With the inauguration of the Erie Canal in 1825, the Hudson River became on
of the busiest waterways in the United States. For over fifty years, the Hudson
was crowded end to end with cargo schooners, luxury paddle-wheelers, and a vast
armada of tugboats and barges carrying freight and passengers. But as the turn
of the century approached, river traffic began to decline. First the
cargo-carrying ships disappeared. Then railroads began to replace the
steamboats. Finally, by 1900, tugboats and barges were almost the only
watercraft left.

wheeler-dealer는 미국의 속어로 거래나 정치에서 눈부시게 활약하여
서 수완을 펴는 사람을 이야기합니다. 이 말은 본래 도박장에서 그 기
원을 찾을수 있습니다. wheeler라는 것은 커다란 바퀴 위에 주사위를
던져서 승패를 좌우하는 게임에서 바퀴를 돌리는 사람을 wheeler 라고
이야기 합니다. dealer는 카드 놀이를 할 때 카드를 나누어 주는 사람
을 dealer라고 하지요. 그래서 도박장에서 wheeler와 dealer는 게임에
천재적인 흐름을 이끄는데 그래서 이런것에서 연유가 되어서 사업계나
정치계에서 굉장히 활약하는, 전체적인 흐름을 이끄는 수완가 같은 사
람을 wheeler-dealer라고 이야기를 하는 것이지요. 그리고 wheeler 와
dealer가 함께 쓰이게 된 것은 이 두 단어의 line (운율)이 맞아 떨어
지기 때문에 합쳐지게 된 것이지요.
