Africa is the second largest continent in the world.
Yet much of Africa has not been developed by man into farms and cities.
One of the reasons is that a dangerous and unpleasant insect is found there.
This insect makes its home in the heart of Africa.

It used to be fashionable for women to have small waists.
They often wore tight clothes around their middles to make them thinner.
A woman with a very thin waist was said to be "wasp-waisted" because her body looked like the body of a wasp.
The wasp is an insect with a very thin middle.

Ecopsychology is a new area of psychology.
Ecopsychologists study humans and their relationships to the environment.
They feel that the environment is very important to our sense of well-being.
In fact, they believe it is central to our happiness.
If we are going to be happy, we need to connect more with nature.
Children are born with this feeling of connection to nature.
They often spend long periods of time with plants, trees, and insects.

Like all insects, it wears, its skeleton on the outdide-a marvelous
chemical compound called chitin which sheathes the whole of its body.
This flexible armor is tremendously tough, light and shatterproof,
and resistant to alkali and acid compounds which would eat the
clothing, flesh and bones of man.

To it are attached muscles so arranged around catapult-like hind legs
as to enable the hopper to hop, if so diminutive a term can describe
so prodigious a leap as ten or twelve feet-about 150 times the length
of the one inch or so long insect.
The equivalent feat for a man would be a casual jump, from a

APA experts estimate that with this level of warming infection-carrying insects,
such as yellow fever mosquitoes, will have an increased habitat in the
southern hemisphere and droughts may result from the shortened snow season
in the northern hemisphere.

Once the rats had disappeared, the mongooses had to look elsewhere for food.
They began to eat other native animals: birds, snakes, lizards and anything else they could find.

The biggest problem for most animals in the winter is finding enough food.
If an animal's main source of food is very scarce in the winter, like insects or green plants, it may solve this problem by hibernating.

This deep sleep allows them to conserve energy, and survive the winter with little or no food.

The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different
feeding behaviors of similar birds with different roosting habits. The
common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting
ground, whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a
large area. The common kestrel roosts and hunts alone, but the lesser
kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from
others where to find insect swarms.

Passive plant defense comprises physical and chemical barriers that
prevent entry of pathogens, such as bacteria, or render tissues
unpalatable or toxic to the invader. The external surfaces of plants, in
addition to being covered by an epidermis and a waxy cuticle, often
carry spiky hairs known as trichomes, which either prevent feeding by
insects or may even puncture and kill insect larvae. Other trichomes are
sticky and glandular and effectively trap and immobilize insects.

If the physical barriers of the plant are breached, then preformed
chemicals may inhibit or kill the intruder, and plant tissues contain a
diverse array of toxic or potentially toxic substances, such as resins,
tannins, glycosides, and alkaloids, many of which are highly effective
deterrents to insects that feed on plants.

The fact that half of the known species are thought to inhabit the
world's rain forests does not seem surprising, considering the huge
numbers of insects that comprise the bulk of the species. One scientist
found many different species of ants in just one tree from a rain
forest.

While every species is different from every other species, their genetic
makeup constrains them to be insects and to share similar
characteristics with 750,000 species of insects. If basic, broad
categories such as phyla and classes are given more emphasis than
differentiating between species, then the greatest diversity of life is
unquestionably the sea. Nearly every major type of plant and animal has
some representation there.

Anteaters are solitary animals, and when two are seen together it is most
likely that they are mother and child. Anteaters feed almost exclusively on
termites, ants, and soft-bodied grubs. These types of insects build very tough
nests, and the anteater must use its sharp front claws to tear holes in them.
Once this is done it pushes its muzzle in and probes the cavities of the nest
with its eight-to-ten-inch tongue. When the food is located, the anteater
entraps it with its sticky saliva, making sure the nest is wiped clean.

There is an interesting story that tells how moths adapted to their surroundings.
In 1700s light-colored trees grew in England, and on these trees rested bright-colored moths.
Since the moths were the same color as the trees, birds could not see the insects and eat them.
Then black soot from many factories made the trees in the cities a darker color.
Birds could then see the bright-colored moths and eat them.
After many years, the moths were born a dark color in order to survive in this environment.
They could hide on the dirty trees, lay their eggs, hatch their young, and survive in the modern world.

The basic social structure in secretary birds is a lifelong pair.
However, members of a pair are usually not together, but instead stay a small distance apart.
They mostly eat insects, lizards, snakes, and rats.

Cordyceps militaris)

(an insect that lives in the soil. It attakcs the roots of the grape vine and
by feeding on the root, seriously impairs the vines' ability to absorb nutrients
and water from the soil)
