We are almost the same height.

It seems as if (or as though) it had been just a few days ago that~. It seems only a few days ago that~ 현재의 사실에 대해서「마치 ~인 것처럼」이라고 할 때는 as if (or as though) 뒤에 오는 동사는 가정법과거가 쓰이지만, 여기서처럼 과거의 일을 말할 때는 가정법과거완료형으로 한다.
He talks as if he knew everything.
My aunt loves me as if I were her own son.
He looked as if nothing had happened.
He looks as if he were ill./ He looked as if he were ill.
→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.
(ANS) It seems as if it had been just a few days ago that we were enjoying swimming under a scorching sun, but it is already a little chilly in the morning and evening.

Yesterday evening my son came in to ask if I felt like playing ball with him.
I was trying to get important work done, and I almost said no.
Then it occurred to me that my boy would never be a seven-year-old again.
So we went out onto the front lawn.
With the sun setting, we enjoyed being together.
There was a sense of beauty about the whole experience.

Recently, a severe disease hit Asian nations hard, causing several hundred deaths.
Many people who live in this part of the world are likely to be worried again with the beginning of the cold weather.
In spite of its close location to these countries, however, Korea has remained free of the deadly disease.
Many people think the secret is kimchi, a traditional Korean dish served with almost every meal.

Now, however, Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee claim that the conventional wisdom is wrong.
In their book, they say the search for alien life is likely to fail.
Drawing on astronomy, geology, and paleontology, they argue that humans might indeed be alone in the cosmos.
They say that science is showing the Earth’s composition and stability to be extraordinarily rare.
Almost everywhere else, the radiation levels are so high and the right chemical elements are so scarce that life cannot evolve into advanced communities.

You've passed the interview and landed the job.
Now it is your first week on the job.
Is this job right for you? Is the job what you expected?
Maybe you thought you loved working alone,
but now you're stuck in a tiny office with minimal human contact,
realizing that you hate working in a secluded setting.
A job is like a marriage or having a spouse.
Sometimes you don't know it's right for you until you live with it.
So as the saying goes, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

A catalog seller of kitchen equipment offered an automatic bread maker for $279.
Some time later, the catalog began to offer a larger capacity, deluxe version for $429.
They didn't sell too many of these expensive bread makers, but sales of the less expensive one almost doubled!
With the expensive bread maker serving as an anchor, the $279 machine had become a bargain.
Department stores seem to have some of their merchandise on sale most of the time, to give the impression that customers are getting a bargain.
The original tag price becomes an anchor against which the sale price is compared.

On June 16, I spent $600 in your store on a refrigerator, and a washing machine.
They were to be delivered to my home in Poughquag, N. Y.
Your salesman, Sam Casey, told me that shipping charges would come to about $17.
He suggested that the order be sent express collect by truck.
I agreed and paid immediately for the merchandise.
A couple of days later, he called to ask if it would be all right to ship by Railway Express.
He assured me that the charges would be about the same.
Again, I agreed.
You can imagine my feelings when the Railway Express agent called from Brewster, about twenty miles from Poughquag, to tell me that the items had arrived, and that shipping charges would be $22.
Further, that if I wished them delivered to my house, I should have to get a trucker and pay his charges, also.

There are millions of people looking for jobs these days. But one job
consistently goes wanting-night watchman at the Hollywood Wax Museum.
Almost two dozen men held the job last year, and they all quit in fright.
It seems they started "seeing things" at night.
* see things: 헛것이 보이다

But there seems little doubt that science has been a major producer of anxiety.

There is always a quiet time in forests all over the world.
While only some people take a short sleep after the midday meal, there is
a tendency on the part of almost every wild creature to stop what it is
doing and rest in the afternoon.
Usually between the hours of one and three o'clock almost no wildlife is
moving.
If you are hunting for game then, you may as well put your gun down
and take a nap.
If you are freshwater fishing, the same thing generally holds true.
Maybe this instinct to rest is nature's way of preventing heart failure
among creatures.

My memory is going, but I don't miss it that much. The nice thing is that
I remember mostly good things, and I tend to forget bad ones. For
example, I remember my childhood quite well, because it was really very
happy. I can't remember how old I am, but I seem to remember my birthdays
without any problem. This is strange, because I sometimes forget those of
other people -- especially if I have to dress up or give expensive
presents. I often forget to get up and go to work in the morning.
Fortunately, I seem to remember that I'm retired.

The Second World War mobilized the Germans in more than one sense. Not
only did the majority of the male population swarm out as far as the
North Cape and the Caucasus, not to mention nearly the whole Jewish
population who were forced into emigration and death, but Germany also
abducted as many as ten million laborers, a third of them women, from
all over Europe, so that thirty per cent of all jobs, and in the
armaments industry more than half, were done by foreigners. After the
war, there were millions of displaced persons; only very few remained in
Germany. Compared to these catastrophic movements all contemporary
turbulences appear harmless.

A:It's almost 6. We're much too late for the wedding.
B:Such terrible gridlock. The traffic is all blocked.
A:Where do you think we are?
B:I have no idea. I think we're lost.
A:Do you have an atlas?
B:Yes, in the back pocket of my seat.
A:The cathedral must be near here, but I can't locate it.
B:Why don't you use the grid?
A:The cathedral does not appear on the map.
B:Well, then, let's wait until the church bell rings.
A:지도책 있니?

'Let's c
all it a day'라는 표현이 있다.
Farmer:Thank you for your help.
Son:What time do you have, father?
Farmer:I forgot to bring my watch, but it seems like it's about 5 o'
clock.
Son:It seems to me it's well past 7 o'clock. Let's call it a day.
Farmer:What are you talking about? There's still a lot of work to do
today.
Son:It has become almost dark.
Farmer:It's because of the dark clouds.
Son:Yes, dark clouds! Oh, it looks like it will rain cats and dogs p
retty soon.
Farmer:OK, OK. Let's stop today's work.
<어구풀이>much work to do=해야 할 많은 일.
rain cats and dogs=억수같이 비가 오다.

Tropical storm Debby is a threat to the Leeward Islands including
the U.S. Virgin Islands. Right now the storm is close to hurricane
strength moving fast toward the islands in the northeast Caribbean.
Susan Ryan owns the Waves at Kings bay on St. Croy.
--Since this storm is so close to us and moving at quite a speed,
we have put our storm shutters up, we have secured the property
in the way of putting everything possibly away, we have our food,
plenty of water.
Forecasters say the storm is expected to hit the Leeward Islands
tonight then speed on toward the Virgin Islands in Puerto Rico
sometime tomorrow.
