Emily went into the forest to gather firewood.
Then she helped Melissa make hamburger patties.
She didn't realize how hungry she was until she smelled them cooking.
Everything tasted better.

그녀는 Melissa가 햄버거 속 만드는 것을 도와주었다.
햄버거가 요리되어지는 냄새를 맡고서야 그녀는 얼마나 배가 고픈지 생각났다.
모든 것이 더 맛있었다.

그 와중에 아줌마 구두굽에 발등을 찍혔다. 순간 눈앞이 노랬다.
딱 하나 남아 있던 자리를 차지한 아줌마는 승리의 미소를
지었다. 선반위에 가방을 올려놓고 출발하길 기다렸다. 승객들이
모두 올라타고 출입문이 닫혔다. 지하철안은 눅눅한데다
땀냄새까지 나 갑갑했다. 에어컨은 고장났나보다. 열린
창문사이로 뜨거운 바람이 들어왔다. 2분쯤 지나 네오역에 도착했다.
On her way, she stepped real hard on my foot with her
high-heels. I saw stars. She took the only seat left in the
train, with a mean, victorious grin on her lips. I put my bag
on the overhead rack and waited for the train to start. When
all the passengers were aboard, the door slammed shut. It was
really stuffy since the air was so damp and filled with B.O.
The air-conditioner was definitely out of order. Hot air came
in through the windows that had been left open. About a 2
minutes ride got me to the Neo Station.
1. On her way: On one's way (to somewhere)는 어디로 가는
도중에라는 말이지요. On one's way만 쓰면 "어디에 가는
김에"라는 뜻도 됩니다.
Get me a coke on your way.
가는 길에 콜라좀 갖다주라.
2. Step on my foot with her high-heels: 발을 밟는 것이지요.
하이힐은 영어로도 high-heels라고 합니다.
3. Saw stars: 우리도 별이 보인다는 말을 쓰지요. 앞이 노랗다는
말과도 같습니다.
See red라는 말도 있습니다. 열받는 걸 말하지요. 미국인들은
열받으면 앞이 빨개지나 봐요.
I saw red when she told me so.
그 여자 말에 열받지 않을 수 없었다.
4. With a mean, victorious grin: Mean은 비열하거나 얌체같은,
또는 못됐다는 뜻입니다.
웃음에도 여러 종류가 있지요. "씨익 웃는" 미소를 grin이라고
합니다. 좋은 웃음이 아니지요. 킥킥 대는 건 giggle이라고
하고요. 쿡쿡, 재미있게 웃는 건 chuckle이라고 하지요.
5. Overhead rack: 지하철이나 고속버스 등의 짐을 올려놓는
선반을 말합니다. Shelf라고 하지 마세요. 전혀 다른 뜻입니다.
6. The door slammed shut: 쾅 닫혔다는 말이지요. 여기서 shut은
door의 상태를 나타내줍니다.
7. Stuffy: 공기가 탁하고 답답할 때 쓰는 말입니다.
8. Since the air was so damp: 여기서 since는 이유를
나타냅니다.
9. Filled with B.O.: 몸에서 나는 냄새는 흔히 줄여서 B.O.
(body odor)라고 합니다.
10. A 2 minutes ride got me to the Neo Station: 문법에서
말하는 전형적인 물주구문이지요. 다음처럼 쓸 수도 있지만,

햇빛보기가 간절해지는 길고긴 장마철에는 젖은 물건 말리기가 여간 어려
운 게 아니다. 눅눅한 날씨 탓으로 겨우내 소에게 먹일 건초를 만들 때도 그
럴 것이다. 'Make hay while the sun shines'라는 표현이 있다. 「해가 있
을 때 건초를 만들어라」라는 식의 이 표현은 「기회를 놓치지 마라」는 뜻
을 가진다.
Wife:Honey, please get up. Rise and shine.
Husband:Oh, today is Sunday. Please let me sleep a little longer.
Wife:The sun is already overhead. You promised to mow the lawn.
Husband:Let it grow. I'll start mowing the lawn in the afternoon.
Wife:A shower was forecast for this afternoon. You know they say,
"Make hay while the sun shines."
Husband:Honey, don't worry. We don't have any cows to be fed, do we?
아내:여보,일어나세요. 해가 떠서 환하잖아요.

했잖아요.
남편:잔디가 더 자라게 내버려두지 뭐. 오후에 깎기 시작할 거니까.
아내:오늘 오후에 소나기가 온다고 예보했어요. 사람들이 그러잖아요. 『
해가 있을 때 건초를 만들어라』라고.
남편:여보,걱정할 거 없소. 우리는 먹여야 할 소도 없잖소?
