The objective of some taxes on foreign imports is to protect an industry
that produces goods vital to a nation's defense. The domestic oil,
natural gas, or steel industry, for example, may require protection
because of its importance to national defense. Without protection, such
industries might be weakened by foreign competition. Then, in an
international crisis, the nation might find itself in short supply of
products essential to national security.
외국 수입품에 대해 과세를 하는 목적 중의 하나는 한 국가의 방위에
필수적인 상품을 생산하는 산업을 보호하려는 데 있다. 예를 들면 석유,
천연가스, 혹은 강철산업은 국가방위에 중요하기 때문에 보호가 요구된다.
그런 산업은 보호해주지 않으면 해외경쟁 때문에 약화될 수도 있다. 그렇게

상태에 있게 될지도 모른다.
