[比較] special, particular, specific
special은 다른 것과 구별되는 독특한 성격·성질·용도를 가진 것을 말한다. 보통이 아닌 것(uncommon)이기 때문에 유별난 배려와 취급을 받는 것, 또한 생각에 마땅히 그런 것을 본받아야 하는 것을 말한다.
The baby requires a special soap and a special powder./ He is a special friend of mine.
particular는 주의를 끌기 위해서 같은 종류의 많은 다른 것 중에서 골라내는 것 또는 어떤 사물의 개성·특이성을 강조한다.

또 논리학에서 particular는 universal(보편적인)의 반대어로, 「특수한」이란 뜻으로 같은 종류의 하나 또는 몇몇에 관한 명제·판단·개념 따위에 관해서 쓰인다.
Some men are highly intelligent.는 particular proposition(특칭 명제)이고 All men make mistakes.는 universal proposition(총칭 명제)이다.
specific은 철학·과학용어로는 generic(속에 특유한)의 반대어로, genus(속)와 구별되는「species(종)에 독특한」을 의미한다.
Both the common violet and the pansy are violas, but their specific differences are more obvious than their specific likeness.
보다 일반적인 용법에서는, 어느 특별한 예증, 경우를 분명히 들어서 보이는 뜻을 갖는다.

[比較] therefore, hence, consequently, then, accordingly, so
therefore, hence는 for this reason의 뜻으로 앞선 진술에서 이끌어내는 필연적인 추론을 도입하는데 주로 쓰인다. therefore는 보통 결론을 도입하고, hence는 흔히 therefore와 바뀌어 쓰이기는 하지만, 앞선 진술을 강조한다. therefore는 특히 추리의 정확함을 그 뜻 속에 품고 있어, 논리학, 법률, 수학 따위와 격식 차리는 딱딱한 문체에 쓰인다.
All men are rational beings, Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is a rational being./ He was the only candidate; therefore, he was elected.
consequently는 as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding(앞선 것의 결과로서)의 뜻이며, 흔히 추론을 도입하는 데에 쓰이기는 해도, 반드시 결론의 필연성을 의미하지는 않고, 오히려 결론에 대한 충분한 근거를 암시한다.
He said he would come; consequently I expect him.
또한 뒤따라오는 것이 앞선 것의 결과임을 가리킨다.
He said he would come; consequently I am waiting for him./ He is the popular candidate; consequently he will be elected.
이 말은 딱딱한 말이기는 하지만 therefore보다는 덜 딱딱하다.
then은 since the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이므로)의 뜻이며, 논리적인 인과관계를 나타내는 데에 쓰이는 경우, 조건문에서 결과를 표시하는 절에 주로 사용된다. 구어적인 말이다.
If A is true, then B is false.
accordingly는 in conformity with the preceding(앞선 것에 일치해서)의 뜻이며, 보통 논리적 결과 또는 인과관계를 나타내지만, 필연성보다는 결과의 자연스러움을 암시한다. consequently만큼 딱딱하지는 않은 말이다.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다. 어떤 인과관계를 가리키는 지 그 암시하는 바가 명확하지 않은 것이 보통이다.

나는 영어도 수학도 좋다. 세간에서는 어학을 잘하는 사람은
수학을 잘 못한다고 하며 그 역도 진리라고 말하지만, 나의
경험에서 말한다면, 반드시 그런 것만은 아니다. 오히려, 이
두가지의 능력은 관계가 깊은 것이 아닐까.
<작문 예>
A. I liked both English and mathematics. Though they say
(that) those who are good at foreign languages are poor at
mathematics, and that the reverse is also true, it is not
necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that)
these two faculties are closely connected with each other.
B. English and mathematics were my favorite subjects. It is
said that a man who has a talent for languages is not
talented at mathematics and that the reverse is also true [or
vice versa]. So far as I know from my experience, however,
this is not the case. It would be truer to say that the
ability in one and the ability in the other have a close
relationship to each other.

자세한 설명
「반대도 참이다」라든가 「역은 반드시 진리는 아니다」와 같은
표현은 속담과 마찬가지로 연구해 둘 필요가 있으며, 평소에 어느
정도 기억해 두면 좋다.
(1) 논리학 명제의 하나로 「역도 진리다」가 있다.

(2) 논리학 상으로는, 역은 반드시 진은 아니다라고도 한다.
Logically speaking, we can say that converse are not always
true.

◆ Learn과 Study 의 차이점입니다.
learn은 경험, 학습으로 지식을 얻다 는 뜻인 반면에, Study는 learn보다 노력을 요하며
전문적 또는 특수한 것을 배우다라는 뜻입니다. 예를 들면 learn English는 영어를 이해하고
사용할 수 있게 되는 것이고, study English는 영어의 문법을 공부하거나 단어를 암기하는 것을 말합니다.
