In the United States in the early 1800's, individual state governments

Another early Native American tribe in what is now the southwestern part
of the United States was the Anasazi. By A.D. 800 the Anasazi Indians
were constructing multistory pueblos - massive, stone apartment
compounds. Each one was virtually a stone town, which is why the Spanish

The Anasazi lived in houses constructed of adobe and wood. Anasazi
houses were originally built in pits and were entered from the roof. But
around the year 700 A.D., the Anasazi began to build their homes above

rooms in these pueblos ― known as kivas or chapels ― were set aside

Each village had two chiefs. The village chief dealt with land disputes
