Purchasing power
원래 '구매력'이라는 말이 의미하는 바는 value of money as
measured by the goods and services it can buy 즉, 구매할 수

Why Are 3 Currencies Converging?
Two of the world's major currencies, the dollar and the euro, are now
worth nearly the same amount, and the third, the Japanese yen, happens to
be in alignment with both. It's easy to remember: one dollar equals about
one euro equals about 100 yen.
This cozy convergence doesn't mean all three currencies are actually
worth the same in terms of the near-equivalence of the dollar, euro and
100 yen is a curious accident produced by currency markets.
But there are some clear benefits, especially for travelers.
In Europe, think of euro prices as dollars. In Japan, knock the last two
zeros off every price, making a 10,000-yen dinner check the same as $100.

Here are some questions and answers about the currency situation:
Q: Why have these three currencies come so close together?
A: Generally speaking, the dollar has been sitting in the middle while
the yen rises and the euro falls. A rising Japanese stock market and
hopes for economic recovery there have increased demand for yen, while
doubts about Europe's economic policies have been hurting the euro.

Q: So is the yen's rise a good thing for Japan?
A: Not exactly.
Even though investors are bullish about Japan, the high yen has become a
headache for the Japanese because it shrinks profits from exports and
could threaten an economic recovery.
Japan's central bank has been trying to bring the yen lower by selling
yen to buy dollars in currency markets, but it hasn't had much success so
far.

Q: What does all this mean for the U.S. economy?
A: For now, there's not much effect on the United States, but that could
change.
When the dollar went into a freefall against the yen in 1995, at one
point dipping below 80 yen, U.S. and Japanese financial authorities acted
forcefully.
There were fears then that unless the trend were reversed, Japanese
exporting companies would be crippled and inflation would surge in the
United States by making Japanese goods more expensive.
