

For no particular reason at all, somebody shot him.

And this is another reason why it is more important than ever to be able to communicate in English.

It is all very well for science fiction writers to speculate, but is here any conclusive reason to believe that intelligent life exists in other parts of the universe?

People store different kinds of information in different parts of their brains.
One area saves only pictures of things that we see.
Another area remembers how those things are arranged.
The area that stores smells and sounds is very close to the area that stores feelings.
That's why you feel happy when you smell homemade bread or sad when you hear a love song.

Two thirds of all missions to Mars have failed.
One reason there have been so many failures is that there have been so many attempts.
We have been trying to go to Mars for 40 years.
Another reason is that getting to Mars is hard.
To get there, spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers had to fly through
about 483 million kilometers of deep space and target a very precise spot to land.
The space environment isn't friendly.
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder.

Why was it that the city died? Researchers have found no signs of infections or invasions.
But they have found signs that suggest the people of this city themselves burned their temples and some of their other buildings.
Excavations revealed that piles of wood had been placed around these structures and set on fire.
Some archaeologists think that the ancient urban people must have burned their temples
and left their city in anger against their gods for permitting a long famine.

They can also die from gunshot wounds because although it is against the law, people try to shoot them.

Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

Some history researchers suggest Marco Polo never actually visited China.
Why do they say that?
First, they ask why he didn't write about the Great Wall.
It's hard to miss!
Then, they point out he also failed to mention Chinese tea-drinking ceremonies, a very important part of life there.
Moreover, no Chinese sources of the period mention Marco Polo, although they mention other foreigners.
Finally, some say he never traveled much farther than Turkey.
Travelers who tried to follow his route always became lost at this point.
Perhaps he copied details from guidebooks on China.

International businesses need to understand the customs of other countries,
or they will probably have difficulty selling their products.
For example, an American orange juice company in France will have a problem if it sells orange juice as a breakfast drink
because the French don’t drink juice with breakfast.

The postal system became an avenue for bio-terrorism.
Often fatal viruses sent in letters resulted in the deaths of innocent people.
Such attacks are just one reason why we should seriously consider permanently shutting down the Postal Service and moving to a purely electronic mail system.
But there are other good reasons for shutting down our old-fashioned system of physically transporting person-to-person letters.
Specifically, continuing to move paper mail around is wastefully inefficient.
Eliminating what has clearly become an old delivery system would put a stop to the millions of dollars the post office loses every year.
We would also conserve precious natural resources, such as trees and water, and eliminate the pollution caused by the manufacture of paper.

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

In the United States, numberless people are illiterate for a variety of reasons.
Some dropped out of school.
Others came to the country from another country.
Still others had ineffective teachers, or were not ready to learn reading when it was taught.
The problem, however, begins in the home, not at school.
The majority of children with illiterate parents become illiterate themselves.
Conversely, preschoolers whose parents read to them are better prepared to begin school and perform at higher rates than those not exposed to reading.

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

For these same reasons, the average American would be surprised if a seated passenger offered to hold her bag while she was standing.
According to our American standards, we'd have to politely refuse such an offer, believing that it would unfairly inconvenience the sitter,
that it was meant as a polite gesture, and not a genuine offer.
Another point to consider is that Americans who live in big cities have keen senses of suspicion about other people.

After we had eaten, my husband asked me if I would please get him a soft drink.
I obligingly got him a soft drink and thought nothing of it.
Much to my astonishment, I soon found myself defending my actions.
I received a severe tongue lashing from the other women for "waiting on my husband."
I was told that I should have instructed him to go and get the drink himself.

The minute I sat down with the unemployment counselor, she asked, "What did you do that caused you to lose your job?"
These so-called "counselors" should be informed that sometimes people are laid off for no reason other than that the economy is bad and business is slow.
Also, they should try to be considerate of our feelings.
Unemployed people are simply out of work, so please don't treat us like criminals.

Those who are at the mercy of impulse―who lack self-control―suffer a moral deficiency:
The ability to control impulse is the base of will and character.
By the same token, the root of altruism lies in empathy, the ability to read emotions in others; lacking a sense of another's need or despair, there is no caring.
And if there are any two moral stances that our times call for, they are precisely these, self-restraint and compassion.

Perhaps the most understandable reason people lie is so they don't hurt others' feelings.
Most guests at a dinner party wouldn't want to say that they didn't like a specially prepared meal, even if it was terrible.
But even though people lie for good reasons, lying can be harmful.
If we act on false information, we can be hurt.
If we lie and are discovered, it can destroy the trust necessary for strong relationships.
Besides, lying is hard on the brain because one lie leads to another, and we always have to remember our false story.

Software piracy is already the biggest barrier to U.S. software companies entering foreign markets.
One reason is that software is extremely easy and inexpensive to duplicate compared to the cost of developing and marketing the software.
The actual cost of duplicating a software program, which may have a retail value of $400 or more, can be as little as a dollar or two―the main component being the cost of the diskette.
The cost of counterfeiting software is substantially less than the cost of duplicating watches, books, or blue jeans.
Given that the difference between the true value of the original and the cost of the counterfeit is so great for software, international piracy has become big business.
Unfortunately, many foreign governments view software piracy as an industry in and of itself and look the other way.

Linnaeus's system of scientific classification is important for two reasons.
He was the first botanist to classify plants into groups by their parts.
He looked at the different parts of the plants and put plants with the same parts into the same group.
Second, he gave each plant two names: one name for genus and one name for species.
For example, the scientific name for the sunflower is Helianthus annuus.
Helianthus is the genus name, and annuus is the species.
The robin is a red bird.
Its scientific name is Turdus migratorius.
Turdus is the genus name, and migratorius is the species name.

In other words we humans seek to outwit and control each other not just because of some tangible goal in the outside world that we're trying to achieve, but because of a lift we get psychologically.

The unmarried young woman of the professional classes is able nowadays,
provided she is not below the average in intelligence and attractiveness,
to enjoy a thoroughly agreeable life so long as she can keep free from
the desire for children.
But if this desire overwhelms her, she is compelled to marry and almost
certainly to lose her job. She sinks to a much lower level of comfort
than that to which she has been accustomed, since her husband's income
is very likely no larger than that which she was previously earning
and has to provide for a family instead of only a single woman.
After having enjoyed independence, she finds it annoying to have to look
to another for every penny of necessary expenditure. For all these reasons
such women hesitate to embark upon maternity.

Most of the actions of other people which give us annoyance spring from
causes that have nothing to do with the motives we assign to them.
Othello smothers Desdemona through a misunderstanding about a handkerchief
that five minutes' quiet talk would have cleared up, with disastrous
results to the villain, Iago. It is an excellent rule to distrust our
reading of facts, still more our reading of other people's motives in
relation to them. It is wrong in nine cases out of ten.
I can hardly recall a case in which my first conclusion as to why
So-and-So did this or that has not, on fuller knowledge, turned out
to be absurdly wide of the mark. How can it be otherwise?

One may think that a new and strange flower would attract the eye more
readily than a known one, but it is not so: the old is discovered much
more easily than the new.
"Out of sight, out of mind," says the proverb; and conversely that which
is not yet in mind will long stay out of sight.
But when once a new flower, even a rare one, has been discovered, it is
curious how often it will soon be noticed afresh in another place:
this must be the experience of all who have made systematic search
for flowers, and it explains why the beginner will frequently see but
little where the expert will see much.

The working rat in each group did not work because it was the hungriest;
for when the experimenters took a working rat from its cage and fed it
up and put it back with its two idle companions, it still went on working.
It does rather look as though there is such a thing as an unselfish rat;
the quickest and brightest rats, the best workers, are prepared to keep
the others in splendid idleness not because they are driven to but
because for some mysterious reason they want to.

One reason why stories are so popular in all cultures is that they are
generally easy to follow. The events of a story are usually told in the
order in which they occur-usually, but not always. Sometimes an author
may vary his or her style by presenting the incidents out of their
natural order. Then we as readers must rely on other clues to understand
the true sequence of events.

But clean air is not the only reason. People can set up a tent in the
middle of the smell of wild flowers and trees. They can enjoy being alone
in the mountains, forgetting completely about the everyday cares of the
world. They are entirely free to talk among themselves, occasionally
entertained by the sweet sounds of trees and small animals. They don't
have to be bothered by noisy crowds that disturb their peace of mind.
These are other reasons why people like to go to the mountains.

It is a curiosity of modern life that we find ourselves being lectured on morality by cold-blooded killers.
Mr. Willie previously had been convicted of aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, and the murders of a Louisiana deputy and a man from Missouri.
Mr. Shaw committed another murder a week before the two for which he was executed, and admitted mutilating the body of the fourteen-year-old girl he killed.
I can't help wondering what prompted these murderers to speak out against killing as they entered the death house door.
Did their newfound reverence for life stem from the realization that they were about to lose their own?

Man's youth is a wonderful thing:
it is so full of anguish and of magic and he never comes to know it as it is, until it has gone form him forever.
It is the thing he cannot bear to lose;
it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret;
it is the thing whose loss he must lament forever;
it is the thing whose loss he really welcomes with a sad and secret joy,
the thing he would never willingly re-live again,
could it be restored to him by any magic.
Why is this?
The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth.

In its overview of 70 countries, the report also highlighted the international community's "refusal to put serious pressure on Russia to apply the rule of law to its troops" in its breakaway province of Chechnya.
This was 2000's "most glaring failure," Human Rights Watch said.
"Perhaps the greatest disappointment" of 2000, the report said, was the United States' refusal to back the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.
While Washington has supported such courts in other countries, it has argued that a global tribunal would leave U.S. troops and citizens vulnerable to politically motivated prosecutions.
The report called it "U.S. exceptionalism."

Often a novelist is strongly committed to a certain character or cause in the novel.

The student should try to show how he reveals his opinions.

Does he use rhetoric, emotional prose or calm reasoned argument?

Does he make it clear that he sympathizes with one character more than another?
If so, how does he do this - by the character's speech and actions or by direct comment by the author in his role of omniscient narrator?

In poor countries, the most common reason for homelessness is poverty.
But in rich countries like the U.S there are also other reasons why people become homeless.

What of the Southern leaders, all of whom were liable to charges of
treason? One of these leaders, Jefferson Davis, president of the
Southern Confederacy, was the subject of an insulting popular Northern
song, "Hang Jeff Davis from a Sour Apple Tree," and even children sang
it. Davis was temporarily chained in his prison cell during the early
days of his two-year imprisonment. But he and the other Southern leaders
were finally released, partly because it was unlikely that a jury from
Virginia, a Southern Confederate state, would convict them. All the
leaders were finally pardoned by President Johnson in 1868 in an effort
to help reconstruction efforts proceed with as little bitterness as
possible.

Another important role many alders play in the wild, particularly in
mountainous areas, is to check the rush of water during spring melt. In
Japan and elsewhere, the trees are planted to stabilize soil on steep
mountain slopes. Similarly, alders have been planted to stabilize and
rehabilitate waste material left over from old mines, flood deposits,
and landslide areas in both Europe and Asia.

The present poetry anthology is a collection of poems with one or more
aspects of human life as a common topic. I chose the topic of life for
this project because it was wide enough to find many poems related to
it, and especially because it could embrace almost any other subject in
which I might be interested.

E-mail (electronic mail) uses computers for communication. It has
several important advantages over phones and regular mail. The main
advantage of e-mail is that it takes very little time to send and
receive message. From your computer, you can contact someone far away
(or in the next office). Seconds later, they have your message. If they
are at their computer, you can get a response instantly, too. Another
reason people like to use e-mail is that for just a few cents you can
send a message to someone in another part of the world. You don't have
to worry about the time difference or slow mail delivery. Your message
is sent immediately, and your friends or colleagues can send a response
at their convenience. Lastly, e-mail allows you to send a single message
to many people at the same time.

For this reason, no single attribute necessarily outweighs all others in the
selection of members of an entering class.

When you examine a golf ball closely, you will notice many small *dents on its surface.
These tiny dents are known as dimples, and they are there for two very good reasons.
One is that it has been found that the dents on the ball's surface make the ball fly straight when the ball is hit correctly.
The other is that the dents cut down on wind resistance, allowing the golf ball to travel farther.

Another reason that people kill sharks is for food.
In the United States and Great Britain, shark meat is a popular food.
In China and Korea, people use shark fins to make soup.
Because so many people like to eat shark, fishing boats catch a lot of sharks to sell for food.

OK, sorry to break up this party, but I've got resumes to fax before work tomorrow...

Two reasons, which are really the same reason.
I was sick of working for other people,
and I knew I could do a better job than my bosses.
They kept trying to suppress me, shutting me out.
So I said, "Fuck it. I'll do it my way."
And then you just quit?
Not like you did.

So to sum it up, Jack leaves his wife, shacks up with you for a while,
gets bored, and then moves back home, leaving you out in the cold.
My personal life is not your concern.
- It is if it affects your work.
- It doesn't affect my work.
How long have you been with the agency, Nina? Six years, seven?
Seven years.
I remember when you first joined. You were goin' places. Everybody knew it.
It hasn't quite happened for you yet, has it?
- You ever wonder why?
- I've done all right.
But you could have done so much better. You had a great reputation once.
You know what your reputation is now?
Jack's flunky. His lapdog.
This is your chance to get back on track, Nina.
He's a loose cannon. Rules don't apply to Jack Bauer.
He does what he wants when he wants, and he doesn't care whose life it affects.
He shot me with a trank gun, for God's sakes.
- You withheld information.
- I was following orders.
Maybe he's following orders you don't know about.
He violated lockdown, and he left you holding the bag.
If he cared about you, he wouldn't have put you in that position.
Let me ask you, would you have done that to him?
Fact is, I'm just asking you to do your job and tell me where he is.
I don't know.

I think she was paying him off for something.
Did Julia say anything?
Like what?
The real reason you killed Woods?
This is where Grissom and I differ.
Forensics is about more than science.
Human behavior.
The inconsistencies of human behavior.
Yes, 'How' is crutially important,
but so is 'why.'
Okay.

Catherine, there's a reason I assigned you this case.
You're good with people, both the dead and the living.
Translation, we're opening a political can of worms.
The Mayor's involved and election's around the corner.
You could have clued me in a little earlier.
Can I keep him?
Sorry. It's evidence.
Don't forget to feed him.
I know wood.
Oh yeah.

Jessica took the car.
And you hid in plain sight, offering aid to the victims.
Normally when they pay to have someone killed,
they do it so they're not connected to the crime
Why was Jessica even there?
Timmy. The Shepherds, to the world they looked like the perfect couple.
You know what they say about looks.
They can be deceiving?
They can kill.

And that's the reason I have to hold you back.
Anybody who's great at anything, Nick,
does it for their own approval
not someone else's.
uh, voice sound familiar?
Kind of sounds like the daytime coroner.
Gary Telgenhoff?
Yep. A songwriter in his off-time. What do you think?
It sucks. / Hmm.

Fine, you don't want to help me,
I'm not going to force you.
It's not that I don't want to, it's just...
why does this mean so much to you?
'Cause Mary Alice was a wonderful person,
and now all anybody thinks about her
is that she went off the deep end and did this terrible, selfish thing.
And I think there's more to it than that.
She was my friend, Julie,

Chief.
치프
So, you asked Shepherd to come to Grace, huh?
He was an old student of mine.
He left a Manhattan private practice because you asked.
Yes.

No other reason?
Just a favor for an old professor?
- It'll be years before I retire. - Chief of surgery is mine.
Chief of surgery is mine.
It was yours. Now I'm not so sure.
I am the best surgeon at Grace with the lowest mortality rate.
- You can't just bring --
- Now ask me why I'm not so sure about you.
Ask me why.

Darling, I will do anything you want me to.
What is it with you guys and your need to dirty everything up?
I don't know.
Maybe it's just testosterone.
Maybe.
You might want to see a doctor about that, too.

You’re letting her think you’re emotionally available.
You’re letting her think she has a chance.
And there is nothing worse in the world than thinking you have a chance when you really don’t’.
Meredith is right. Tell her there’s someone else. Tell her why George.
At least give her the chance to have some feelings about it for God’s sake.
Why are you yelling at me? Because of the estrogen George. Because of all the estrogen.

Unless you're hesitating because of some...
some different reason.
Okay, you are not thinking this through.
Like you not wanting to admit to this relationship at all?
We are a couple.
Fine.
Burke.
I said,"fine."

What about the people? Why is America--
It's not the greatest country in the world, Professor.
That's my answer.
- You're saying-- - Yes.
- Let's talk about-- - Fine. Sharon, the NEA is a loser.
Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paycheck,
but he gets to hit you with it any time he wants.

Hey.
안녕
I've been sitting here for two and a half hours and I still don't know why.
It's like being in the cast of a Fellini film.
Was it all GOP bashing, or did we cover anything else?
We did almost three times as many international
