yuppie 〔ｊ´∧ｐｉ〕 여피족(미국의 전후(1940년대 말에서 50년대초)에 태어난 젊은 엘리트 층)
yuppie 유피족(=young urban professional) *미국에서 1940년대 말에서 1950년대 전반에 걸쳐 태어난 세대로, 대도시 교외에 사는 유복한 화이트 칼라를 가리킨다.
A yuppie was driving his new BMW convertible. He had the top down, his
right hand on the wheel and his left arm hanging over the door.
With the tape deck going full blast, he didn't notice the rust bucket
that pulled around to pass until it sideswiped him. The yuppie pulled
to a stop.
"My car!" he cried. "My beautiful car!"
When a policeman came by, the yuppie told him about the accident.
His car was a wreck, and it didn't even have 50 miles on it.
"You've got more to worry about than your car," the officer replied.
"You need an ambulance. Your arm is badly injured."
The yuppie looked at his arm and cried, "My Rolex watch―my beautiful
Rolex!"
한 유피족이 새로 산 고급 컨버티블 승용차를 운전하고 있었다. 차 지붕을
내리고, 오른손은 핸들을 잡고, 왼쪽 팔은 자동차 문 위에 걸쳐놓았다.
카 스테레오를 크게 틀어놓았기 때문에 고물 차가 추월하려다 옆을 들이박을
때까지 알지 못했다. 유피족은 차를 세웠다.
"내 차!" 그가 소리쳤다. "아름다운 내 차!"
경찰관이 왔을 때, 유피족은 사고 난 경위를 이야기했다. 그의 차는 형편없는
꼴이 되었는데 주행 기록은 50마일도 되지 않았다.
"당신에겐 자동차보다 더 큰 걱정거리가 있습니다." 경찰관이 응답했다.
"구급차가 필요합니다. 당신 팔이 심하게 다쳤어요."
유피족은 그의 팔을 바라보고 소리쳤다. "내 로렉스 시계, 내 아름다운 로렉스!"
