The immediate cause of the tragic incidents is, of course, a natural
disaster. In Chorwon near the Demilitarized Zone, 20 soldiers lost their
lives as a huge mudslide covered their barracks while they were
sleeping. Similar accidents took place in two other military camp sites,
leaving at least eight Army and Air Force personnel dead or missing.
Human negligence was again evident in these tragic mishaps.
이 비극적인 사고의 직접 원인은 물론 자연 재난에서 비롯된 것이다.
비무장지대 인접한 철원 지방에서, 20명의 장병이 내무반에서 취침 중에 거
대한 흙더미가 그들의 내무반을 덮치는 바람에 목숨을 잃은 것이다. 유사한
사고가 다른 2개의 군부대에서 발생하여 적어도 8명의 육군 및 공군 장병들
이 사망하거나 실종되었다. 인간의 부주의가 다시금 이러한 비극적 재난을
초래한 것이다.

Drawing our special attention was the death of some 50 soldiers who
were mostly buried while asleep in their barracks in landslides
triggered by the torrential rain. The military also suffered huge
facility damage estimated at some 70 billion won. Besides, bridges and
roads were destroyed in 114 places and 15,386 ha of farmland was
inundated as embankments were washed away at over 120 locations.
우리가 특히 안타까워하는 것은 폭우로 말미암은 산사태로 대부분 내무반
에서 취침중 매몰되었던 50여명의 장병들의 죽음이다. 군 역시 약 700억원
으로 추정되는 막대한 시설의 피해를 입었다. 그 이외에 114곳의 교량과 도
로가 파손되었으며 120군데 이상의 제방이 유실되면서 15,386헥타르의 농경
지가 침수되었다.

The subjects of the examination were confirmed patient 139 and 9 soldiers who lived together in the quarter, as well as the No. 222 confirmed patient and one roommate working together at the Seogwipo WE Hotel.
