[比較] danger, peril, jeopardy, hazard, risk
the danger of failing on icy walks(빙판 길에서 넘어질 위험)/ troubled by the danger that the manuscript might be lost/ Miners at work are always in danger.
The burning house put them in peril of death.
When a mine caves in, the miners are in peril.(광산의 지반이 떨어지면 광부들은 큰 위험을 당한다.)
To save his friend he put his life in jeopardy.
Liberty is in jeopardy under tyrants.
Travel on the thoroughfares of Manila was not without its hazards.

[比較] subject, theme, topic

Water-falls are from very early times a favorite theme for the painter./ The theme of a need for reform runs through his work.
The topic is treated fully in this section.
Baseball is their favorite topic of conversation.

[比較] surprise, astonish, amaze, astound, startle, dumfound, flabbergast
I'm surprised at your concern. 이것은 비교적 새로운 뜻이고, 본래의 옛 뜻은 '놀라도록 불시에 습격하다‘(come upon another suddenly and with starting effect), ’방심하고 있는 틈을 타서 치다’. Her friends planned to surprise her on her birthday with a gift. Their gift greatly surprised and pleased her.
He astonished many people by failing in college work after getting high grades in high school./ I am astonished to see him there.
New scientific discoveries constantly amaze us./ I was amazed at the news.
I was astounded by his proposal.
He was startled by a loud noise.
be dumfounded at the discovery
They were flabbergasted by this involuntary outbreak.

^^In general, 12 to 19 people are stationed at each of these
sub-stations working in three shifts with each team on duty for at
least 12 hours. At any one time, only one person is on duty at the box,
the other members of the team being out on patrol. This is not enough
to handle the work at the box. At least two officers should be on duty
there. And in order to have police work eight-hour shifts, and for there
to be three shifts a day, at the 3,404 boxes across the country, there
needs to be a 50 percent increase in the present 44,000 person police
force. Considerably more money from the government needs to be
spent to substantially improve the nation's police.

Benjamin Franklin once worked as a printer.
From his work, he realized how difficult it was to make books.
However, he really enjoyed reading and wanted to get as many books as he could.
Franklin came up with a good idea - to set up a club where people could share their books.
At last, fifty members joined the club in 1732.
The club members were allowed to take the books home with them.
This club, called Franklin's Club, is said to be America's first circulating library.

Thanks to a booming domestic film industry, the number of young aspiring filmmakers is increasing by the day.
Through many youth film festivals, more and more young directors have been showing off their innovative work.
The good thing about youth films is that young directors bring fresh new ways to look at film and filmmaking.

At the moment it's a bit hard because I'm not used to living away from home.
I have to do everything for myself, like cooking, washing and ironing.
Mom used to do all that!
Studying here is very different from high school in my home town.
We have to choose which lectures to go to and when to do it, but here you have more freedom.
I'm not used to that so I often leave my essays to the last minute.
Then I have to work right through the night, which is something I've never done before.

There have been several wars since 1945.
However, the United Nations has helped bring peace to some countries that were at war.
It has helped people who left their countries because of wars.
Also, it sends its workers to developing countries.
They work as planners to increase production in farming and industry.
They provide medical services, improve education programs, and spread scientific information.
They develop programs that provide jobs and better living conditions.
They help countries control their population growth.

The life of Dorothy and Patrick Tien has improved greatly since they both got new jobs.
Dorothy got a position as an editor at a publishing company.
Patrick was hired as a full-time consultant for a construction firm.
The difference between their new jobs and their old ones can be summed up in one word: flextime.
Until they secured these new positions, Dorothy and Patrick had a very difficult time raising their two small children.
Their life was very stressful because they were at the mercy of a nine-to-five schedule and had to pay a lot for day care.
To get to work on time, they had to have the children at the day care center by 7:30 every morning.

To some people, success at their jobs requires effort and struggle.
That is, the harder they work, the more successful they will be.
To others, successful career depends on how much money they make.
Still others think that achieving satisfaction and contentment by working at a job they really like is the prime measure of success.
Reaching a desired position in their profession is another standard of success that some people use.
Success at a job, therefore, means different things to different people.

Sociologists have noticed several things about young people today.
First, they like to hang out in malls, at coffeehouses, and in parks.
They seem to enjoy being with their friends in large open places.
Second, these young people seem to expect special treatment like not having to follow the rules.
They can also work quickly with their hands on things like computers and other electronic tools.
Fifty or sixty years ago, teenagers all wore white sailor hats.
Now something else is trendy: sports clothing.
There is, in fact, a boom in sales of sports clothes.

Some managers spend much of their working time at home, especially those who work a lot on computers.
They can send their work to the company by fax or through the Internet.
There are many advantages in working at home, including more flexible hours and better productivity.
‘Home managers' also save time and money on transportation costs.
In the future, many more managers will be able to work at home, thanks to modern technology and telecommunication.

When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

All the children at school love Mr. Rider.
He has worked at the school for a long time.
He cleans the floors and keeps everything neat.
He is very nice to the children, too.
He helps them with their schoolwork and often finds things they have lost in school.
One day the children thought, “Let's do something nice for Mr. Rider.” They bought him a beautiful tie and a pair of socks.
The next morning when he came to work, everyone shouted, “Surprise!”
Mr. Rider said it was the best surprise he ever had.

We are all very glad that the new train line has opened to take people to Euro-Disney.
However, I must report that the trains are very crowded and uncomfortable.
This is especially true at the busiest times when many people are trying to get to work.
In order to attract more visitors to the park, we must put more trains in service during peak hours.
There are also many tourists who do not speak French; therefore, we need train employees who speak English and other languages.
If we do this, I'm sure more visitors will come to Euro-Disney in comfort and safety.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

Employers should consider how to limit passive smoking at work.
There are various methods of preventing or limiting exposure to smoke.
Every workplace is different, and there is no universal solution.
Full discussion with employees is highly desirable for the smooth implementation of policies designed to limit exposure to tobacco smoke.
A policy is very much more likely to be accepted by all employees if they feel they have been properly consulted.
It is important to take time and make sure that details of restrictions on smoking are worked out and agreed on between management and employees.

Children who are old enough to understand the idea of schedules and chores can understand the needs of your home business.
Explain to your children that you do your work at home so that you can be near them when they need you.
But also be sure they understand that you must do your work so that you will have the money necessary to keep your house, feed the family, and provide them with money for entertainment.
Once your children understand the necessity of your work, then outline a work schedule and explain it to them.
Then make sure they understand that between hours x and y, you will be doing work, and then tell them to respect your schedule.

Jack arrived home from work one sunny afternoon.
He noticed a letter on the hall table.
He picked up the letter and opened it.
The letter began:
“Dear Jack, Congratulations! You have won an all-expenses-paid 5-day trip to Fiji!
Thank you for entering the competition at Franklin’s Supermarket at Downtown Shopping Center.”
He couldn't believe how lucky he was.
He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of champagne.
He sat back in the sofa and sipped on his glass of champagne.
Then he noticed the date of the trip―March 20th.
Jack screamed with horror.
“I can't believe it! I'm going to kill the mail carrier! They're always late!”
Today was March 21st.
Jack
Jack

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

It is a great honor for me to present a woman who I'm sure many of you have admired over the years.
She began her impressive work at Clark College.
There she majored in biology and graduated at the top of her class.
From there she went on to Adams Medical School, one of the finest medical research institutions in the nation,
where she first began to show an interest in genetic technology.
After graduating from Adams, again with honors, she continued to work in the field of genetics at the advanced think tank.
You will not find a finer research doctor anywhere in the world.
So, without any further delay, it is my pleasure to present Dr.
Brenda Walsh.

Our students are eating more and more junk food and drinks at school.
Vending machines are selling unhealthy drinks, and school cafeterias are serving unhealthy food.
Childhood obesity is becoming worse every day.
No one is really concerned about this serious phenomenon.
Schools are overlooking the problem, while food companies are only pursuing profits.
Strict regulations must be enforced immediately to ban junk foods from schools.
We cannot depend on schools or food companies any more.
It is no good relying on self-regulation: it didn't work in the past and there is no reason to believe it will work.
Now the government must act.

Reporter : Would you tell me about your childhood including school life?
Carry : I enjoyed making people laugh as a child.
My teacher made a deal with me that if I was good and did my work in the class she would give me five minutes at the end to perform.
I would finish my work fast and spend the rest of the class preparing my act.
Reporter : How did you make your debut?
Carry : I went to a comedy club at the age of sixteen.
I prepared my routine, and practiced it over and over until I was sure I had it perfect.
I was not successful on my first stage, though.
The owner of the comedy club was backstage shouting things like “It's too boring.”

Computers are helpful in many ways.
They work information much more quickly than a person can.
Accordingly, it is important to know something about computers.
There are a number of ways to learn.
Some companies have computer classes at work.
Also, most universities offer day and night courses in computer science.
Another way is to learn from a book.
Or you can learn from a friend.
After a few hours of practice, you too work with computers.

We probably all have discovered, at some time or another in our lives, the treasure hidden beneath a seeming misfortune, the silver lining behind the cloud, the blessing in disguise.

These studies indicated that great artists, writers, musicians, and scientists tend to have peaks of creativity every 7.6 months, followed by a low period.
Moreover, the studies propose that high points of creativity come in a longer seven-year pattern.

Possibly, we all have high points and low points in our creative cycles.
This may be the reason why we have "good days" or "bad days" at work, or do well or poorly on an exam.

To converse well, either with another person or with a crowd, it is vitally necessary to feel relaxed and comfortably at ease.

Many intelligent people have thought themselves slow and dull because they could not produce witty remarks in rapid succession as their companions seemed able to do.

At age 46, Jim Roswell is a self-made man.
Although he never graduated from college, Jim was recently promoted to vice president of operations of a manufacturing firm with annual sales of $80 million.
He is known around the firm as a take-charge, no-nonsense man who likes both adults and children.

"This has got to stop."

Workers in manufacturing jobs are likely to suffer serious health problems as a result of the noise, or the stress of being paced by mechanical requirements of the assembly line.
The amount of work involved, however, does not necessarily determine the level of stress.
Air traffic controllers, for instance, report that the long stretches of doing relatively little are at least as stressful as the times when they are handling many aircraft in the sky.

I often wonder if these same people yell at their doctors.
I'm willing to bet that they don't.
People tend to think of doctors as God-like creatures endowed with supernatural powers, while pharmacists are simply people who work in a drugstore.

I was running late and hollered after him, "Come back! I need a squeeze."
After he gave me a long, ardent embrace, I hated to tell him all I had wanted was some toothpaste!

A mother took her daughter to a great artist to have her portrait painted
and when the work was at length finished they went to see ti. The artist put it before
them and the mother looked at it, her face expressing displeasure, and said not one word.
Nor did the artist open his lips, and at last the girl, to break the uncomfortable
silence, said, "Where shall we hang it, Mother?" And the lady replied,"Just where
you like, my dear, so long as you hang it with the face to the wall."

The mood that thad taken possession of him was a thing known to men and unknown
