2) 말할 나위 없는: perfect; genuine

→ 「어디로 보든지」, 「사람이 너무 좋다」의 처리가 문제이다.
- 그는 어디로 보든지 군인이다.

- 그녀는 어디로 보든지 말할 나위 없는 숙녀이다.

- 네가 그린 이 호랑이는, 아무리 보아도 고양이다.

(2) 그 전도 유망한 학자가 연구 도중에 병이 들었다고 하는 것은 아무리 생각해도 불운한 일이다.
1) 그 전도유망한 학자: the promising scholar; the scholar of great promise
2) 연구하던 도중에: before he could complete his studies
3) 불운한 일: a misfortune; unfortunate
→「아무리 생각해도 ~다」는 「실로 ~다」, 「정말로 ~다」와 같은 식으로 처리해서 다음의 동종의 표현을 참고로 해서 영작하도록 한다.
- 우리와 동행할 수 없다는 것은 정말로 유감스러운 일입니다.
I am extremely sorry that you could not go with us.
- 네가 실패한 것은 아무리 생각해도 유감스럽다.
It is a thousand pities that you should have failed.
- 그 사람이 그런 경우를 만났다니, 정말로 안된 일이다.
Oh! What a pity it was that he had to go through such a bitter experience.
- 네가 그 기차를 놓치고 못 탄 것은 정말로 불운한 일이었다.

ANS 1) It was really a misfortune to the promising scholar that he fell ill before he could complete his studies.

(5) 아이들의 키가 부모보다 더 커지는 것은 보기에 즐겁다. 이것이 신체적인 면만이 아니고 정신적인 면에서도 그랬으면 좋겠다.
→ 키가 더 커지다: grow taller than~
→ 보기에 즐겁다: be pleasant to see; nice to see
→ 그랬으면 좋겠다: It would be better if~; I wish~<참고> 네가 내 곁에 있으면 좋겠다.
→ ~만이 아니고 …도: not only~ but (also) …; … as well as
(ANS) It is pleasant to see children growing taller than their parents. I wish their growth were not only physical but also mental.

9. 네가 여러 차례 충고를 해주지 않았더라면, 나는 속아넘어갔을 거야.
→ 「나는 속아넘어갔을 것이다」의「속이다」에는 take in이 있다.「말이 번드르르한 사람에게 속지 마시오.」 →Don't be taken in by a smooth talker. 따라서, I should (또는 might) have been taken in.
→ 「네가 여러 차례 충고를 해주지 않았더라면」은 과거 사실의 반대로 가정하므로「If~had+과거분사」의 문형이다. If you had not advised me again and again 이라고 할 수도 있지만,「여러 차례 되풀이된 충고」라고, 명사형을 이용하여, Your repeated advice라하고 If it had not been for your repeated advice~나 But for (또는 Without) your repeated advice~로 해 본다. 또 If 를 생략해서 Had it not been for your repeated advice~ 라고도 할 수 있다.
(ANS) If it had not been for your repeated advice, I should have been taken in.

3. 네가 하는 말은 부정할 수 없다.
→ 부정할 수 없다: 물론 cannot deny이지만, 오히려 agree라는 동사에 더 익숙할 것입니다. 따라서 '부정'에 얽매이지 말고, '찬성하다'쪽으로 생각을 바꿀 줄도 알아야 합니다. 이와 같이 '부정'의 상호교환을 잘 활용할 것.
(ANS 1) I must agree with you.
(ANS 2) I cannot deny what you say.

미국법은 소위 미란다원칙이라고 해서 형사사건의 피의자를 경찰에 수속할 때에는 피의자는 묵비권을 행사할 수 있고 변호사의 도움을 받을 권리가 있다는 것을 경찰이 피의자에게 알려준 다음에 구속을 하도록 하고 있다.

* be naughty to+동사원형 말을 듣지 않는다, 행실이 나쁘다,
장난이 지나치다
- It is naughty of you to do such a thing.
네가 그런 짓을 하다니 장난이 지나치다.

Can you come my way? 네가 이쪽으로 올래?
* 누구와 만나기로 할 때 우리는 '내가 그 쪽으로 갈까요,
아니면 이쪽으로 오시겠습니까?'라는 말을 흔히 하는데
영어에선 Shall I come your way or would you come my way?라고
한다. 그리고 우리는 보통 '간다'라는 말을 go, '온다'는 말을
come으로 해석하지만 come을 '간다'로 번역해야 한다.
예를 들면 엄마가 밥 먹으라고 아들을 부르니까 꼬마가
'지금가요!'라고 소리쳤다면 영어로는 I'm coming!이라고 한다.
Going my way?라고 하면 '나하고 같은 방향으로 가십니까?'라는
말인데 남에게 차를 좀 태워달라는 뜻으로 흔히 하는 말이다.
All things came my way 또는 Everything came my way라고 하면
'만사가 나에게 유리하게 진행되었다'는 말이다.

In spades! 최고로. 더욱 강조하여. 몇 배로 강하게
* 어떤 두 아이가 말다툼을 하고 있는데 한 아이가 I hate you라고
하니까 다른 아이는 I hate you, too, in spades!라고 말했다.
두 번째 아이가 한 말은 물론 '나도 네가 미워. 몇 배나 더
미워!'란 뜻이다. 그러니까 in spades란 말은 '더욱 강조하여'란
의미로써 앞서 한 말을 강조하는 뜻으로 사용하면 될 것이다.
spade는 노름할 때 쓰는 카드의 그림 가운데 나무 잎사귀 모양을
가리키는데, call a spade a spade란 표현도 있는데 이것은
'스페이드를 스페이드라고 부른다'는 직역이지만 의역으로는
'흑은 흑, 백은 백이라고 분명히 말한다' 즉 '사실대로 까놓고
말한다' 또는 '직언을 한다'는 뜻이 된다.

It's your turn : 이제 네 차례야, 네가 할 순서야. =you're up.
둘 이상의 사람이 순서를 기다리거나, 어떤 일 또는 게임을
하다가도 차례는 돌아오기 마련. 상대편의 순서가 되었음을
알려주고자 할 때 사용하는 표현. 만약 내 차례가 되었다면
" Hey, it's my turn. "

3. 그녀는 더 이상 네가 상관할 바가 아니다.
She is no longer your concern.

square는 사각형, 평방미터 말고도 뜻이 여러가지가 있지요. 예
를 들어서 'I will be square with you. (난 당신에게 솔직하게 말씀
드리겠습니다.)' 라는 말이 되고 square person 이라고 하면 '고리타
분한 사람'을 뜻하는 말입니다. 그런데 square 라고 하는 말은 편평한
이라는 뜻도 있지요. 예를 들어서 square own's debt 라고 하면 '빚을
편평하게 하다, 즉 빚을 청산하다, 빚을 갚다' 라는 뜻이 되지요. 그
래서 square meal 하는 표현은 1800년대 말부터 쓰이기 시작한 표현으
로서 '영양가를 골고루 섭취한 풍부한 식사'라는 뜻이 됩니다. 그래서
하루의 세 끼를 three meals 라고 이야기를 하지요. 그런데 영양가가
풍족한 세 끼를 가리킬 때에는 three squares라고 합니다. 왜 square
라는 말에 영양가가 풍부한 이라는 말이 되었느냐면 음식을 크게 네가
지의 부류로 나눌수가 있거든요. 먼저 milk group (우유 제품), meal
group (육류 제품), the vegetable and fruit group (야채, 과일제품)
그리고 bread and cereal group (빵과 곡류 제품) 으로 나뉩니다. 그
런데 이 square meal이라고 하는 것은 네 부류를 꼭지점으로 모든면이
평형을 유지하는 정사각형과 같은 식단이라는, 즉 영양소가 골고루 들
어있는 음식을 말합니다. 그래서 생겨난 말이 바로 square meal 입니
다. 충분한 식사, 영양가가 풍부한 식사라는 말입니다.

The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.
