lay down the law: 명령조로 말하다, 꾸짖다
→ ‘법을 내려놓다’(직역).

* hands-down
직역하면 두손을 내려놓는 것으로 즉 "손쉽게, 노력없이" 를 의미한다.
경마에서 유래한 말로 어느 말이 월등히 이길 것이 확실하면 기수는
두손을 내려놓고 경기를 한다.
ex) Our school basketball team won the game hands-down.
우리학교 농구부는 손쉽게 경기에서 이겼다.
She's best singer hands-down.
그녀는 확실히 노래를 잘 부른다.

hands-down이 두손을 내려놓다란 뜻이라서 한 손을 내려놓다는 뜻이 아
님. 여기서 hand는 손이란 뜻이 아니라 "~을 건네주다" 란 말로 hand
down은 "대대로 물려주다"로 명사로는 물려진 것(헌 옷, 되물림한 옷-
hand me down

Frogs are not generally considered as good parents.

그는 다시 그 번호를 돌리고 나서 "여보세요."라는 요란한 소리가 나자
조용한 목소리로 말했다. "멜빈이란 사람인데 혹시 내게 온 전화 없었소?"

*slam 세게 밀거나 내려놓다 push, move, place, etc., hurriedly and with great force:
