I'm holding for Mr. Brown
Who are you holding for?
만약 Can I help you?
I'm holding for Mr. Brown이라고 대답하면 돤다.

We are shorthanded today. Thank you for

I beg your pardon?
No, the other way around. I beg your pardon!
물론 joke인데 Ford가 말이 잘 안 들려서 I beg your pardon이라고

☞ lady ☜
Some lady is here to see you.
켜서 this woman, that woman 하는 것은 결코 좋은 말투가 못된다.
역시 this lady, that lady 라고 해야겠다.
"Excuse me, ladies."

* face the music
Let's face the music and dance.(음악을 대하고 춤을 추자) 이란 노래

When he was nine years old, he was brought to the door by a policeman who kept one hand on his arm as if to stop him from running away.
He had been caught writing with a crayon on a wall of the subway station and his parents were expected to discipline him.

The first organized system for sending messages began in Egypt around 1500 B.C.
This system developed because the pharaohs frequently needed to send messages up and down the Nile River.
They wanted to keep their empire running smoothly.
Later, the Persians developed a more efficient system for sending messages using men and horses.
Message carriers rode along the road system stretching from one end of the Persian Empire to the other.
Along these roads, fresh men and horses waiting at special stations took the messages and passed them on to next carriers.

Before our two teens went out with friends for the evening, my husband and I would negotiate a reasonable curfew for their return.
Instead of waiting up for them past our own bedtime, we would set our alarm to ring at their curfew time.
If they were late and the alarm woke us up, we would know that they missed their curfew.
We always encouraged them to call us if they were going to be late.
We preferred waking up to their voice on the phone rather than being startled by the alarm going off and not knowing where they were.

On most subway trains, the doors open automatically at each station.
But when you are on the M1tro, the subway in Paris, things are different.
I watched a man on the Mtro try to get off the train and fail.
When the train came to his station, he got up and stood patiently in front of the door, waiting for it to open.
It never opened.
The train simply started up again and went on to the next station.
In the Mtro, you have to open the doors yourself by pushing a button, depressing a lever or sliding them.

There is a famous story about a faithful dog named Shep.
When his master died, Shep followed the coffin to the train station.
The next day, he began to wait for his master at the station and all he wanted was to see him again.
Day after day, he expected to see him step out of the train but to no avail.
Five years later, when his wait ended, people buried him at the station and built a statue in his memory.

Grown-ups are notorious for expecting quick answers.
Studies over the past three decades have shown that, after asking a question,
adults typically wait only one second or less for a response―no time for a child to think.
When adults increase their ‘wait time' to three seconds or more, children respond with more logical, complete and creative answers.
And rather than telling children what to think, give them time to think for themselves.
If a child gets the answer wrong, be patient.
You can help when it's needed by asking a few pointed questions.

All desert plants have tricks for dealing with great heat and long periods of dryness, or drought.
Many small desert plants appear on the landscape only when heavy rains fall.
These plants “wait out” periods of drought underground.
They exist for months or even years as seeds buried in the soil.
When rains come, these seeds spring to life.
The young plants quickly grow into adult plants and, in turn, throw out a new bunch of seeds before they die.
All this happens within a few weeks.

Between historical events and the historian there is a constant interplay.

The historian tries to impose on these events some kind of rational pattern: how they happened and even why they happened.

All you have to do is just here.

Instead of returning to Chambre 15, the room he has occupied during
his weekly visits to his parliamentary district for the past 35 years,
he had wandered into a small thicket of journalists in the hotel
dining room who were waiting for the early projections from sample
precincts.

But I think there now exists among the American people a vast storehouse of
goodwill and potential energy, a readiness to make sacrifices- provided the
people are shown why sacrifices are needed and why they will be meaningful. T he
tapping of this great human resource awaits only national leadership.

Weinberger initially expected to reveal in March what sort of
intercontinental manned bomber the U.S. would build to replace its aging fleet
of 316 B-52s, whose mission it is to retaliate against the U.S.S.R. if a nuclear
strike is ever mounted. But here the Secretary ran into a dilemma that bedevils
all such programs: whether to wait for the development of hot new technology, at
the price of forgoing a weapon that could be used quickly, or order arms that
could be put into production rapidly, at the cost of settling for something less
effective than a later one could be.

Possibly for the first time, a soccer match has been delayed by laughter.
Five thousand Athenian soccer fans, awaiting the start of an exhibition match
between a Greek team and a Chinese team last year, rose and stood in respectful
silence as what they took to be the Chinese national anthem reverberated from
the stadium's loudspeakers. The Chinese team on the field, observing all those
standing Greeks, also came to polite attention, assuming that the Greek anthem
was being played.
Then a lilting female voice rose above the unfamiliar music - to extol the
virtues of a local toothpaste.

It was six o'clock on a bitterly cold and drizzly morning, and a group of
hunters waited in misery in the duck blind. At length one hunter, his hands blue and ice
forming on his eyebrows, said aloud what all were thinking privately.
"Fellows," he said, his teeth chattering, "I don't believe I can stand much
more of this pleasure."

My friend's neighbor has to walk his dog, Cindy, no matter what the weather.
One evening there was a heavy downpour, but he dutifully grabbed his rain
gear, called Cindy and headed out. The hood of his slicker gave him tunnel
vision, but enabled him to face the storm. After grudgingly making a
four-block circuit for the dog's sake, he headed home, cold and wet―and
found Cindy patiently waiting for him in the garage.

It is evident that no professional writer can afford only to write when he
feels like it. If he waits till he is in the mood, till he has the
inspiration as he says, he waits indefinitely and ends by producing
little or nothing. The professional writer creates the mood.
He has his inspiration too, but he controls and subdues it to his bidding
by setting himself regular hours of work. But in time writing becomes
a habit, and like the old actor in retirement, who gets restless when
the hour arrives at which he has been accustomed to go down to the theater
and make up for the evening performance, the writer itches to get to his
pens and paper at the hours at which he has been used to write.

My aunt deals with customer complaints at a retail store. She and my

she gave him a big kiss.

When Dan, the son of a friend of mine, started his own business at the age
of 21, his parents helped by buying him some supplies. Included was a phone
with a ten-number memory-dialing feature.
One day as my friend was waiting for his son in the young man's new office,
he noticed that Dan had programmed the phone with the most important numbers.
At the top of the list was the label: Food. Curious, my friend picked up
the receiver and pressed the first button. His wife answered the phone
from home.

As a real-estate agent, I had spent six months showing homes to one
young couple. At last I found two that they liked, but they couldn't
decide which to buy. The wife and I returned to the second house, and
she began wandering about for another look while I waited upstairs.
Eventually she told me they would take the first home.
I asked how she had made her decision. "I was standing in the family
room," the woman explained, "and I asked God to give me a sign. Right
then and there, a plane came zooming over on its flight path to the
airport, and I knew that wasn't the house for us."

I look forward to old age without dismay. When Lawrence of Arabia was
killed I read in an article contributed by a friend that it was his
habit to ride his motor-bicycle at an excessive speed with the notion
that an accident would end his life while he was still in full
possession of his powers and so spare him the indignity of old age.
If this is true it was a great weakness in that strange and somewhat
theatrical character. It showed want of sense. For the complete life,
the perfect pattern, includes old age as well as youth and maturity.

A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone
by―Your dead George."
When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.
