As well as talking with our voices we can also talk with our bodies.
This may seem surprising at first.
But if you watch two people having a conversation you will see that it is true.
People often move their hands to emphasize what they are saying and to show the person listening to them that they are saying something important.
Listeners use gestures, too.
They may nod their heads to show that they have understood or shake them to indicate disagreement.

When Amelia, one of my dearest friends, was ninety-nine, I, not knowing if she would live to be one hundred,
decided to ask the “big” question that is usually reserved for people who reach the age of one hundred.
I asked, “To what do you attribute your longevity?”
The usual answers we hear to that question are, “I didn't drink,” “I minded my own business,” and the like.
I had no idea what this healthy little ninety-nine-year-old would say.
What she said was profound.
It caused me to sit up and take notice: I have learned how not to be afraid.
Wow! What a statement! I realized―yes, this woman is fearless!
She didn't hide away at home and kept on moving out into the world despite the risks.

Being able to put aside one's self-centered focus and impulses has social benefits:
it opens the way to empathy, to real listening, to taking another person's perspective.
Empathy, as we have seen, leads to caring, altruism, and compassion.
Seeing things from another's perspective breaks down biased stereotypes, and so breeds tolerance and acceptance of differences.
These capacities are ever more called on in our increasingly pluralistic society, allowing people to live together in mutual respect and creating the possibility of productive public discourse.
These are basic arts of democracy.

We'll have to put off his presentation until tomorrow evening.
This means we'll need someone for the 9 a.m. slot, and we'll have to
cross our fingers and hope Eric can get here before the end of the conference.
Can you think of anyone who could do his spot?
Let me know.
By the way, I'm looking forward to hearing you speak on Simultaneous
Interpretation - I should have all the logistics ironed out in time to attend.

leg of trip 여행의 한 구간

I sat listening all the time.

In order to consider all the perspectives of an issue, we must be open to the viewpoints of other people, and be willing to listen and exchange ideas with them.
This process is called a discussion, or dialogue.
That is the only way you can be sure your own position is supported and strong.
Listening to other' points of view should always make us re-examine our own; we may not change our minds, but we will have a more valuable opinion because it has been examined.

But don't despair.
For many, this change is slight, perhaps unnoticeable.
Others adapt to fading hearing by becoming, even unconsciously, better listeners, watching the speaker's face or sitting closer to a sound source.
But the most effective way is to protect any hearing that remains in the ear and in the brain.
Here's how.

An official from the Financial Services Commission said, "when Yoon was the chairman of the Financial Administration Innovation Committee in the past, he listened very seriously to any opinion brought up, but the final decision was made only according to his own belief."

However, the use of this Botox for wrinkle treatment also came about from listening to the patient.
