ceremony =rite : 식, 예식, 형식(formality)
한 가족이 함께 살아가다 보면 많은 의식들을 가지게 됩니다.
그 의식들 중에서도 엄숙하고도, 공식적으로 진행될 수 있는
여러 의식들을 ceremony라고 합니다. 형식적인 면이 있긴
하지만 꼭 필요한 절차죠.
예를 들어 결혼식 a wedding ceremony(a marriage ceremony),
졸업식 a graduation ceremony, 개회식 an opening ceremony
등이 있을 수 있습니다.
이런 공식적인 의식이나 예식에서 사회를 맡은 사람을
master of ceremony(사회자) 라고 하죠. 우리가 흔히 TV프로그램의
사회자를 MC라고 부르죠? 사회자라는 의미로 master of ceremony의
약자인 것입니다.
또한 '형식' 이라는 의미로도 쓰이는데요.
stand on[upon] ceremony 라고 표현하면 '형식을 차리다.'라는
의미로 통합니다. 같은 의미로 without ceremony 라는 표현이 있고,
'소탈하게, 형식을 차리지 않는' 의 의미로 without ceremony라는
표현이 있습니다.
