cf) Don`t try to rip me off!

- Don`t tell me you didn`t know that you were not supposed to do that.

I've been there.
I had the same experience라고
해도 되겠지만, 미국인들은 간단히 I've been there.
We are not there yet.
부인이 Are we there yet?
No, we are not there yet.

There goes my once-in-a-lifetime chance!
* There goes∼
이럴 때 남편의 입에서는 There goes my weekend!

It's going to be some party.
It's some movie!
Some husband!

What's the catch(to it)?
Hey come on, what's the catch?

Don't go to pieces!
의미인데 go to pieces란 사람의 정상적인 몸을 one piece라고
Honey, I arrived here in one piece
앞에 all을 붙여
all in one piece라고 하면 뜻이 더욱 강조된다.

Tom, Dick, and Harry
You don't want to marry any Tom, Dick, or Harry, do you?

Tom
'Tom, Dick and Harry' 라는 말도 있고, 숫고양이를 'Tomcat'

My husband is alive!

Every year my son and I have held a memorial service believing that he was dead.

When I first heard that my husband was on the list of separated families, I wondered if it was some kind of terrible joke.

Before our two teens went out with friends for the evening, my husband and I would negotiate a reasonable curfew for their return.
Instead of waiting up for them past our own bedtime, we would set our alarm to ring at their curfew time.
If they were late and the alarm woke us up, we would know that they missed their curfew.
We always encouraged them to call us if they were going to be late.
We preferred waking up to their voice on the phone rather than being startled by the alarm going off and not knowing where they were.

Three months ago, one of our neighbors, Bill accidentally destroyed some property
belonging to another neighbor who was out of town at the time.
Bill did not inform the neighbor of the damage, but he did tell my husband.
This did not seem fair to me.
So, several weeks after the neighbor returned home,
I knocked on their door and told them what had happened, under condition that they would not tell my name.
However, our agreement was broken and when they contacted Bill, somehow my name was in the mix.
I was very disappointed with such immature behavior.

In the Middle East, Israeli politicians never have to wear a tie in parliament but in Egypt where it's even hotter in the summer,
a politician wouldn't think of being in parliament without a tie.
No wonder a tie rebellion gets attention.
It happened during an African fashion show in the Netherlands this week.
The Dutch Queen's husband, Prince Claus, who was the host for the event,
suddenly decided and said out loud that his tie was like a snake around his neck.
That night on Dutch television the anchorman and the sportscaster took off their ties in support.

When something doesn't meet our expectations, many of us operate on the assumption,
“When in doubt, it must be someone else's fault.”
You can see this assumption in action almost everywhere you look―the car isn't working properly,
so the mechanic must have repaired it incorrectly;
your expenses exceed your income, so your husband or wife must be spending too much money.
However, blaming others takes an enormous amount of mental energy.
It makes you feel powerless over your own life, because your happiness depends on the behavior of others, which you can't control.

In an Arabic country, women cannot appear in public unless they are covered from head to toe in loose black scarves and robes.
They interpret Islam, their religion, to mean that all women should be shielded from view.
Women are also not allowed to drive.
When they ride in a car, they must sit in the back seat.
They cannot travel without male consent, either.
A wife has to obtain a permission slip from her husband before she can check into a hotel or leave the country.
Women are not allowed to work or study alongside men.
Their Islamic religion also forbids them from entering cemeteries because their mourning might distract men.

My family and I lived in an apartment until last spring.
We weren't happy there because the building was crowded and noisy.
We decided to move.
Finally, my husband and I found a small house in a neighborhood that wasn't bad.
The problem was the house itself.
The wallpaper was horrible; there were scenes of hunting all over the bedroom walls!
The porch and roof needed repairs.
The garden consisted of weeds, and a few half-dead plants with insects all over them.
When our kids first saw their new home, they burst into tears.
I understood that.
I wanted to cry, too.

If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
“My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.

In the 1700's and 1800's, the men's role included earning an income to support a family and working in the farms,
while the female's role included the responsibility to have and to care for children, running a household and assisting a husband in farm labor.
Running a household and caring for children was considered a “full-time" job.
Children were taught their roles when they were very young.
Boys were shown how to farm and provide for their future families' as they attended school.
Girls learned how to do the household chores and received only the very basic education.
They were taught how to be wives and mothers.

My husband and I recently had dinner with three couples who are all slightly younger than we are.

After we had eaten, my husband asked me if I would please get him a soft drink.
I obligingly got him a soft drink and thought nothing of it.
Much to my astonishment, I soon found myself defending my actions.
I received a severe tongue lashing from the other women for "waiting on my husband."
I was told that I should have instructed him to go and get the drink himself.

Last year, my husband was told by a resident physician at a highly respected teaching hospital that he would be called if anything "out of the ordinary" showed up.
He heard nothing and assumed that everything was OK.
Last week, he had annual checkup, and his doctor asked, "Why didn't you call to find out about the changes in your cells?"
The answer was, of course, "I didn't know about it."

My husband is a born shopper.
He loves to look at things and to touch them.
He likes to compare prices between the same items in different stores.
He would never think of buying anything without looking around in several different stores.

On the other hand, I am not a shopper.
I regard shopping as boring and unpleasant.
If I like something and I can afford it, I buy it instantly.
I never look around for a good sale or a better deal.
Bargains don't interest me.
Needless to say, my husband and I never go shopping together.
The experience would be too painful for both of us.
When it comes to shopping, we go our separate ways.

My husband told her he would have sent her to college had she chosen to go, but we could not give her that much money.
I've felt bad about this for a long time because I'm afraid she feels we favored her older sister.

It is not enough merely to exist.
It's not enough to say, "I'm earning enough to support my family.
I do my work well.
I'm a good father, husband, churchgoer."
That's all very well.
But you must do something more.
Seek always to do some good, somewhere.
Every man has to seek in his own way to realize his true worth.

Engineers ARE a different breed.
They are precise, logical, and great at problem solving, but they know very little about human interaction.
My engineer husband makes a fine living, but when it comes to expressing emotions, on a scale of 10, he's about a 4.

Rules for Choosing Mr. Right
I'd like to share my own Six Rules for Choosing a Husband.
The divorce rate would be cut in half if women used this screening process before they tied the knot.

Don't get married because you are afraid to be alone.
No wife is more alone than the one whose husband pays no attention to her.

My husband has a habit of turning off his alarm clock in the morning and going back to sleep for "just a few more minutes."
Of course, this makes him late for work, and I'm afraid his boss' patience might wear out.

Most of all, Lord, give me the strength to get all my housework done even though I'm dead tired after a long, hard, stressful day on the job.
And, lord, when my husband yells at me because I am too tired to wash last night's supper dishes, for the sake of my precious child, please give me the selfrestraint not to walk out the door.
Oh, Lord, on behalf of all working mothers everywhere, I ask for four things: strength, courage, patience and a forgiving heart.
My marriage depends on it.

My husband loves the dogs dearly, but he failed to train them, which was grossly irresponsible.
They sleep on the beds and the couches and drink from the toilets.
I can live with that, but I cannot tolerate the way they relieve themselves in every room of the house.
I am scrubbing floors and carpets constantly, and the house still smells terrible.
It's embarrassing to have visitors.

My husband's schedule changed, and we had to adjust to getting ready for work at the same time.
To adapt, he would grab his toiletries from the bathroom and dash to the kitchen sink to brush his teeth.
One morning he took off down the hall with his supplies.
I was running late and hollered after him, "Come back! I need a squeeze."
After he gave me a long, ardent embrace, I hated to tell him all I had wanted was some toothpaste!
* squeeze n.

Eva felt very sorry for her next-door neighbor, Elaine.
The two women had been living next to each other for years and had become close friends.
Years ago, when Eva lost her husband, Elaine was there to console her and bolster her spirits.
Eva had never forgotten the emotional support of her friend, and she strongly believed that one good turn deserves another.
Now Elaine was quite ill, so Eva made a point of spending the days with her friend, tending to her needs and helping to nurse her back to health.
It was not just because she felt that Elaine's kindness should be repaid with another favor.
Eva was genuinely concerned about her friend and wanted to help her out.

Our dog hates baths, and even the mention of one sends him *scurrying off.
One day we heard him barking furiously at a bicyclist going by the house.
My husband ran out shouting, "Do you want a bath?"
"No, thank you!" replied the startled bicyclist, who quickly pedaled away.

My husband and I were flower children of the '60s, and we used LSD extensively.
We heard horror stories about LSD, but we didn't believe them.
All we knew was that we were having a wonderful time "expanding our minds" and seeing psychedelic marvels.
We are paying a big price for our foolishness.
Our three children all have congenital problems not attributed to family history.
The guilt and financial cost over the years have been astronomical.
We are ― Former LSD Lover.

Mrs. Smith had never been much of a Sports fan―unlike her husband and two children.
On weekends others would take in either a baseball or a football game, while she stayed home alone.
After a while the situation became a source of great annoyance to her.
One weekend, to the utter amazement of her husband and children, she announced that she wanted to attend the football game with them.
She thought, If you can't beat them, join them.
Mrs. Smith realized that since she could not talk her family out of attending the games, she might as well join them in one of their favorite pastimes.
By joining her family on the weekends she would alleviate her loneliness, and in time she might even come to like sports as much as her husband and children did.

Joey Adams says he heard of a woman who stood up in a divorce court
and said she didn't want alimony. "All I want," she started "is for my
husband to leave me as he found me." "And how was that ?" the judge asked.
"I was a widow."

Agatha Christie, the famous mystery writer, was asked how she liked being
married to an archaeologist.
"An archaeologist is the best husband any woman can have," she replied. "The
older she gets, the more interest he has in her."

Women did not have the right to vote until 1920, but woman suffrage did not,
as many men predicted, merely double the total number of votes cast
on each side of a question, with the women voting the same as their husbands.
Instead, women began to study the issues and candidates and make up
their own minds.

We've had a pretty lean time these last few months, with my husband out of work.

Mrs. Smith had her hands full, what with three children, an invalid husband and an
aged mother to look after.

She locked her husband out of her room.

She argued her husband into doing what she wanted.

But what about men? "Jazzercise is a blowout," one Atlanta woman says.
"Remember the first dances you went to, where all the girls ended up dancing with
other girls because the boys couldn't dance? So this gives me a chance to dance,
which my husband hasn't done since our wedding. But my husband still won't
dance. Come to think of it, I'm back to dancing with the girls. Haven't made much
progress in the past 25 years, have I?"

For the third time in four months my husband has gambled away his entire
two week's paycheck. I don't want to leave him. We have three swell kids. Tell
me what to do before I go crazy.

As a rule of thumb, Columnist Art Buchwald has suggested,
"For every home computer sold in America, there is a computer widow somewhere."
"Sports widow, computer widow, you name it that's me," says Actress Elaine
Grand, 25.
Three months ago, her husband brought home a $250 Commodore VIC 20.

Jerry, 42,a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his son David,

complex programs.

Many women, rather than join the computer revolution, have (hammered out)
peace pacts with their mates. In Palo Alto, Calif., a woman who spent five years
with an Atari programmer finally imposed a 15-minute limit on uninterrupted talk
about his work.

While recuperating from surgery, my neighbor became cantankerous and refused
to follow the doctor's orders to take a ten minute walk three a day. His wife
coaxed and cajoled, then nagged. Nothing moved him.
In desperation, she lit upon a solution. Three times a day she turned on every
light in the house. Her husband cringed at the waste, and it took him ten minutes
three times a day to walk around and turn the lights off.

A husband and wife sat in front of their fireplace.
She asked, "Can you see figures in the fire?"
"Yes, dear," replied her spouse.
"What kinds of figures?" the wife persisted.
"Forty dollars a cord for the wood," he sighed.

I was sharing a park bench with a middle-aged couple. The wife was engrossed
in one of several books she had with her, while the husband ogled passing
pretty women. "Dear," the wife suggested, offering one of her volumes, "why
don't you read a book and rest your eyes?"

My mother-in-law and I were discussing a promotion we hoped my husband,
Jerry, would get. "He's one of the best people they have," she said.
"He works hard, is dependable and doesn't get sick."
"That's right," I agreed. "During the two years we've been married,
he has been ill only twice."
"And Jerry was never sick before that!" my mother-in-law added.

Before the arrival of our son, my husband and I attended birthing classes at
the hospital. One day we toured the maternity ward. The instructor mentioned
that on the last evening of our stay we'd be given a complimentary dinner
for two, and she told us what the menu selections would be. As we continued
the tour, I whispered to my husband, "Honey, I'm getting so excited."
"Me too," he replied. "I'm going to order the lobster."

A couple whose passion had waned consulted a marriage counselor.
Several appointments later, after little success, the therapist suddenly
swept the woman into his arms and kissed her.
"You see," the counselor said to the husband, "this is the treatment
your wife needs―Monday, Thursday and Saturday, at least."
"Well," replied the husband, "I can bring her in here on Thursday and
Saturday, but Monday is my poker night."

The dance at the local social club was in full swing as a couple who had
just met chatted with each other. The conversation inevitably turned to
their former marriages.
"I lost my husband at sea," said the woman.
"I'm so sorry," replied the man. "How did happen? Was he swimming?"
"Oh, it wasn't like that," she answered. "I lost him to a redhead on a
cruise ship."

The unmarried young woman of the professional classes is able nowadays,
provided she is not below the average in intelligence and attractiveness,
to enjoy a thoroughly agreeable life so long as she can keep free from
the desire for children.
But if this desire overwhelms her, she is compelled to marry and almost
certainly to lose her job. She sinks to a much lower level of comfort
than that to which she has been accustomed, since her husband's income
