Photography is based on a photochemical process, the action
of light on grains of silver chloride or silver bromide.

STEREOTYPE 고정관념
+ stereo: 입체, 입체적인
+ stereophone: 입체 음향, 둘 이상의 speaker를 이용해서
음의 거리감과 방향까지 재생시킨 입체적 음향.
+ stereo cassette tape: stereophone 기법으로 녹음된 tape
+ stereo camera: 입체 사진. 촬영용 camera로 동일 대상을
약간 다른 각도로 찍어 입체감을 주는 사진기.
+ stereotype: 연판 제작
stereo: 굳은, 실체적인
stereotype은 회반죽을 이용해서 사람들의 본을 떠서 인쇄하는 것에서
"틀에 박힌, 고정된" 뜻을 갖게됨.
stereotyping 판에 박다란 뜻으로 편견을 갖는 것을 말함.
예를 들어, 흑인을 보고 무조건 가난하다, 게으르다고 생각하는 건
분명히 흑인에 대한 steretype이다. 모든 흑인을 하나의 틀에 못박는
셈이고, 또 왜곡된 틀 속에 짜맞추는 형식. 한 개인을 개인 자체로
인정하지 않고, 그가 속한 집단에 판을 박는 것.
The highlight of the adventure came when our van spotted a lion lazily snoring in his sleep.
As the lion woke up, it jumped from beneath the tree and pounded towards the fear-stricken gazelles.
The lion tackled his prey from behind, and the gazelle crashed into the ground right in front of our van.
When I had recovered from the shock, the lion calmly caught his prey in the mouth, and carried it to the nearest tree.
When he feasted on his menu, I could hear the sounds of bones crunching.
When I realized myself in the van, horror in my face disappeared slowly.
I felt like the National Geographic photographer as I took pictures of the lion deeply occupied in his feast.
van을 타고 가다가 코를 골면서 늘어지게 잠자고 있는 사자를 발견했을 때, 내 기분은 이번 여행에서 최고조에 달했다.
사자는 잠이 깬 후 나무 뒤에서 뛰어나와 공포에 질린 가젤을 향해 달려들었다.
사자가 뒤에서 공격하자 가젤은 우리가 탄 van 앞 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다.
나의 충격이 가라앉을 무렵 사자는 가젤을 입에 물고 근처 나무로 끌고 갔다.
사자가 가젤의 뼈를 씹는 소리가 내 귀에까지 들렸다.
내가 van안에 있다는 것을 깨달았을 때 두려움이 서서히 사라졌다.
나는 National Geographic 기자가 된 기분으로 먹이를 포식하고 있는 사자의 사진을 찍었다.
When I stopped at the liquor store to buy some champagne for a wedding gift, the clerk asked to see my ID.
결혼 선물로 삼페인을 좀 사려고 술가게에 들렀을 때 점원은 신분증을 보자고 했다.
"But I'm twenty-nine years old," I protested.
"하지만 난 29살 이예요,"라고 나는 주장했다.

Rummaging through my purse, I took out two rubber worms, a matchbox car, a set of baby keys, an odd sock, a smashed pack of bubble gum and a ball.
나의 손가방을 뒤적거리면서, 나는 고무로된 벌레 두 마리, 성냥각 자동차, 아이 열쇠 꾸러미, 짝없는 양말, 찌부러진 풍선껌 통, 그리고 공을 꺼내었다.
But I couldn't find my license.

"Forget it," the clerk said suddenly.

"Only a mother of three boys would have that collection in her purse!"

이 사진을 보니 나의 학창시절이 생각난다.

Midway through its first century as a nation, the United States's
population had increased roughly five times, and eleven new states had
been added to the original thirteen. During these years the demand for
portraits grew and grew eventually to be satisfied by the camera. In
1839 the daguerreotype was introduced to America, ushering in the age of
photography, and within a generation the new invention put an end to the
popularity of painted portraits. Once again an original portrait became
a luxury, commissioned by the wealthy and executed by the professional.
