Boxing Day

Finding evidence doesn't always mean a criminal will be convicted.
Proving that a person is guilty or innocent of a crime is the job of lawyers.
One of the most famous lawyers of all time was Clarence Darrow.
Darrow was very famous in America around the start of the twentieth century.
He often defended people who were thought to be guilty and took on many unpopular cases.
In particular, he defended poor people who usually would not be able to afford a good lawyer.
During trials, he was a great speaker and argued very well.
He won many cases, even when the evidence was against him.

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

Once a poor student had to wander about the countryside.
He had no money, and he had no home.

When it comes to teaching moral behavior, it's not what you say but what you do that counts the most.
The negative side of this is illustrated by the words “The footsteps a child follows are most likely the ones his parents thought they had covered up.” Positive role-modeling, on the other hand, can bring big rewards.
Every year, Amy's parents gave holiday dinners to unfortunate families.
At age ten, Amy organized a fund-raiser for giving free meals to poor children.
In an age when so many kids are thinking only of themselves, how did Amy give a helping hand?
“I watched my parents,” she says simply.

Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher who lived in the 12th century, was as current as the 1990s when he described the eight levels of charity.
As you read these words, ask yourself how many people measure up to these lofty standards.
Going from the lowest level of charity to the highest, here are the eight levels:
1. He who gives unwillingly.

2. He who gives cheerfully, but not enough.

7. The giver does not know to whom he gives, nor does the poor man know from whom he receives.
8. The highest form of charity is to strengthen the hand of the poor man by giving him a loan, joining him in partnership, or training him out of his poverty, to help him establish himself.

Something to Remember

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
― Abraham Lincoln

The truth is this: men quote proverbs the better to express themselves.
Proverbs are the wit of the inarticulate.
Proverbs are the gospel of the poor.
Folk sayings are the college of the masses.

Americans have watched their big cities fall slowly into disrepair and die.
Many middle-class people leave the cities, and the very rich and the very poor stay behind.

The story goes that Alfred once took refuge in the cottage of a poor
peasant. The good wife was left in ignorance of his identity and therefore had
little time for this seemingly idle fellow. For Alfred spent his time gazing
into the fire and dreaming of further plans to defeat the Danes. Called upon
some errand, the good wife drew his attention to some cakes which were baking in
front of the fire, and told him that he must watch them carefully during her
absence. Alas! So preoccupied was the English king that the good wife found, on
her return, nothing but a few remains of her cakes. Whereupon, the angry woman
seized the royal hair and proceeded to scold him severely. So runs the story.
Whether it is truth or legend we cannot confirm.

American financial tycoon Carnegie spoke of the disgrace of dying rich and argued
that the millionare should "be but a trustee for the poor."

No longer can the poor count on working their way steadily toward a better
life. And no longer do Americans share the great expectations of generations past.

If he himself rose out of poverty, and filled a great position before he
died at the age of forty-three, this was not, I fancy, due to that
ambition to which most poor boys who afterwards achieve eminence owe
their success. He was, so far as I could judge, as free from ambition
in the ordinary sense of the word as any man who ever lived. If he rose
from position to position, it was not because he thrust himself on the
attention of his employers, but because his employers insisted on promoting
him. He was naturally a man of creative energy, a man who lived by his
imagination, and could no more help being conspicuous among ordinary human
beings than a gold coin in a plate of silver.

In New York, there are as many rich people as poor people.

A poor musician was playing his guitar in the middle of a busy shopping
center. Walking over, a policeman asked, "May I see your permit?" "I
don't have one," the musician said. "In that case, you'll have to
accompany me." " Wonderful`" the musician responded gladly. "What shall
we sing?"

Running scared
Laying low
Seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places
Only they would know
Lie―la―lie .....
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Lie-la-lie .....
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down or cut him
till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
Lie-la-lie .....

beggarly 아주 가난한

Riches come better after poverty than poverty after riches.

According to Mother Teresa, she wanted to love and minister to the poor “not to serve Christ” but rather because “they are Christ.” With this in mind,
Mother Teresa began the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and in 1952 started her first home for the dying.
In 1953 Mother Teresa opened her first orphanage and in 1957 she began her work with the lepers.

Many countries around the world do not have comprehensive welfare systems to take care of their disabled and the poorest members of the society.
In those countries you can sometimes see poor people begging in subway stations or in the streets.
Most of the beggars are homeless.

Since 1939 the U.S has had a "food stamp" program for poor people.
Food stamps can be used to buy food.
But the program is controversial.
Critics say that it makes people lazy because they don't have to work to get money for food.

Conventional vaccines are costly to make and distribute in the impoverished Third World countries that need them most.
That's why Arntzen and others began thinking about using plants instead of needles, creating vaccines that would be easy to grow locally in, say, Vietnam or Bangladesh.

The labor that ran the factories and built the railways was recruited in
part from American farm areas where people were being displaced by farm
machinery, in part from Asia, and in part from Europe. Europe now began
to send tides of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe ― most of
whom were originally poor farmers but who settled in American industrial
cities. The money to finance this tremendous expansion of the American
economy still came from European financiers for the most part, but the
Americans were approaching the day when their expansion could be
financed in their own "money market".
