Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". It is quite natural since it has been coined by the Americans even if the word is now in vogue all over the world. Therefore the key of making America what it is now can be found in the trend of changing "why to do" into "how to do". Napoleon was that a fool to the question "why do you wage a war?" But he was an imperishable genius able to win so many by making standardization of the grooves of the screws which had been used in jointing and disjointing the cannons.

S1 : What shall I do? That report is due today.
S2 : Why don't you ask the teacher to put off the deadline?
S1 : No way. This is not the first time. Did you do your homework?
S2 : Yes. But you haven't got time to copy my report.
S3 : Give it to me. I'll get it done for you.
S1 : Wow! You're a lifesaver.
S3 : Buy me something to eat later.

T : Class! Please be quiet! Stretch your arms and legs.
Good! Do you feel refreshed?
S1 : How refreshing!
T : Tae-su! What are you eating during class?
Shame on you!
S2 : Sorry, but it's because I'm very sleepy.
I'm chewing gum to stay awake.
T : I understand, but it's not a good strategy.
Why don't you go and wash your face.
S2 : Thank you for your advice.
T : I'm happy that you have a good attitude.

S1: What are you up to? Aren't you bored?
S2: Yeah, very bored.
S1: What's there to do?
S2: Nothing.
S1: Oh, yeah. Let's play soccer.
S2: We can't.
S1: Why not?
S2: Someone stole our ball.
S1: Really? Then let's turn some music on and read comic books.
S2 : Sounds like a good idea.

S1 : What game is it today?
T : A guessing game. First of all, let's make teams. Any good idea?
S2 : Rocks-papers-scissors.
T : Anyone who wins is team "A." The others are team "B." Sounds good?
S1 : Why not?
T : Then, play rocks-papers-scissors with your partner. Are you finished?
S1 : Yes.
T : Now listen carefully to what I am saying and guess the word. Do you understand?
S1 : Of course. I'm sure I'll know the answer.
T : Great! Today team "A" won the guessing game 4 to 1. Congratulations!

S1 : Why can't we grow our hair long at school?
I don't think there is difference between long and short hair.
S2 : I agree with you! I don't think long hair is bad.
S1 : When do you think our school is going to let us have any hair style we want?
S2 : Maybe soon. Don't make it an issue.
S1 : Why not?
S2 : Not every teacher and student agrees.
S1 : I think most students agree. Our opinion is just as important as the opinion of others.
S2 : You may be right.

S1 : Gosh! What a bore!
Do you understand Mr. Kim's class?
S2 : No, not at all!
S1 : Same here. (Yawning) Oh, I'm bored to death.
S2 : So am I.
S1 : I've got a complaint against him.
Why can't he explain the class more easily?
I can't figure out what's going on.

S1 : Let's go eat Labogi.
S2 : Well, I am broke.
S1 : Then it's on me. I didn't have breakfast.
S2 : I did, so I am not hungry.
S1 : Hey! I said I'd pay. Why do you have so many excuses? Just go with me.
S2 : Okay.
S1 : But you pay for the game room, since I am paying for the snacks.
S2 : Okay. I guess I will borrow money from my friends.

I do not entirely condone his misconduct, but I can understand, to a degree, why he behaved as he did.

I still do not understand why he had to express his artistic personality by defacing my living room walls with those horrible drawings.

We were chatting on the phone and at the end of the conversation,
my son said, "Mom, I'm going to shave my head."
I was shocked and asked him why he would want to do such a thing, for he has wonderful thick, blond, curly hair.
His answer was that he wouldn't have to bother brushing it and he'd save money on shampoo.
It did not make much sense to me.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about noseprints?
These are not for people.
These are for cows.
Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them.
Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle.
A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do.
No two cows have these wholly alike.
These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

Students in harambee schools are aware that they are not getting as good an education as those who attend more expensive schools.
Only two harambee students in 1,000 will attend a university.
Why then do so many students continue to flock to harambee schools?
They point out that if they did not go, they would have no chance at all of going to college.
They enthusiastically tell visitors, “Yes, the chances are slim, but I think that I can succeed.”

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

Why do you not go to Paris and study art? I always thought you had talent.

History is supposed to provide a knowledge of the longer context within which our lives take place.
History is not just the evolution of technology; it is the evolution of thought.
By understanding the reality of the people who came before us, we can see why we look at the world the way we do, and what our contribution is toward further progress.
We can pinpoint where we come in, so to speak, in the longer development of Civilization, and that gives us a sense of where we are going.

Between historical events and the historian there is a constant interplay.
The historian tries to impose on these events some kind of rational pattern: how they happened and even why they happened.
No historian starts with a blank mind as a jury is supposed to do.
He does not go to documents with a childlike innocence of mind and wait patiently until they dictate conclusions to him.
Quite the contrary.

Most of the actions of other people which give us annoyance spring from
causes that have nothing to do with the motives we assign to them.
Othello smothers Desdemona through a misunderstanding about a handkerchief
that five minutes' quiet talk would have cleared up, with disastrous
results to the villain, Iago. It is an excellent rule to distrust our
reading of facts, still more our reading of other people's motives in
relation to them. It is wrong in nine cases out of ten.
I can hardly recall a case in which my first conclusion as to why
So-and-So did this or that has not, on fuller knowledge, turned out
to be absurdly wide of the mark. How can it be otherwise?

A:I give up! I simply can't learn french.
B:Why do you say that? I think you are making a lot of progress.
A:No, I'm not. I try and try and I still can't speak it very well.
**
give up은 stop trying 또는 abandon의 뜻이다. I gave
up the test 혹은 I gave up taking the test로 말한다. try and try~는 I try
and
much progress로 쓰면 된다.
경우에는 make a lot of progress를 쓰면 된다.

A:Could you take a picture for me?
B:Sure, say [cheese]
A:May I take your picture ?
B:Oh,no,please don't! I look awful today.
A:Do you want me to take a picture of you?
B:Yes, thank you.Just push this button.
A:Would(Could) you be in a picture with me?
[=May I take a picture with you?]
B:Sure,why not.(좋지요.

Most people realize only a small part of their potential. They do not
make the progress which they would like to make and are finally capable
of making. Then, why do so many people fail to reach their potential or
fully realize it? They do so, simply because they have not clearly
defined what they want to achieve. I believe that success is a journey,
not a destination, It is the process of progressively realizing your
personal goals. So, I advise that you first set your goals clearly.

I'm a big, big girl in a big, big world
It's not a big, big thing if you leave me
But I do, do feel that I do, do will
Miss you much, miss you much

It's all so yellow and nice
It's so very cold outside

This used to be my playground
This used to be childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say
-
Don't look back
Keep your head held high
Don't ask then why
Because life is short
And before you know you're feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don't hold on to the past
Well that's too much to ask
-
** repeat
-
No regrets
But I wish that you were here with my
Well than there's hope yet
I can see your face in out secret place
You're not just a memory
Say good-bye to yesterday
Those are words I'll never say
-
This used to be my playground
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy
-
This used to be our playground
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
The best things in life are always free
Wishing you were here with me

End of the road
Boyz II man
We belong together and you know that I'm right
Why do you play with my heart
Why do you play with my mind
You said we'd be forever, said it's never die
How could you love me and leave me
And never say good bye
When I can't sleep at night
Without holding you tight
Girl, each time I try, I just break down and cry
Pain in my head, oh, I'd rather be dead
Spinning around and around
**
Although we've come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural
You belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural
You belong to me, I belong to you
-
Girl I know you really love me
You just don't realize
You've never been there before
It's only your first time
Maybe I'll forgive you, maybe you'll try
We shouldn't be happy together forever
You and I
Will you love me again like you loved me before
This time I want you to love me much more
This time instead just come to my bed
And baby don't let me down
-
** repeat
-
Girl I'm here for you
I'm not out to go out there and cheat all night
Just like you did baby, but that's all right
Huh, I love you anyway
And I'm still going to be here for you
Till my dying day, baby
Right now I'm just in so much pain, baby
'Cause you just won't come back to me, will you ?
Just come back to me
-
Yes, baby my heart is lonemy
My heart hurts baby
Yes, I feel pain, too
Baby please

Susan, an office worker, says, " I'll never get a raise, my boss doesn't value my work, so why should I work hard for nothing?"
She then tries to do just what is required for the job, makes no effort to show initiative, and refuses to work overtime.
Not surprisingly, her boss doesn't give her a raise at the end of the year.

"Bring those dishes out of the bedroom!
I told you not to smoke in the kitchen...
Stop spending money like water!
Act like an adult…….
Why do I have to tell you again and again……?"
The world is filled with this kind of noise.
It is called "nagging".
Parents nag children, wives nag husbands, teachers nag students, bosses nag employees, and even friends nag friends.

Nagging happens in every place where people gather.
It may happen in families, businesses, government offices, and so on.
Also, it has been in every culture around the world for a long time.
In the first family which lived in a cave, the husband might be nagged by his wife for not taking the garbage out of the cave.
Today some scholars are studying on what nagging really is and why we do it.

Current understanding of the interaction between different plates
explains why these occur where they do. For example, the edge of the
Pacific Ocean has been called the "Ring of Fire" because so many
volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen there. Before the 1960's,
geologists could not explain why active volcanoes and strong earthquakes
were concentrated in that region. The theory of plate tectonics gave
them an answer.
of Fire" 라고 불렸다.

Learning is connected to instruction and direction, and boys get more of
that than girls do all through school. Why? Partly because teachers tend
to ques- tion the students who they expect will have the answer. Since
girls traditionally
don't do so well as boys in such “masculine” subjects as math and
science, they're called on least in those classes. But girls are called
on most in verbal and reading classes, where boys are expected to have
the trouble. The trouble is in our culture, not in our chromosome. In
Germany, everything academic is considered masculine, most teachers are
men, and girls have the reading problems.

Student : Why do animals migrate in late fall?
Teacher : Before I answer why these animals travel to other parts of the world for warmer weather, let's look into some of the discoveries that scientists have made.
We start not with an animal but with another living thing, a growing seed.
Student: Then do seeds learn certain behaviors as they grow?
Teacher : We are sure that a plant does not learn behavior.
Instead, these behaviors are part of a plant from the very beginning of its life.
In other words, a plant's behavior is inborn.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota has a much larger variation in temperature between January and July than the coastal cities of Portland, Maine.
The main reason is that water has a much larger heat capacity than land.
In other words, water temperature changes very slowly compared to soil temperature.
This is why coastal cities do not warm up as fast as cities in the Plains during spring and summer and why they do not cool down as fast during fall and winter.
If it were not for the oceans, coastal cities would have much colder winters and much warmer summers.

Try to imagine this. The phone bill arrives, but you don't pay it right away.
Why not?
Because you're a kook!
Instead you wait until they send you a notice.
I could do that.

Okay, uh, you let me go grocery shopping, and I buy laundry detergent, but it's not the one with the easy-pour spout.
Why would someone do that?! ...One might wonder.

Why are we standing here?
We're waiting for you to open the door. You got the keys.
No I don't.
나?
Yes, you do. When we left, you said, "got the keys."
No I didn't. I asked, "got the ke-eys?"
No, no, no, you said, "got the keys".
Do either of you have the keys?
The oven is on.
/ Oh, I gotta get my ticket!
Wait, wait, we have a copy of your key.
Well then get it, get it!
That tone will not make me go any faster.
Joey!
/ That one will.

Ok, so it's just because it was my table, I have to buy a new one?
That's the rule.
What rule? There's no rule, if anything, you owe me a table!
How'd you get to that?
Well, I believe the piece of furniture was fine until your little breakfast adventure with Angela Delvecchio
You knew about that?
Well, let's just say the impressions you made in the butter left little to the imagination.
Ok, ok, How about if we split it?
What do you mean, like, buy it together?
Yeah
You think we're ready for something like that?
Why not?

I know, I mean, why can't parents just stay parents?
(She walks over near Chandler and his gaze stays very obviously on her chest) Why do they have to become people? Why do they have (Notices Chandler) Why can't you stop staring at my breasts?
What?
(Looks up) What?
Did you not get a good enough look the other day?
Alright, alright.
We're all adults here, there's only one way to resolve this. Since you saw her boobies, I think, uh, you're gonna have to show her your peepee.
Y'know, I don't see that happening?
C'mon, he's right. Tit for tat.
Well I'm not showing you my 'tat.'

You think it would be okay if I asked out your sister?
Why?
Why would you wanna do that? Why?
So that if we went out on a date, she'd be there.
Well, I mean, I'm not my sister's, you know, whatever, and um

Do you have a sec?
Ah, sure, Nina. What's up?
I don't know.
For the past couple days, people have been avoiding
me and giving me these really strange looks.
Oh, well, ah maybe that's because they're ah... jealous, of us.
Maybe.
But that doesn't explain why they keep taking my scissors.
Ah, well, maybe that's, ah, because you're getting a big raise.
I am?
Sure, why not?

Why, how much is this gonna cost?
I have no idea, but X-rays alone could be a couple hundred dollars.
Wel-wel-well what are we gonna do?
이런...
Well there's not much we can do.
Um... unless, unless I use yours.

ah, what're you doing here?
I've been trying to call you.
Listen, um...
No, no, no, don't say "listen." I know that "listen."
I've said that "listen."
I'm sorry.
I don't get it.
What happened?
What about everything you said under the bridge?
Yeah, um...
그건...
I was talkin' crazy that night, I was so drunk!
You don't drink.
That's right, I don't ..
But I was, I was drunk on you!
Okay, yeah, so it's not gonna work.
Why?
Is it because I'm friends with Phoebe?
If it was, would you stop hanging out with her?
No. No, I, I couldn't do that.
Um, then yes, it's 'cause of Phoebe!
So, you know, it's either her or me.
Then, uh, then I'm sorry.
You know...
You're gonna be really, really hard to get over.
I know...
