Here in Korea, we have four distinct seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter.
Among them, the best seasons probably are spring and fall.
The climate in spring and fall is mild and comfortable here.
In particular, April is the most beautiful time in the azalea in full bloom.
(*) azalea: 진달래. cf) the golden bell: 개나리

Winter comes after fall.

1) 물을 긷다: draw water (from a well)
2) 풀 베러 가다: go mowing
ANS 1) The next morning I drew water as usual and was just going out to mow grass, when the autumn rain began to fall silently.
ANS 2) The following morning, as I was going out to mow grass after drawing water as usual, the autumn rain began to drizzle.

→ 제비가 날아오고 진달래와 벚꽃이 피면서 시작된다: …come/begin with the arrival of the swallow and with the blooming of…
→ characterize as~는 「…
ANS) In Korea spring comes with the arrival of the swallows from the south and with the blooming of azaleas and cherry blossoms in late March of early April. Summer in Korea is hot and rainy. The summer usually begins in June. The temperature rises above 20℃(68℉) in most areas of Korea, and especially in July there are many rainy days. Fall is rather short, about two months from the middle of September to November. It is the most pleasant season of the year, because the days are clear and sunny. Winter in Korea can be characterized as cold and dry, though it snows frequently in most parts of the country.

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

→ 천고마비의 계절: a season when the sky is clear and blue the horses grow stout; a season with clear and high skies and fat horses
가을이 되면: when autumn comes; in autumn
→ 풍성한 추수: a rich harvest; abundant crops; bumper crops
→ 마음의 양식: things that enrich one's mind
(ANS 1) Autumn is with us now. Autumn is often called in Korea a season when the sky is clear and blue and the horses grow shout or a good season for reading. When autumn comes, we seek things that enrich our mind, enjoying a rich harvest under high skies.
(ANS 2) Autumn has come. We often call autumn in Korea a season with clear and high skies and fat horses or a season in which we can enjoy burning the midnight oil. In autumn we look for something to read under high skies, contented with good harvests.

Though Words, but Can Gorbachev Deliver?
This autumn the President has a major opportunity to deliver on his pledge.(금년 가을, 대통령은 약속을 실행할 기회가 있다.)

I always get spring fever.
I'm always greatly affected by fall[summer, winter].

I haven't met Mr. Right yet.
June bride
I haven't met Mr. Right yet.

Mindful of the nation's declining economy, the Korean
Broadcasting System (KBS) will remove from its fall programming,
which starts today, elements which may foster excessive
extravagance or consumption.

```Removing the bubbles' has been the theme in revising
programming for fall. As the state-run broadcasting company, we
felt that we should take the lead,'' said Ahn Kuk-jong, head of
the programming operation section at KBS.
KBS프로그램운영국 안국종국장은 "이번 가을 개편에서의 가장 큰 목
표는 '거품 제거'라고 할 수 있으며, 공영방송으로서 앞장서 해야 할
일으로 생각하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
The fall rescheduling has resulted in 19 new programs, six on
KBS-1 and 13 on KBS-2. The programs reflect the broadcasting
company's other objectives: to increase programs with active
audience participation, to contribute to people's adaptation to
globalization and to pay more attention to children and youth.
T : Everyone, look outside. It's raining now. Fall rain...
S : Ms. Lee, how about teaching us an English popsong?
T : Should I? What song would be good? Oh, I got it.
Last night, I saw a classic movie on TV. The story was about one unlucky man.
S : I also saw it with my father.
My father likes the song used in the movie.
The song goes like this, ra-ra-ra-ra-ra...
T : Right. I will teach you that song, "Raindrops keep falling on my head."
교사: 여러분, 밖을 보세요. 비가 내리고 있어요. 가을비가...
학생: 선생님, 팝송을 가르쳐 주세요.
교사: 그럴까? 어떤 노래가 좋을까? 아! 생각났다. 어젯밤에
TV에서 오래된 유명한 영화 한 편 봤는데, 한 불행한 남자에 대한 얘기였어.
학생: 저도 아빠와 함께 그 영화 봤어요. 거기에 나오는 노래를 아빠가 좋아하셔서. 그 노래가, 라-라-라....
교사: 맞다. 이번 시간에 그 노래, "Raindrops keep falling on my head"를 배워보자.
I always feel sad in the fall, when trees begin to lose their beautiful apparel of leaves.
나무들이 아름다운 잎의 옷을 벗기 시작하는 가을에 나는 언제나 슬프다.
On the average, babies born in the spring are taller and heavier than those born at other times of the year.
In spring, growing children gain most rapidly in height.
The increase is almost twice that of a similar period in fall.
The very chemical composition of our blood changes slightly in the spring;
we sense the coming of the season in our life stream.
평균적으로 봄에 태어나는 아기들이 1년 중 다른 때에 태어나는 아기들보다 더 크고 더 무겁다.
봄에는 성정하는 아이들의 키가 가장 빨리 자란다.
그 증가는 가을의 비슷한 기간에 일어나는 증가의 거의 두 배가 된다.
봄에는 혈액에 들어 있는 다름 아닌 화학 성분이 약간 변화한다.
따라서 우리는 우리의 생명의 흐름 속에서 계절이 오는 것을 느낀다.
How do birds know when to fly south?
Some people think it's cool weather that tells them to leave.
But other don't believe this is true.
They think the birds start to migrate when the fall days grow shorter.
Some birds migrate only short distances.
Others fly thousands of miles.
And the birds don't get lost at all!
새들은 언제 남쪽으로 날아갈지를 어떻게 알까?
어떤 사람들은 그들을 떠나도록 알려주는 것은 바로 시원한 날씨라고 생각한다.
그러나 다른 사람들은 이것이 사실이라고 믿지 않는다.
그들은 가을의 낮이 점점 짧아질 때 새들이 이동하기 시작한다고 믿는다.
어떤 새들은 단지 짧은 거리만을 이동한다.
다른 새들은 수천 마일을 날아간다.
그리고 그 새들은 전혀 길을 잃지 않는다.
I know that my apple trees bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.
And I also know that it is only natural that your children should return that interest by picking the apples that hang over your side of the fence.
But, to be plain with you, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them.
I am even more tired of waking these fine autumn mornings to find even the apples on my side of the fence much decreased in number.
저는 저희 사과나무들이 담 너머로 구부러져서 마치 귀댁의 자녀들을 관심 있게 내려다보는 것처럼 보인다는 것을 알고 있습니다.
또한 귀댁의 아이들이 귀댁의 담 쪽으로 열린 사과를 땀으로써 그 관심에 보답하는 것이 자연스럽다는 것도 알고 있습니다.
그러나 솔직히 말하면, 저는 귀댁의 아이들이 날마다 저희의 모든 사과나무의 한 쪽에서 가지들을 부러뜨려서 저희 사과나무들의 한 쪽에서 마치 전투가 일어난 것처럼 보이게 하는 데 짜증이 납니다.
심지어는 이처럼 좋은 가을날에 잠에서 깨어, 저희 담 쪽의 사과들까지 개수가 훨씬 줄어드는 것을 보게 되니 더욱 짜증이 납니다.
I have a new boat with all the latest comfort and safety features.
I plan to sail south, transit the Panama Canal, and cruise and explore the Western Caribbean from fall to winter.
In the spring I will sail north to New England.
I would like to find one non-smoking companion with some mechanical or electrical ability to help maintain the boat.
I have sailed approximately 40,000 ocean miles.
So I can teach an inexperienced person but I would prefer a man who has been on the ocean before.
I will pay all expenses and expect a commitment for seven to eight months.
저는 최신의 편의시설 및 안전장치를 갖춘 새 선박을 가지고 있습니다.
저는 가을부터 겨울까지 남쪽으로 항해하여, 파나마 운하를 지나, 서카리브해를 항해하며 탐사할 계획입니다.
봄에는 북쪽으로 항해하여 뉴잉글랜드로 갈 예정입니다.
기계 및 전기를 다룰 수 있어서 선박 관리를 도울 수 있고, 담배를 피우지 않는 동료를 구하고자 합니다.
저는 대략 4만 해리의 항해 경력이 있습니다.
그래서 무경험자를 가르칠 수는 있지만 항해 경험이 있는 사람이면 더 좋겠습니다.
제가 모든 비용을 댈 것이고 칠팔 개월 동안 온전히 전념할 수 있는 분을 기대합니다.
In the fall of 1980 I bought a Jones Typewriter, Portable Special Model, at ABC Store in Jonesville.
1980년 가을에 나는 Jonesville에 있는 ABC가게에서 휴대용 특별 모델 Jones Typewriter를 구입했다.
I had used it only a few days when the space bar broke.
Last fall I was diagnosed with lung cancer.
I had major surgery followed by five horrific months of chemotherapy.
지난 가을 나는 폐암으로 진단 받았고 큰 수술과 5개월간의 끔찍한 약물치료를 받았다.
My weight dropped to 92 pounds.
I lost all my hair, had hallucinations, nightmares and wanted to die.
내 체중은 92파운드까지 떨어졌고 머리가 다 빠지고 망사을 하고 악몽을 꾸고 죽기를 원했다.
To have gone through all this hell when I've never smoked a cigarette has made me very bitter.
내가 결코 담배를 피지 않았음에도 불구하고 이런 지옥같은 것을 겪는 것이 나를 더욱 고통스럽게 했다.
A day of apple picking is, in fact, a popular way to spend a fall day in New England.
실제로, 하루 정도 사과를 따면서 보내는 것은 뉴잉글랜드에서 가을날을 보내는 좋은 방법이다.
From Connecticut to Maine, it is generally possible to find an orchard within an hour's drive and the trip is well worth the time.
커넥티킷에서 메인에 이르기까지 차로 한시간 정도 가면 과수원을 쉽게 볼 수 있고 그러한 여행은 그 정도의 시간의 가치는 충분히 있다.
Not only will it provide you with plenty of the freshest apples to be found, but it also will give you a chance to take in some sunshine and autumn scenery and get some exercise.
그렇게 하면 신선한 사과를 많이 가질 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 약간의 일광욕도 할 수 있고 가을 풍경을 구경할 수도 있으며 운동도 좀 할 수 있다.
And the picking is usually best done by adults.
그리고 사과는 보통 어른들이 딴다.
Children should not climb up into trees and risk hurting themselves and damaging the trees―younger members of the family can have fun just romping around the orchard.
아이들은 나무에 올라가서는 안된다.
상처를 입을 위험이 따르고 나무를 다치게 할 수 도 있다.
가족 중 어린 아이들은 다만 가수원 주위를 장난치며 뛰노는 재미가 있다.
The weather is like the government, always in the wrong.
In summer time we say it is stifling; in winter that it is killing;
in spring and autumn we find fault with it for being neither one thing
nor the other, and wish it would make up its mind.
If it is fine, we say the country is being ruined for want of rain;
if it does rain, we pray for fine weather.
If December passes without snow, we indignantly demand to know what
has become of our good old-fashioned winters, and talk as if we had
been cheated out of something we had bought and paid for; and when
it does snow, our language is a disgrace to a Christian nation.
We shall never be content until each man makes his own weather,
and keeps it to himself.
날씨는 정부처럼 항상 잘못되기 마련이다.
여름에는 숨이 막힐 것처럼 너무 덥고, 겨울에는 얼어죽을 만큼 너무 춥고,
봄과 가을에는 이것도 저것도 아니라고 불평하며, 확실히 결정해주기를 바란다.
날씨가 맑으면 비가 오지 않아 농촌을 망친다고 하고, 비가 오면 맑기를 기도한다.
12월에 눈이 오지 않으면 좋았던 옛날 겨울이 어떻게 된 거냐고 화를 내고
마치 돈을 주고 산 것을 빼앗긴 듯이 말한다. 또 눈이 오면 심한 상소리를 한다.
모든 사람이 각자 자기가 원하는 날씨를 독점하게 될 때만 만족하게 될 것이다.
Puff The Magic Dragon -sung by Brothers Four
-
Puff the magic dragon
Lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
In a lnad called Honalee
Little Jackie Paper
Loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and
Sealing wax
And other fancy stuff
-
Together they would travel
On a boat with billowed sails
And jackie kept a lookout
Perchaed on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes
Would bow wherever they came
And pirate ships
Would lower their flags
When Puff roared outn his name
-
A dragon lives forever
But not so little boys
Painted wings and giants' rings
Make way for other toys
One grey night it happened
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon
He ceased his fearless roar
-
His head was bent in sorrow
Green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play
Along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend
Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon
Sadly slipped into his cave
그 곳 가을 안개속에 뛰놀았었지
실과 초, 그리고 다른 신기한 물건도
가져다 주었다네
재키는 퍼프의 커다란 꼬리 위에 앉아
망을 보았지
그들이 가는 곳마다
고귀한 왕과 왕자들은 머리를 숙였고
퍼프가 이름을 외쳐 부르면
해적선도 깃발을 내렸다네
-
** 두번 반복
용은 영원히 살 수 있지만
소년은 그렇지 않아
알록달록 색칠했던 퍼프의 날개와
어둑하던 어느날 밤 그렇게 되어버렸어
재키 페이퍼는 더 이상 오지 않았고
힘센 용 퍼프는
그의 거침없는 포효를 멈추었다네.
-
그는 슬픔으로 고개를 떨구었고
푸른 비늘은 비처럼 떨어졌다네
퍼프는 더 이상 체리나무 오솔길로
놀러가지 않았지
평생을 함께했던 벗이 없이는
퍼프는 용감할 수가 없었던 거야
그래서 힘센 용 퍼프는 슬픔에 잠겨
자신의 굴 속으로 돌아갔다네
[ Legalization of Euthanasia ]
[ 안락사의 합법화 ]
The Netherlands on Wednesday became the world's first country to legalize the controversial euthanasia, which was immediately met with both warm praise and outrage from around the world.
지난 수요일, 네덜란드는 세계 최초로 안락사를 합법화시킨 나라가 되면서 전 세계로부터 찬성과 반대의 격렬한 논쟁을 불러일으켰다.
It was the final legislative act in a 30-year public discussion over euthanasia in that country, although mercy killings and assisted suicides have been discreetly practiced and tolerated for years.
이것은 지난 30여년간 비록 안락사와 자살방조가 조심스럽게 행해지고 묵인되어오긴 했지만 국민적인 공론을 거듭한 끝에 나온 최종적인 입법 조치였다.
The law that passed through the Dutch upper house is expected to go into effect in autumn.
네덜란드 상원을 통과한 이 법안은 이번 가을부터 효력을 발휘할 것으로 보인다.
Doctors conducted an estimated 5,000 mercy killings a year in the Netherlands even before the legislation, and surveys show that doctors refuse far more requests to assist suicides than they accept.
합법화 조치 이전에도 네덜란드 의사들은 매년 약 5천 건에 달하는 안락사를 시행한 것으로 추정되고 있으며, 조사에 따르면 의사들은 그들이 행한 안락사보다 훨씬 더 많은 안락사 요청을 거절했다고 한다.
[ Clues to Dinosaurs' Demise Sought ]
[ 공룡 멸종의 단서를 찾기 원하는 과학자들 ]
The rock and dust kicked up by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago were not enough to kill the dinosaurs, according to researchers―but the debris may have sparked a deadly global chemical reaction in the atmosphere.
6천 5백만년전에 소행성의 충돌에 의해 날아간 바위와 먼지로는 공룡들을 죽이기에 충분치 않았을 것이라고 과학자들은 주장한다.
New studies show the Chicxulub impact crater on the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is smaller than once thought, making dinosaur extinction difficult to explain completely.
새로운 연구에서는 멕시코의 유카탄반도 해안에 있는 치크술루브(Chicxulub) 충돌 화구가 과거 생각했던 것보다 더 작아서, 공룡의 멸종을 충분히 설명하기가 어렵다는 사실이 밝혀졌다.
Researchers presented those findings Sunday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting.
과학자들은 이런 발견품들을 미국 지구물리학회(AGU) 가을 모임에서 제시하였다.
"If you rely on little pieces of debris actually clobbering organisms, then you're in trouble," said Virgil "Buck" Sharpton of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
“만일 당신이 공룡을 멸종시킨 조그만 파편 조각에 의지하고 있다면, 문제에 빠지게 될 것이다.” 라고 알래스카 대학의 Virgil Buck Shaptom 이 말했다.
이 모든 것들이 조화를 이루어 가을에 아름다운 색채를 즐길 수 있다.
The women had primary responsibility for the fields. They had to
excercise considerable skill to produce the desired results, for their
northern location meant fleeting growing seasons. Winter often lingered
; autumn could be ushered in by severe frost. For good measure, during
the spring and summer, drought, heat, hail, grasshoppers, and other
frustrations might await the wary grower.
농지에서는 여자들이 주된 책임을 맡았다. 그들은 요구되는 결과를 산출하기
위해서 대단한 기술을 발휘해야만 했는데, 왜냐하면 그들이 북쪽으로 위치한
것은 재배할 수 있는 기간이 빨리 지나간다는 것을 의미했기 때문이다. 흔히
겨울은 오래 머물렀고, 심한 서리에 의해서 가을이 예고될 수 있었다. 게다가
또 덤으로, 봄과 여름에는 가뭄, 더위, 우박, 메뚜기, 그리고 다른 좌절의
요소(재해)들이 그 농부들을 기다리고 있을 수도 있었다.
Later in the fall, the people picked the rest of the corn. They saved
the best of the harvest for seeds or for trade, with the remainder eaten
right away or stored for later use in underground reserves. With
appropriate banking of the extra food, the Mandans protected themselves
against the disaster of crop failure and accompanying hunger.
중에서 가장 좋은 것들은 씨로서 또는 교역을 위해서 보관하고, 나머지는
즉시 먹거나 차후의 사용을 위해서 지하 저장고에 보관되었다. 여분의 음식을
적당하게 저장함으로써 Mandan 사람들은 농사 실패와 그에 따르는 기아의
재난에 대비해서 자신들을 보호했다.
A study this fall by the National Highway Safety Administration
concluded that air bags increase the fatality risk to children in the
front passenger seat by 30 percent. Car-makers last week were planning
to send warning letters to the owners of some 15 million cars about the
danger air bags pose to children.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota has a much larger variation in temperature between January and July than the coastal cities of Portland, Maine.
South Dakota 주의 Sioux Falls는 1월과 7월 사이에 Maine 주의 Portland에 있는 해안 도시들보다 훨씬 더 기온의 변화가 크다.
The main reason is that water has a much larger heat capacity than land.
주된 이유는 물이 육지보다 훨씬 더 큰 열흡수력을 갖기 때문이다.
In other words, water temperature changes very slowly compared to soil temperature.
다시 말해, 수온은 지온에 비해 아주 천천히 변한다.
This is why coastal cities do not warm up as fast as cities in the Plains during spring and summer and why they do not cool down as fast during fall and winter.
이렇기 때문에 해안 도시들은 봄과 여름 동안에 대초원에 있는 도시들만큼 빨리 더워지지 않고 가을과 겨울 동안에도 그렇게 빨리 식지 않는다.
If it were not for the oceans, coastal cities would have much colder winters and much warmer summers.
[John's Diary]
오늘은 날씨가 꼭 가을같다. 어젯밤 비가 내려서 그런지 모처럼
하늘도 높고 아침 공기가 촉촉했다. 아침 일찍 일어난다는 게
이렇게 기분이 좋은 건지 예전엔 미처 몰랐다. 오늘도 옆집
똥개가 짖는 소리를 못 들었다. 삼복 더위에 주인한테
잡혀먹었나? 쯧쯧..불쌍한 것. 질과 Neo Killer II 조조를 보기로
했는데 아직 시간이 많이 남았다. 그래도 방심하지 말고 일찍
서두르기로 했다.
It felt like a typical cool autumn day this morning. Thanks
to last night's rain, the sky was high and the morning air
was real fresh and moist. Never did I think getting up early
would feel this good. Again, I couldn't hear the next door
mutt barking his head off. Maybe the owner decided it was
time to eat old spot to mark the dog days of summer.
Tsk...Tsk... Poor mongrel. Jill and I would see the first
showing of Neo Killer II. I had plenty of time left, but I'd
better hurry not to be late again.
1. 오늘은 날씨가 꼭 가을같다.
우리말을 영어로 옮길 때의 기본은 '단어가 아닌 뜻'을 옮긴다는
것입니다. Today was like ... 식으로 영작을 하는 건 전형적인
콩글리시지요. 우선 우리말을 머리에 새겼으면, 그 뜻을 기반으로
영어로 '말'을 해야 합니다.
이 문장에서 주의깊게 볼 것은 주어지요. 우리말의 주어를 영어에
그대로 써먹으려고 해서는 안됩니다. 문법 시간에는 '이런 데서
비인칭 주어를 쓰는구나'라고 배웠으면서도 막상 영어로는
못써먹는 게 바로 '우리말의 주어'를 떨쳐버리지 못하기
때문이지요.
또 한가지 특징을 보자면 원문에 없는 typical이나, cool이니
하는 수식어가 들어갔다는 것입니다. 우리말의 '가을 같다'는
뜻을 전달하려면 영어로는 이런 수식어 정도는 붙여줘야 하지요.
겨울 같았으면 아마, typical cold winter라고 했겠지요. 이처럼
어느 정도 'creative'할 수 있으면 맛깔나는 영작이 나올 수
있습니다.
2. 어젯밤 비가 내려서 그런지 모처럼 하늘도 높고 아침 공기가
촉촉했다. 어젯밤에 비가 내려서 그런지… 영어로 옮기려면
어디서 손을 대야 할까요? 우선 뜻을 새기세요. '비가 내려서
그런지'는 다른 말로 '아마도 비나 내려서,' '비 때문에,' '비
덕분에'로 생각할 수 있습니다. Thanks to 정도는 고등학교때
외웠던 기억이 나시겠지요? 지난밤 비는 영어로도 last night's
rain 정도면 충분합니다.
영작에서는 가지치기도 중요합니다. 물론, 칼같이 정확히 옮기는
것도 좋겠지만, 그다지 중요하지 않은 문장 성분에 신경쓰다보면
잘 해 놓은 영어 작문도 이런 문장 성분을 끼워 맞추려다 망치게
되지요. 여기서는 '모처럼'이 예가 되겠네요. 이걸 영어로
옮기려고 잘된 문장에 끼워맞추려하지 마세요. 때로는 가지를 친
문장이 더 아름답고 깔끔합니다.
3. 아침 일찍 일어난다는 게 이렇게 기분이 좋은 건지 예전엔
미처 몰랐다.
'얼마전까지 아니었는데 이제야 ~했다' 에 해당하는 전형적인
표현이 never did I ~식의 부정 도치구문이지요. 도치를 하는 건
단순히 강조를 위해서입니다. 부정어도 부사지요. 부사가
문장앞으로 나가 도치가 되면 동사를 끌고 나가려 합니다. 부사와
동사는 불가분의 관계니까. 그런데, 동사는 못나가니까 조동사가
나가게 되지요.
Never did I dream you'd love me too.
너도 날 사랑할 줄은 꿈에도 미쳐 몰랐어.
이정도는 해야 놀랐다는 의미가 전달되겠지요. 원래 문장을
그대로 쓴다면,
I never dreamed you'd love me too.
밋밋하지요?
4. 오늘도 옆집 똥개가 짖는 소리를 못 들었다.
옆집 개가 짖는건 첫번째 일기부터 계속봤으니 영어로 뭐라고
하시는 줄 아실테구요. 똥개라는 표현도 mutt 또는 mongrel이라는
거 배우셨지요?
The next door mutt is barking.
이렇게 쉬운 문장을 barking his head off라고 썼습니다. 쉬운
문장이니까 약간 멋을 부린 것이지요. 머리가 떨어져나갈 정도로
짖는다지요? 아마 우리말이었다면, '동네가 떠나가라고 짖다'
정도일 겁니다. 응용을 해볼까요?
She cried her eyes out.
눈이 빠져라고 울었다.
She screamed her head off.
머리가 떨어져나가라고 비명을 질렀다.
근데 번역을 보고 외우면 나중에 거꾸로, '너무 울어서 눈이
퉁퉁불었다,' '귀청이 떨어져라 비명을 질렀다'는 우리 말 문장을
보면 위와같은 영어 문장이 나오지 못할 수도 있어요. 그러니까,
반드시 '의미'로 문장이나 표현을 받아들이고 새기시기 바랍니다.
5. 삼복 더위에 주인한테 잡혀먹었나?
어려운 말이 나옵니다. 삼복 더위. 미국에도 삼복 더위는 있지만
우리와는 개념이 좀 틀리지요. 우리는 삼복 더위에 개를
잡아먹지만, 미국에서는 개가 불쌍할 정도로 더운 날이라고
생각하지요. 그래서 dog days라고 합니다. 자 그럼, 삼복 더위에
잡혀먹는 건 영어로 옮기기 쉬운 다른 말로 하면 무슨 뜻일까요?
삼복 중 (초,중,말복) 한날을 기념해서 잡아먹었다. 쉽지요?
기념한다는 건 celebrate를 쓸 수 있겠지만 복을 이정도로 축제로
생각하는 사람은 없을 테니 mark 정도면 충분합니다.
Today marks our 30th wedding anniversary.
오늘이 결혼 30주년이지요.
재미있는 단어가 하나 나오지요. Spot. 우리나라에서 가장 흔한
강아지 이름이 바둑이라면 미국에서는 spot이지요. 둘다
점박이라는 건 공통점입니다.
6. 쯧쯧..불쌍한 것.
쯧쯧… 이런 의성어는 모르면 못 쓰지요. 의성어는 대책이
없습니다. 나오는 데로 외워두든가 조그만 사전을 만드세요. Tsk.
Tsk. Mongrel. 똥개지요. 위에서 한번 mutt를 썼으니까 여기서는
다른 표현을 쓴 겁니다. 영어는 반복을 싫어하는 언어거든요.
7. 질과 Neo Killer II 조조를 보기로 했는데 아직 시간이 많이
남았다.
조조. 또 어렵네요. 근데 다시 한번 보면 단순히 '1회'라는
말이니 the first showing이면 되지요. 미국에서는 1회 할인보다
matinee라고 해서 낮시간대 할인이 더 많습니다.The Neo theater
offers an extra discount for the matinee showtimes just
before 6 PM.
네오극장에서는 저녁 여섯시 이전 낮시간 대에는 표값이
할인되지요.
여기서는 긴 한문장이지만 영어로는 두 문장을 썼습니다. 이처럼,
우리말이 한문장이라고 해서 반드시 한문장으로 옮기려들지
마세요. 틀리기 십상입니다. 의미가 더 분명해질 것 같으면
언제든지 문장을 chop it off!
8. 그래도 방심하지 말고 일찍 서두르기로 했다.
방심하지 말자. 한영사전으로 달려가지 마세요. 여기서 방심하지
않는다는 건 '또 늦지 않기 위해서'의 뜻입니다. 우리는 지금
'단어'를 영작하는 게 아니고 '말의 뜻'을 풀이해서 영어로
전달하는 거잖아요?
In Lawrence, the University of Kansas' international advisers
Health care cannot be neglected in order to fully enjoy the atmosphere of autumn that gets shorter every year.
특히 가을철 진드기 매개 감염병인 쯔쯔가무시, 중증열성혈소판감소증후군(SFTS)등이 빈번하게 발생하고 있어, 벌초나 성묘 등 야외활동 시 피부노출을 최소화 하고 기피제를 사용하는 등 진드기에 물리지 않도록 주의해야 한다.
In particular, due to frequent outbreaks of the tsutsugamushi disease, a mite-mediated infectious disease in autumn, and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), care should be taken not to get bitten by ticks, such as minimizing skin exposure and using odors during outdoor activities such as weeds and graves.
대표적인 진드기 매개 감염병인 쯔쯔가무시증은 전체 환자의 90%가, 신증후군 출혈열과 렙토스피라증은 60% 이상이 가을철에 발생한다.
According to the number of food poisoning cases by causative bacteria between 2014 and 2018, pathogenic coliform bacillus food poisoning increased by 28% and norovirus food poisoning increased by 14%.
남성의 경우 가을에 남성호르몬인 테스토스테론의 분비량이 많아져 남성형 탈모에 영향을 미친다.
In the case of men, the secretion of the male hormone testosterone increases in the fall, which affects male pattern hair loss.
이는 환절기 기온변화, 일교차, 미세먼지, 가을황사 등의 기후환경요인이 복합적으로 작용하기 때문인 것으로 소방청은 분석했다.
The National Fire Agency analyzed that this is due to a combination of climate and environmental factors such as temperature changes, daily temperature differences, fine dust, and autumn yellow dust.
이를 감안하면 방역체계가 잘 작동하더라도 소규모 지역사회 감염이 '조용히' 지속하다가 가을과 겨울에 어느 한 곳에서 '집단감염'이 벌어지면서 유행이 다시 시작될 수 있다.
Considering this, even if the quarantine system works well, small-scale community transmission can continue "quietly" and the spread can resume when "mass infection" takes place in one place in the fall and winter.
찬바람이 부는 가을이 되면 우울감, 무기력증 등을 호소하는 사람이 늘어난다.
In autumn when the cold wind blows, more people complain of depression and lethargy.
Digital music gadgets first made a splash last fall when Diamond
Multimedia introduced the Rio, a portable device that allows users to
transfer MP3 files off the Internet onto their personal computer, and
then store them and play them back on the portable gizmo. The Rio and
