미국은 보험의 나라라고 불릴 만금 많은 사람들이 다양한 보험에 들
고 있습니다. 우리는 보험에 가입한다고 하는 반면 미국에서는 보험
을 구입한다 (buy the insurance) 라고 합니다.
미국에서 흔한 보험은 우리와 같이 자동차 보험, 의료 보험 등이 있
고요. 미국 가정의 86%가 어떤 종류이건 간에 생명보험을 들고 있습
니다. 우리는 친척 중에 보험회사에 있는 사람에게 떠다 맡다 시피
해서 보험을 들고 있지만 미국인들은 거의가 자기 스스로가 보험에
들고 있습니다.
Honor Box는 미국에서 쓰이는 말로 길거리에 있는 신문자동판매기를
뜻하는 말입니다. 원래 honor는 명예, 영광, 신의.. 그런 뜻이죠.
예를 들면 give one's word of honor..하면 명예를 걸고 맹세하다
다시 얘기해서 promise, swear 맹세하다와 같은 말입니다. 그리고
be on one's honor는 명예를 걸고 맹세한 상태를 말하죠. 그리고 어떤
일에 있어서 사람들이 정직하게 규칙을 준수하고 요금을 지불할 것을
믿고 어떠한 간섭도 받지 않는 제도, 즉 honor system(명예제도)라고
하죠. 예를 들어서 미국에는 honor system에 따라서 운영되는 가게들이
있는데 이러한 가게의 손님들은 필요한 물건을 구입한 다음에 비치해둔
상자안에 적정 금액을 넣고 그냥 가면 됩니다. 또는 우리나라에서도
요즘 동사무소에 가면 서류에 필요한 인지값을 알아서 비치된 바구니에
넣고 거스름돈을 챙겨가게 되어 있는데 이것도 honor system에 따른
지불 방식이라고 볼 수 있죠. 그래서 여기서 honor box에서 honor..하는
것은 신문과 관계가 있는 것이 아니고 요금을 지불하는 방식을 두고 하는
이야기입니다. 물론 신문 자동 판매기는 알맞은 금액을 넣지 않으면
신문이 나오지 않지만 어쨌든 남의 간섭없이 필요한 물건을 구입하고
요금을 낸다는 점에서 honor system에 의해서 운영이 된다고 볼수 있죠.
