→ 「어디로 보든지」, 「사람이 너무 좋다」의 처리가 문제이다.

- 당시, 많은 젊은 한국인들은 견문을 넓히기 위해서 미국으로 건너갔다.
Many young Koreans went to America to see and hear a lot then.

→ 조금 긴 문제 문장이지만 내용적으로는 평이하다. 「적당한 것」, 「더불어」는 다음의 예문을 참고로 해서 표현하도록 하자.

→ 「둘도 없는」은 말 그대로는 irreplaceable이지만, most precious; more valuable than any thing else처럼 번역하는 것이 좋을 것이다. 「다시금 확인하고」도 「새로이 인식하다」로 해서 appreciate [or recognize] ~ again으로 한다.
- 소중한 생명을 함부로 여기지 말아라.
Don't slight your precious life. You should not put your very existence in danger.
- 민호는 그들의 둘도 없는 아들이었다.
Minho was their dearest child.
- 그는 우리 대학의 교수진에 매우 소중한 존재이다.

→ 「춘천에 가려고 하다가…」는 술어동사로 intend를 쓴다면, 춘천에는 결국 가지 못하고 말았으므로 과거완료형을 써야 한다. 실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
→ 「못 가고 말았다」는 「실현되지 못했다」로 풀어서 옮길 수 있다. 「실현하다」는 뜻은 materialize, realize, actualize, fulfill 등으로 나타낼 수 있다.
→ 매주 한 번씩 출강한 일이 있다: I had given weekly lectures.
→ 나에게는 사연이 있었다: I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. 6. 일이 곤란해지면 도와드리겠습니다. 나의 아버지도 도와드릴 것입니다.
→ If를 사용하여 표현하면 If you should be in difficulty, ~로 되는데 If를 생략하고 싶으면 주어와 조동사(should)의 위치를 바꾸면 동일한 내용으로 「만일 당신이 곤란을 겪게 되면」이라는 뜻이 된다.「S도 역시~」는 so+(조)동사+S를 사용해서 표현할 수도 있다.
→ 도치시키지 않고 and so my father will로 하면 so는「그러므로」의 뜻이 된다.
→「곤란하게 되다」 get into trouble/ be in difficulty

[比較] bear, stand, endure, persevere, tolerate
가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 낱말이 bear이고 stand는 bear보다 좀더 구어적이며 일상적인(colloquial and informal) 표현에서 쓰이며, endure는 「좀더 장기간에 걸쳐 참고 견딘다」는 뜻을 나타낸다.
I can't bear that dull friend of yours./ I can't stand all this noise.
The capacity to endure a more or less monotonous life is one which should be acquired in childhood.
tolerate는 사람이나 행위를 대상으로 할 뿐 고통 등을 목적어로 삼지 못하며 「아량을 가지고 (참는다)」는 뜻을 내포한다.
I can't tolerate this unruly behavior.
persevere는 「(어려운 상황에서도) 끈기 있게 버텨나간다」는 뜻을 갖는다.
If you persevere in your studies, you will not fail.

[比較] special, particular, specific
special은 다른 것과 구별되는 독특한 성격·성질·용도를 가진 것을 말한다. 보통이 아닌 것(uncommon)이기 때문에 유별난 배려와 취급을 받는 것, 또한 생각에 마땅히 그런 것을 본받아야 하는 것을 말한다.
The baby requires a special soap and a special powder./ He is a special friend of mine.
particular는 주의를 끌기 위해서 같은 종류의 많은 다른 것 중에서 골라내는 것 또는 어떤 사물의 개성·특이성을 강조한다.

또 논리학에서 particular는 universal(보편적인)의 반대어로, 「특수한」이란 뜻으로 같은 종류의 하나 또는 몇몇에 관한 명제·판단·개념 따위에 관해서 쓰인다.
Some men are highly intelligent.는 particular proposition(특칭 명제)이고 All men make mistakes.는 universal proposition(총칭 명제)이다.
specific은 철학·과학용어로는 generic(속에 특유한)의 반대어로, genus(속)와 구별되는「species(종)에 독특한」을 의미한다.
Both the common violet and the pansy are violas, but their specific differences are more obvious than their specific likeness.
보다 일반적인 용법에서는, 어느 특별한 예증, 경우를 분명히 들어서 보이는 뜻을 갖는다.

[比較] tell, inform, advise, acquaint, apprise, notify
구두나 서면으로 ‘알리다’의 뜻에서 tell은 일반적인 말이며, inform(알리다, 통지하다)은 약간 격식을 차리는 딱딱한 말로, 한 사실이나 사정에 관한 지식을 어느 사람한테 직접 전하는 것을 강조한다.
Her letter informed us how and when she expected to arrive.
관청계에서 inform이라고 하면, 정보, 지식의 일편을 주는 것뿐만 아니라, 그런 것을 알려 주었다는 것을 정보, 지식을 받는 이에게 통고하는 것까지도 말한다.

무슨 일을 inform한다면, 그저 알린다고 하는 경우보다 그 일이 한결 권위 있는 일이라고 보는 것이다. informed sources(권위 있는 소식통, 확실한 소식통)란 말은 신문에서 그저 소문(rumor, gossip)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰여지는 수가 흔하지만, 무슨 일을 단지 들은 사람보다는 믿을 만한 것이라고 일반적으 that this was their final notice.
acquaint를 ‘알리다’의 뜻으로 쓰는 것은 영국에서는 고문체이지만 미국에서는 표준적 용법이다.

apprise는 별로 쓰이지 않는 딱딱한 말로, 개개 of가 따른다.

use는 일반적인 말로 한 사물을 자기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단이나 도움으로 삼는 것을 말한다.
use a pencil(telephone)/ Use your eyes, child! It's right there in front of you!
사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 사람을 수동적인 물건으로 보는 데서 흔히 치욕적인 의미를 갖고 있고 이기적이고 흉한 뜻을 암시한다.
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
따라서 I could use your help this afternoon.이라고 하는 것이 I could use you this afternoon.이라고 하는 것보다 재치 있는 표현이지만, 친한 사이에는 후자는 전자를 단축한 것으로 인정될 수 있다. 또 흔히 ‘소비하다’의 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

또한 used는 미국 상업 용어에서 secondhand(헌), worn(낡은)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰인다.
