legal은 성문법이나 그 시행에 관계가 있는 것, 또는 그에 합치하는 것을 가리킨다.

lawful은 법률의 문장의 측면보다 그 실질적 원칙에 합치하는 것을 암시하고, 전반적으로 법률에 위반하지 않는 것을 모두 가리킨다. legal은 언제나 공식적인 법에 합치하는 것을 의미하나, lawful은 주로 도덕적·종교적 계율에 합치하는 것을 의미하는 데 사용한다.
ex) lawful heir/ a lawful but shady enterprise(합법적이기는 하나 미심쩍은 기업)/ That man was not Miss. Kim's lawful husband.
licit는 무역·상업·개인적 관계 등에 법률에 엄밀히 합치하는 것을 가리키지만, licit or illicit(합법적이거나 위법적이거나)라는 구로 사용되는 경우말고는 흔히 사용되지 않는다. 특히 어떤 일이 이행·실행되어야 할 방식·절차에 관한 법의 규정에 엄밀히 합치하는 것을 암시하고, 법으로서 규정된 것에 관해서 쓰인다. 이를테면, a licit marriage(합법적 결혼)는 교회법(canon law)에 따라서 거행하는 결혼식에 뒤따르는 모든 선행조건과 모든 필요조건을 갖춘 결혼이다.
legitimate는 근본적으로 법률상 결혼한 부모에게서 난 아이에게 적용되지만, 또한 왕위·상속·재산 같은 것에 대한 법적 권리를 가진 사람에 관해서도 사용된다.
ex) the legitimate monarch/ the legitimate heir of an estate
또한 법으로서 인정되는 것만이 아니고, 관습·전통·권위자로서 인정·용인되는 것 또는 논리적으로 허용되는 것을 가리킨다.

[比較] price, charge, cost, fee, fare, commission
price는 특히{상품을 구매할 경우 지불해야 되는 돈의 양} 즉 (가격)을 말하며, charge는 배달료(delivery charge)나 호텔료(hotel charge) 및 진찰료(consultation's charge) 등과 같이{서비스에 대해 지불하는 돈},즉 (대금)을 의미한다. 반면 cost는 뭔가 (제조하거나 구입하는데 소요 된 돈), 즉(원가)나(비용)을 말한다. 그밖에 요금을 말하는 단어로 rate는 "백분율로 산정된 비율이나 요금"을 fee는(변호사비 "contingency fee"나 (등록비 registration fee") 등 (법적이거나 공식적인 절차에 따르는 서비스에 대한 요금)을 말한다. 또한 fare는 (운송수단 요금)을, commission은 매출액에 대한 퍼센트(%)로 중개상(agent or middleman)에 나가는 돈을 의미한다.

price는 팔려고 내놓은 구체적인 물건에 주로 쓰인다. 파는 사람이 요구하는 금액을 말한다.
The price of meat is high now.
charge는 노력·봉사에 대해서 요구하는 금액을 말한다.
There is no charge for delivery./ There is a small charge for mailing package.
cost는 물건·봉사 또는 무엇이거나 획득하기 위해 소비한 것을 말하는데 이를테면, 노력 따위에 지불된 금액을 말한다. 어느 물건에 대해서 사는 이가 지불한 price는 그에게는 그 물건의 cost이다. 일상용법에서 cost가 price의 대신으로 쓰이는 수가 있다.
They found the cost of the piano made too severe drain on their resources.
엄밀한 용법에서는 생산·제조·건축 따위에서 실제로 지출된 것, 「원가」를 말한다.

expense는 「cost+잡비(incidental expenditure)」를 말한다. 무엇에 대한 지출의 총액을 말한다.
The expense of a journey was more than the contemplated cost.
charge를 제외한 이상의 말들은 다 비유적으로 쓰여, 정신력의 소모, 근심·고통 따위에 사람이 「지불하는 것」을 가리키는 수도 있다.
We gained the victory, but at a heavy price./ Victory will be won only at a great cost of life./ He became a brilliant scholar, but only at the expense of his health.
[比較] regardless, irregardless, irrespective
구어에서는 regardless 대신에 irregardless를 써서, I will leave irregardless of what he says라고 하는 수가 있지만, 무식한 비표준적인 용법이다. 이 말은 regardless와 그와 같은 뜻인 irrespective를 혼동한 데서 온 것이다.
regardless와 irrespective에는 언제나 of가 따른다.
The arrangements must be made regardless of (or irrespective of) his personal feelings in the matter.
regardless를 부사로 쓰는 경우는 영국·미국에 모두 있다. 속어 용법으로 간주한다.
I'll do it regardless(하여간 그것을 하겠다)는 regardless of what you think(네가 어떻게 생각하든 상관없이), regardless of that might happen(무슨 일이 일어나든 상관없다)의 뜻이다.
regret, sorry, deplore, lament
regret는 공식적인(formal) 말이다.
Mr. Lee regrets that he will be unable to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Kim for the sixteenth.
보통 쓰이는 sorry만큼 흔히 쓰인다. be sorry는 일반적인 말이고, I'm sorry I made you cry.의 경우처럼 특히 속요(俗謠)에서 감상적인 분위기를 감돌게 하는 말이다.
deplore는 regret deeply를 의미하며, 비난하는 뜻을 품고 있다.
He deplored the conduct of compatriots in European cities.
이른바 「분노에 의해서라기 보다는 비탄의 뜻으로」흔히 쓰이는 말로, 보통 짐짓 겸양과 위선의 의미가 함축된 말이다. lament는 무엇에 대해서 슬픔 또는 유감을 느끼거나 표시하는 것을 의미한다. deplore와 달리 슬픔이 외면적인 목소리로 드러나는 것이다.
He paused to lament the brave men who were not there to hear him speak.
흔히 그렇게 쓰는 것이지만, 단지 마음속 감정에 대해서 I lament that your conduct has made it necessary for me to speak to your father.처럼 사용하는 것은 멋을 부린 용법이다.

talent는 재능이라는 의미로 쓰입니다.
예를 들어 talent show는 장기 자랑이죠.

tie는 '묶다'가 기본 의미입니다
목에 묶는 것이 넥타이(necktie)죠. 나비 넥타이는 bow tie이라고 합니다.

따라서 a black-tie event는 아주 공식적인 행사를 말합니다.

받고난 후에는 시시하다고 실망을 하게 된다고 하는데....)

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.

A distinctively American architecture began with Frank Lloyd Wright, who

입니다. straw vote는 1842년에 미국 펜실베니아의 어느 신문사에서
한가지 주제를 가지고 시골 마을 주민들의 생각을 앙케이트 조사를 했
다고 하지요. 거기에서 유래가 된 표현인데 당시에는 바람부는 방향을
알고 싶을 때 작고 가벼운 지푸라기 (straw)를 공중에 집어 던져 보는
습관이 있었답니다. 왜냐하면 지푸라기는 아주 작고 가벼워서 아주 약
한 바람의 방향도 알아낼 수 있었기 때문이지요. 그 이후에 바람의 방
향을 알아낼 때 지푸라기를 이용하던 이 습관은 사람들이 어떻게 생각
하는지 알아내기 위해서, 또 대중의 반응을 시험하기 위해서 이런 비
유적인 뜻으로 쓰이기 시작했습니다. 그리고 지푸라기로 풍향을 알아
내는 것은 간단하면서 손쉬운 방법이기 때문에 절차와 형식에 따라야
하는 공식적인 조사가 아닌 비공식적인 여론 조사를 뜻하는 말로도 쓰
이고 있습니다. straw vote는 '비공식적인 여론 조사'를 뜻합니다.

그 당시의 여성은 외출해서 집에 돌아오면 머리에 핀을 뽑아서 머리카락을
늘어뜨리고 공식적인 장소에서의 긴장을 풀어서 편안한 기분이 되었지요.
그래서 let own's hair down 이란 말을 직역하면
'머리카락을 풀어 밑으로 내려오게 하다' 라는 말인데
지금까지의 긴장을 풀고 심리적으로 편안한 기분이 되어서 모든 것을
다 털어놓는 편안한 심정이 되다.. 그런 의미가 됩니다. 이 표현을 주
로 여자들에게 많이 썼던 표현인데 요즘은 남자들에게도 많이 씁니다.
The following is a list of activities that you will need to perform during the
initiation/dismissal phase of your case. Before you start your analysis, always check with
your team leader or supervisor to ensure that there are no other significant activities that
you will have to address.

determine whether problems identified at the draft stage have been corrected.

areas in the petition. Determine what issues need to be brought to the
attention of the OD.
8. Set up a meeting with the OD to discuss significant problem areas.
9. Prepare a memo outlining the significant problem areas for the OD's meeting.
Have the memo approved by your supervisor or PM, and submit it to the OD
the day before the scheduled meeting.
10. After the OD meeting, advise the petitioner of all deficiencies that need to be
corrected. Set a due date for submission of supplemental information that will
allow enough time for analysis and concurrence meetings with the OD and
DAS.
11. Begin to prepare the initiation package as described below.
12. Give the initiation package to your team members for comments and then to
your supervisor or PM once the team comments are incorporated.
13. Incorporate your supervisor's or PM's comments, and set up separate meetings
with the OD and DAS. Sometimes the OD will combine his/her meeting with
the DAS's meeting. Check with your supervisor to determine if this is
appropriate.
14. Place the initiation package in the formal review chain (see Chapter 12, I.E.
for review chain information).
15. If it is determined that the petition is not adequate and a dismissal is
warranted, see section VIII of this chapter.

11. 다음에서 기술될 조사개시 조치의 준비를 시작한다.
12. 조사개시 조치 내용을 팀원에게 배포하고 의견을 받은 다음, 이를
반영한 조치내용을 감독관 및 프로그램관리자에게 배포한다.
13. 감독관과 프로그램관리자의 의견을 반영하고, 국장 및 부차관보와
별도의 면담을 준비한다. 때때로 국장과의 면담과 부차관보와의

감독관과 협의한다.
14. 조사개시 관련 조치를 공식적인 검토모형에 배치한다.

한 가족이 함께 살아가다 보면 많은 의식들을 가지게 됩니다.

여러 의식들을 ceremony라고 합니다. 형식적인 면이 있긴
하지만 꼭 필요한 절차죠.
예를 들어 결혼식 a wedding ceremony(a marriage ceremony),
