Q: I've heard many industrial parts are made by subcontractors in Korea. Is this correct?
A: That's right. Except for key components and parts, about 70p of the parts are made by subcontractors.
Q: I personally think that it would be more economical for your company to manufacture all the necessary parts at your own plants.
A: There are two reasons why we use subcontractors.
One is that we can get parts we need from subcontractors at a lower cost than from our own plants.
Secondly, we can save money by not having to keep the parts at the warehouse.

Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". It is quite natural since it has been coined by the Americans even if the word is now in vogue all over the world. Therefore the key of making America what it is now can be found in the trend of changing "why to do" into "how to do". Napoleon was that a fool to the question "why do you wage a war?" But he was an imperishable genius able to win so many by making standardization of the grooves of the screws which had been used in jointing and disjointing the cannons.

→ 민주주의 국가에서는: in a democracy
There arise[will]…at all times.
→ 공개토론을 통해서 해결될 수 없을 만큼 (큰 문제): so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion
→ 한 문제를 여러모로 의논할 수 있다: all sides of a problem을 주어로 삼은 수동문으로 풀어 쓸 수 있다.
Why don't you weigh the advantages of joining them against those of staying along?
ANS) In a democracy, there will be problems to be solved and changes to be made at all times. But there is no problem so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion all sides of a problem can be talked over, weighed carefully, and studied again and again. Then a final decision is reached by a vote of the majority.

S2 : Rocks-papers-scissors.
T : Anyone who wins is team "A." The others are team "B." Sounds good?

T : Then, play rocks-papers-scissors with your partner. Are you finished?
S1 : Yes.
T : Now listen carefully to what I am saying and guess the word. Do you understand?
S1 : Of course. I'm sure I'll know the answer.
T : Great! Today team "A" won the guessing game 4 to 1. Congratulations!

S2 : Maybe soon. Don't make it an issue.

S1 : You shouldn't talk in class. You might bother the person beside you.
S2 : I know that too. You don't have to remind me all the time.
S1 : The only reason I keep reminding you is that you keep
forgetting.
S2 : Don't worry! The person beside me is always sleeping
during class.
S1 : Why don't you wake him up?
S2 : If so, he gets mad.
S1 : Why does he get mad?
S2 : I don't know. You know how people can be grumpy if you wake them up when they are sleepy.

T : Why do you pick on him?
S : I don't pick on him. I just want to talk with him, but he doesn't listen.
T : There must be some reason why he doesn't want to.
S : I don't know what the reason is.
T : Anyway, stop teasing him and mind your own business.
S : I'll try.
T : Also, I want you two to separate.

S1 : How was your English exam?
S2 : I made a lot of mistakes.
S1 : Is that why you look depressed? Don't worry. Don't be so discouraged. Everything will be all right.
S2 : I prepared for my midterms. I did my best for this test.
But this is the result. I'm disappointed at myself.
S1 : Cheer up, Chul-su ! Pull yourself together. Be positive.
There are sunny days ahead. Don't worry about it. After the rain comes fair weather.
Forget it. You have another chance next time. You will get good grades.

T : What's wrong with S1? Why is he lying on his face?
S2 : He's not feeling well. He has caught a bad cold. He has been sick for two days.
T : Oh! That's too bad. You should be careful about your health, especially during the winter.
S1 : (Standing up) Mr. Shin, may I go to the infirmary to take medicine and rest for a while? I have a fever and a bad headache. I can't stand it any longer.
T : Of course you may go. And after school, you'd better go see a doctor.

S : I will be missing class today?
T : Why?
S : I'm going to see a doctor because I feel sick.
T : Do you have to go right now?
S : I have to leave early since the hospital is closing early today.
T : I see. What's your name?
S : I'm Min-su.
T : Which class?
S : Class 12. Have a good day, Mr. Shin.

S1 : Finally, I'm finished. I am so sleepy.
S2 : I am hungry. Let's go to the cafeteria.
S1 : What is the menu today?
S2 : Squid rice.
S1 : Yuck, I don't want to eat that. Besides my stomach feels funny today. I will go to the school store and eat some snacks.
S2 : Why don't you want squid rice?
S1 : I am allergic to seafood.
S2 : Then let's go together. I am going with you. My appetite is gone, too.
S1 : Lunch is on you since I paid last time.
S2 : Sure.

T : We haven't had English class for a long time!
S1 : That's right, we haven't! There were so many school events this month that we couldn't have class.
During this time, I forgot many English words.
T : Because of this, as of today, why don't we study harder? Where have we learned up to?
S2 : Ms. Kim, someone is outside the classroom!
T : Is that so? How come you are here?
M : I am here to see the homeroom teacher of 3-2.
T : That's me. Why did you come?
M : I am Tae-su's mother.
T : Are you? In fact, I've wanted to call you.
M : I should have come to see you earlier...

T : Class, we have a new student. Her name is Mi-ra from Seoul. Why don't you introduce yourself to your classmates?
S1 : Hi. I'm Mi-ra. I am from Seoul. I like basketball. I want to get along with everyone here.
T : Good. You can go now and sit next to Min-su.
S2 : Hi. I am Min-su. You look worried. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.
S1 : Thanks.
S3 : Hi, Mi-ra. You said you like basketball. Why don't you join our basketball club?
S1 : Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for asking.

Since politics is the business of everyone in a democracy, why should we regard it as an affront to be called a "politician"?

Why don't you say openly what is on your mind instead of insinuating such vile charges against me?

Albert Einstein is one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known.
If I had to express his character in a single word, I would choose the word 'simplicity.'
Perhaps a story about him will help.
Once, when he was caught in a heavy rain, he took off his hat and held it under his coat.
Asked why, he explained slowly that the rain would damage his hat, but not his hair.
Albert Einstein

When you attempt to do something and fail, you have to ask yourself why you have failed to do what you intended.
Answering this question in a new, unexpected way is the essential creative act.
It will improve your chances of succeeding next time.

Many superstitions concern black cats.
In ancient times, people believed that witches turned themselves into black cats.
So the animals are considered to be evil.
However, some cats were thought to bring good luck, especially to men who worked at sea.
That is why cats were often kept on ships to bring the voyage good luck.

People store different kinds of information in different parts of their brains.
One area saves only pictures of things that we see.
Another area remembers how those things are arranged.
The area that stores smells and sounds is very close to the area that stores feelings.
That's why you feel happy when you smell homemade bread or sad when you hear a love song.

It is said that Abraham Lincoln, when he was President of the U.S., was advised to include a certain man in his cabinet.
When he refused, Lincoln was asked why he would not accept the man.
"I don't like his face," the President replied.
"But the poor man isn't responsible for his face," responded his advocate.
"Every man over forty is responsible for his face," said Lincoln.

Another way of describing differences between people from diverse cultural backgrounds is comparing their communicative styles.
When people with different styles interact, they frequently feel ill-at-ease.
To help understand why that happens and to try to reduce the communications problems that arise when it happens,
it is helpful if foreigners know something about the communicative style of the local people.

As many factories started to be built and cities grew, there were more and more jobs in city areas.
As more people moved to cities for the jobs, they needed places to live in.
Soon houses gave way to apartment buildings.
Also, to provide goods and services for so many people, new businesses grew up in the cities.
These new businesses also needed space, and unused land was hard to find.
When most of the land was taken up, builders started to build in the only direction left―up! This is why skyscrapers were first built in the cities.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

My friends, I've known Mr. Jackson for years, and I think he is a fine man.
But he is too inexperienced to be mayor of our city.
You need a man of action with plans for the future.
That is why you should elect me as your next mayor.
I am sure you will make the right decision.
Thank you, ladies and gentleman.

In Europe, two cars roll off the same assembly line at the same factory.
The cars have identical features.
The only difference is the name.
One is called Koba; the other, Fasta.
Despite their similarities, the Fasta sells for over US$2,000 more than the Koba, and actual sales are double.
Do you know why? Because the Fasta brand was one European consumers had come to trust, they were willing to pay more.
A brand name instantly makes the product more recognizable and more desirable.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.
* probe 탐사선

You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about noseprints?
These are not for people.
These are for cows.
Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them.
Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle.
A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do.
No two cows have these wholly alike.
These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

The postal system became an avenue for bio-terrorism.
Often fatal viruses sent in letters resulted in the deaths of innocent people.
Such attacks are just one reason why we should seriously consider permanently shutting down the Postal Service and moving to a purely electronic mail system.
But there are other good reasons for shutting down our old-fashioned system of physically transporting person-to-person letters.
Specifically, continuing to move paper mail around is wastefully inefficient.
Eliminating what has clearly become an old delivery system would put a stop to the millions of dollars the post office loses every year.
We would also conserve precious natural resources, such as trees and water, and eliminate the pollution caused by the manufacture of paper.

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

New scientific research confirms that the prime time in life for learning a second language is from birth through age 10 or 12.
Newsweek calls it the “window of opportunity" for languages.
In Europe, kids commonly learn a second language at the same time as their first.
Why? Because it will never be as easy again.
The secret is to start early.
Now, the world famous British Broadcasting System brings Europe's long success with language learning to America.
The acclaimed BBS Language Course for Children uses the award-winning video character Muzy, compelling stories and delightful songs to bring language to life.
This could be the most important gift you ever give your child.

Notice that even though there are humans, animals, and buildings in this scene, there seems to be no background.
Because there is no perspective, figures and forms seem to be crammed together.
We get the feeling the figures can't get away from the horrors of war―they are trapped in their suffering.
Guernica is painted in blacks, whites, and grays.
Why do you think Picasso did this particular painting without bright colors?
Even though it was painted to protest and to commemorate the bombing of Guernica, a small village in Spain,
Picasso's painting shows the kind of suffering that takes place in any war.

Women live longer than men.
It is unfair, but true.
In developed countries, the average difference is five or six years.
In the poor world the gap is smaller, owing to the risks of childbirth.
But nowhere is it absent.
The question is, why?

Various jobs may require specialized skills such as proficiency in mathematics or business administration.
The single most valuable skill an individual can have, however, is probably the ability to avoid and resolve disagreement and argument.
This is because disharmony is the last thing an organization needs.
No organization succeeds when its members don't get along with one another.
We often see individuals with irritating or cruel personalities may be successful to a certain extent,
but they can eventually destroy the organization by driving away its most capable members.
That is why a smooth personality is worth far more than impressive academic training or technical ability.

One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

My coworker Lewis is an environmentalist.
He is up to date on every environmental cause.
He strictly separates his trash, he doesn't use chemicals on his lawn, and he drives a small car to save oil and reduce pollution.
Lewis is not afraid to lecture his peers when he sees them doing something that might harm our environment.
Today Lewis and I met at the copy machine.
I asked Lewis how his paper recycling drive was going.
“Well, you're not participating,” he said.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” I said.
“I should have joined you.”
Then I saw what he was copying: a handwritten note of about three sentences.
He had made dozens of copies.
Why didn't you make one copy, and then double it up? You could have saved a lot of paper,” I told him.
Lewis smiled weakly.
“Oh, you're right.
Normally I would have, but I'm late for a meeting.”

Many superstitions abound in Chinese culture about brooms.
The use of brooms should only be for cleaning the house, shop, etc.
Traditional Chinese culture holds that a broom is inhabited by a spirit, thus explaining why it should not be used for games, playing, etc.
The broom should not be used for cleaning the household gods or altar as this is disrespectful.
These objects are cleaned with a cloth or a special small brush.
During the Spring Festival, Chinese custom prohibits the use of the broom for three days from New Year's Day,
as it is thought that the use of it will sweep away good luck.

Would they walk into a store and pick up a newspaper without paying for it?
Why should a paper that is delivered be any different?

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment.
Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains?
This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game.
There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football.
There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people.
Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

Lately, it seems most of the apartment fires in my area have been caused by children playing with matches or lighters.
I don't understand why parents leave these things around where youngsters can get their hands on them.
This is gross negligence.
Kids will always be curious, but parents must do more than just tell them that fire is dangerous.

Of course, in any society, there are bound to be some negative attributes.
Parents should point out the negative factors prevailing in any society to warn their children, for children are not always able to recognize something bad.
But in doing so, parents should be careful not to focus on the negatives too much, which can wipe out the positives.
Why not have the approach "the cup is half full," with less emphasis on the "the cup is half empty."

Why are men so violent? Uncivilized behavior is easy to explain, but it's difficult to change.
It has more to do with how people react to fear and feelings of inadequacy than gender.
Violent behavior is a result of feeling powerless and impotent.
This applies to men and women of all ethnic groups, races and nations.

Motivational researchers try to answer the question "Why do the customers buy this product?"
This is a difficult question to answer because people sometimes don't tell the real reason why they buy something.
Sometimes they don't even know why they bought it.
Media researchers look for the answer to the question "Who is watching TV now?"
When the account manager can answer all these questions, he is ready for the next step.

If you ask most people to explain why they like someone when they first meet, they'll tell you it's because of the person's personality, intelligence, or sense of humor.
But they're probably wrong.
The characteristic that most impresses people when meeting for the first time is physical appearance.
Although it may seem unfair, attractive people are frequently preferred over less attractive ones.

Last night there was a long and detailed personal message on my machine from a teacher explaining why "David" had been transferred to her class.
There were some comments about his unacceptable behavior and a request that I call the school to discuss the problem.
The caller did not mention the name of the school and there was no number, so I was unable to let her know that she had reached the wrong person.
When that mother does not return the call, the teacher will assume she is not interested, which will be a black mark against her.

Often, a day at home at the first sign of a cold, a sore throat or the flu is all that's needed.
Why do so many people prefer to risk getting drop-dead sick rather than spend a day or two taking it easy?
Isn't that what sick leave is for?

Why are people so combative these days?
I'm a pharmacist who is amazed at how loud and unpleasant customers can be even though we are not at fault.
