Boycott (보이코트) : 19세기 아일랜드 농지분쟁 때 메이요군에서
귀족의 농장을 관리하던 찰스 커닝엄 보이코트란 마사람이 있었다.
1879년 에 영주들이 소작인에게 가혹한 조세를 부과하려고 했을 때
아일랜드의 급진파 지도자 찰스 파넬은 소작인들에게 탐욕스러운
영주들을 예날의 나병환자들처럼 고립시키자고 열심히 설득했다.
보이코트는 이 운동의 첫 희생자가 되었다. 일꾼들은 그를 위한 노동을
거부하고 우편배달부는 그에게 가는 편지를 배달하지 않았으며
상인들은 보이코트네 식구에게 일체 물건을 팔지 않았다. 이 때문에
보이코트 집안은 식료품을 기선으로 운반하지 않으면 안되었다. 1년후
보이코트는 결국 영국으로 도망했고 다시 아일랜드로 돌아오지 못한 채
1897년에 서포크에서 죽었다. 그러나 그의 이름은 1년간의 그 공방전
때문에 영어에서 확고한 자리를 잡고 오늘날까지 내려오고 있다.
