Let's talk about sports.
Let's think of something nice to talk about.
Let me tell you something.
Could I have a word with you?
Guess what?
I've been meaning to ask you.
This is between you and me.

[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

Thank you for your business.
I want your business(with us)라고 하면 '난 당신과 거래를 하고
쓸데없이 남의 일에 참견하는 사람을 보고 keep out of this.
This is none of your business.
No admittance except on business
have no business to∼와 같은 형식으로 쓰인다.
You have no business to tell me what to do with my money
When I say I will do it, I mean business라 하면

And now when we fought you had an eye of a tiger,
man... the edge.
Now you got to get it back.
and the way you get it back... is to go back to
the beginning. You know what I mean?
Ha, ha... maybe we can win it back together.
Eye of the tiger, man.

If you say that someone or something is in limbo, you mean that they
are in a situation where they seem to be caught between two
stages and it is unclear what will happen next.
ex) The negotiations have been in limbo since mid-December.

Critics liken Paul Andreu's building to an egg,
a notion he says does not bother him.
It is a simple thing.
It's a very simple layer, with inside many, many things, free theatres, exhibition facilities and this and that.

I mean, it's quite a complex inside something simple.

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
“Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

Once while hearing a young lady highly praised for her beauty, I asked:
What kind of beauty do you mean?
Merely that of the body, or also that of the mind?
Many a pretty girl is like a flower which is admired for its beautiful appearance, but despised for its unpleasant odor.
It is far better to acquire beauty than to be born with it.

It is important to understand what Americans mean when they say that they believe in equality of opportunity.
They do not mean that everyone is―or should be―equal.
Moreover, they do mean that each individual should have an equal chance for success.

When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get a good score on a certain test, or even the ability to do well in school; these are at best only indicators of something larger, deeper, and far more important.
By intelligence we mean a style of life, a way of behaving in various situations, and particularly in new, strange, and perplexing situations.
The true test of intelligence is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do.

Whenever someone speaks with prejudice against a group―Catholics, Jews,
Italians, Negroes―someone else usually comes up with a classic line of
defence: "Look at Einstein!" "Look at Carver!" "Look at Toscanini!"
They mean well, these defenders. But their approach is wrong. It is even
bad. What a minority group wants is not the right to have geniuses among
them but the right to have fools and scoundrels without being condemned
as a group.

Mrs. Maul thought that $4 was a very reasonable price for a thoroughbred
police dog, so she clipped out the ad in the suburban newspaper that
proclaimed this extraordinary bargain, wrote out a check, and ordered
the dog to be shipped to her residence.
A few days later the expressman deposited on her doorstep the
meanest-looking mongrel she had ever seen.
In a rage she telephoned the man who had inserted the ad, and said,
"What do you mean by calling that mutt a thoroughbred police dog?"
"He is just that," was the solemn reply.
"Don't be deceived by his looks. He's in the Secret Service. And he
is disguised as a mongrel."

A:Guess what! Gapdol and Juliet are getting married.
B:Really! It's an international marriage. When did they decide that?
*
Guess what!은 I have something important to tell you의 뜻으로 [알아맞춰
는 Is it true?나 Do you mean it?
는 Oh, that's interesting!
When did they decide
that?은 When did they decide that they would get married?
표현으로서 When did that happen?

It is so easy to be reactive! You get caught up in the moment. You say
things you don't mean. You do things you regret later. And you think,
"Oh, if only I had stopped to think about it, I would never have reacted
that way!" Clearly, our lives would be better if we acted based on our
deepest values instead of reacting to the feelings of the moment. What we
all need is a 'pause button' - something that enables us to stop between
what happens to us and our response to it.

Take a bow
The night is over
This masquerade is getting older
Lights are low
The curtains are down
There's no one here there's no one here

There's no one in the crowd

But do you feel them
Do you mean what you say when there's no one around

Say good-bye, say good-bye

Work and play here take on a different meaning, and become equivalent to servitude and freedom.
The change consists in the subjective point of view from which the distinction is now made.
We no longer mean by work all that is done usefully, but only what is done unwillingly and by the spur of necessity.
By play we are designating, no longer what is done fruitlessly, but whatever is done spontaneously and for its own sake, whether it have or not an ulterior utility.
Play, in this sense, may be our most useful occupation.
So far would a gradual adaptation to the environment be from making this play obsolete, that it would tend to abolish work, and to make play universal.
For with the elimination of all the conflicts and errors of instinct, the race would do spontaneously whatever conduced to its welfare and we should live safely and prosperously without external stimulus or restraint.

A great lover of the British Empire has said that under the British constitution even a successful rebellion is perfectly constitutional and he quotes historical instances, which I cannot deny, in support of his claim.
I do not claim any constitutionality for a rebellion successful or otherwise, so long as that rebellion means in the ordinary sense of the term, what it does mean, namely, wresting justice by violent means.
On the contrary, I have said it repeatedly to my countrymen that violence, whatever end it may serve in Europe, will never serve us in India.

Before we delve into the latest research, let's define a few terms.
Though we all have our own intuitive sense of what the words stress and fear mean, scientists use these words in very specific ways.
For them, stress is an external stimulus that signals danger, often by causing pain.
Fear is the short-term response such stresses produce in men, women or lab rats.
Anxiety has a lot of the same symptoms as fear, but it's a feeling that lingers long after the stress has lifted and the threat has passed.

A: Hello, darling. How are you?
B: Terrible, Mum. My back is killing me, the children are behaving
badly, the house is so untidy―and I'm expecting six guests for dinner.
A: Don't worry, darling. I'm coming right over to help you.
B: You're an angel! How's Dad?
A: Dad? ...... Sweetheart, you know Dad died nine years ago.
B: What number are you calling?.
A: 707-5869.
B: This is 707-5868.
A: Oh no, I dialed the wrong number.
B: Hold on, please. Does this mean you are not coming over?
A: 여보세요, 얘야.
A: 707-5869.

Watching the talk show, you remember seeing the grocery basket of the obese people at the store.
Who is responsible for their overweight?
What makes them overweight?
They themselves!
By eating unhealthy food they gain weight as a side effect.
A long time ago, being overweight used to mean being rich, having a lot to eat.
Ironically, many Americans get fat for themselves and cry on the talk shows.
Today, it's the symbol of an unhealthy, unbalanced life.

So I have a flaw! Big deal! Like Joey's constant knuckle-cracking isn't annoying? And Ross, with his over-pronouncing every single word? And Monica, with that snort when she laughs? I mean, what the hell is that thing?

Lose the other guys.
...Like, ...all of them?
...... 전부....다?
C'mon, we're great together, why not?
Why can't we just have what we have now? Why can't we just talk, and laugh, and make love, without feeling obligated to one another...
and up until tonight I thought that's what you wanted too.
...Well, y'know, part of me wants that, but it's like I'm two guys, y'know? I mean, one guy's going 'Shut up! This is great!'
But there's this other guy. Actually it's the same guy that wells up every time that Grinch's heart grows three sizes and breaks that measuring device...
So... which one of the two guys will you listen to?
I don't know, I-I have to listen to both of them, they don't exactly let each other finish...

Do you know what it's like to grow up with someone who is critical of every single thing you say?
...I can imagine.
I'm telling you, it's a wonder your mother turned out to be the positive, life-affirming person that she is.
That is a wonder. So tell me something, Mom.
If you had to do it all over again, I mean, if she was here right now, would you tell her?
Tell her what?
How she drove you crazy, picking on every little detail, like your hair... for example.
I'm not sure I know what you're getting at.
Do you think things would have been better if you'd just told her the truth?
...No.
I think some things are better left unsaid. I think it's nicer when people just get along.

Anyway, I was just thinking, I mean, if you'd gone to Vail, and if you guys'd been with your family, if you didn't have syphilis and stuff,
we wouldn't be all together, you know? So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm very thankful that all of your Thanksgivings sucked.
That's so sweet.
And hey, here's to a lousy Christmas.
/ And a crappy New Year.

Guys? There's a somebody I'd like you to meet.
W-wait. What is that?
'That' would be Marcel. You wanna say hi?
No, no, I don't.
Oh, he is precious! Where did you get him?
My friend Bethel rescued him from some lab.
That is so cruel! Why? Why would a parent name their child Bethel?
Hey, that monkey's got a Ross on its ass!
Ross, is he gonna live with you, like, in your apartment?
Yeah. I mean, it's been kinda quiet since Carol left, so...
Why don't you just get a roommate?
Nah, I dunno... I think you reach a certain age, having a roommate is kinda pathe-
....sorry, that's, that's 'pathet', which is Sanskrit for 'really cool way to live'.
So you guys, I'm doing all new material tonight. I have twelve new songs about my mother's suicide, and one about a snowman.
Might wanna open with the snowman.

You mean that?
Yeah, why not. So I told her.
Yeah? How'd it go?
Awful. Awful. Couldn'ta gone worse.
Well, howdya feel?
Pretty good! I told her.
Well, see? So, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea, y'know, me kissing your mom, uh? Huh? But.. we don't have to go down that road.
Okay. Now this is just the first chapter, and I want your absolute honest opinion. Oh, oh, and on page two, he's not 'reaching for her heaving beasts'.
What's a 'niffle'?
You usually find them on the 'heaving beasts'.
Alright, alright, so I'm not a great typist...
Wait, did you get to the part about his 'huge throbbing pens'? Tell ya, you don't wanna be around when he starts writing with those!

C'mon up.
Oh, good. Rog is here.
What's the matter with Rog?
Oh, it's nothing, it's a little thing I hate that guy.
What, so he was a little analytical.
That's what he does, y'know?
C'mon, he's not that bad.
Y'see, that's where you're wrong.
Why would I marry her if I thought on any level thatthat she was a lesbian?
I dunno.
Maybe you wanted your marriage to fail.
Why? Why would I why? Why? Why? Why?
I don't know.
Maybe maybe low self-esteem, maybe maybe to compensate for overshadowing a sibling, maybe you
Wait-wait, go back to that sibling thing.
Well, I don't know.
I mean, it's conceivable that you wanted to sabotage your marriage so that the sibling would feel less of a failure in the eyes of the parents.

For God's sake, Joey, really. (She gives the sofabed a tiny push and it folds away)
Hold on, you-you knew?
Of course I knew!
What did you think?
Your father is no James Bond.
You should've heard some of his cover stories. "I'm sleeping over at my accountant's," I mean, what is that? Please!
So then how could you I mean, how could you?!
Do you remember how your father used to be?
Always yelling, always yelling nothing made him happy, nothing made him happy, not that wood shop, not those stupid little ships in the bottle, nothing.
Now he's happy!
I mean, it's nice, he has a hobby.
Ma, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but what the hell are you talking about?!
I mean, what about you?
Me?
I'm fine.

How's it going?
Oh, okay, except I broke up with Roger.
What happened?
I don't know, I mean, he's a good person, and he can be really sweet, and in some ways I think he is so right for me, it's just I hate that guy!

Um, Pheebs, so, you guys just don't get along?
It's mostly just dumb sister stuff, you know,
I mean, like, everyone always thought of her as the pretty one, you know
Oh, oh, she was the first one to
start walking, even though I did it
But, to my parents, by then it
was like "yeah, right, well what else is new?"

I mean, that's what this is all about, right?

Well, now, how come you guys have never played poker with us?
Yeah, what is that? Like, some kind of guy thing? Like, some kind of sexist guy thing?
Like it's poker, so only guys can play?
No, women are welcome to play.
Oh, OK, so then what is it? Some kind of... you know, like, like... some kind of, y'know, like... alright, what is it?
There just don't happen to be any women in our games.
Yeah, we just don't happen to know any women that know how to play poker.
Oh, please, that is such a lame excuse!
I mean, that's a typical guy response.

Where were we?
Oh, OK... five card draw,
uh... jacks or better... nothing wild, everybody ante.
Look, Rachel, we don't have to do this.
Yes, we do.
Alright, check.
Check.
나도
I'm in for fifty cents.
Call.

I'm in.
I see your fifty cents... and I raise you...
five dollars.
I thought, uh... it was a fifty cent limit.
Well, I just lost a job, and I'd like to raise the bet five bucks. Does anybody have a problem with that?
- Not at all
Loser?
No, I fold.
What do you mean, you fold? Hey, come on! What is this? I thought that 'once the cards were dealt, I'm not a nice guy.'
I mean, what, were you just full of it?
I'm in.
받아
How many you want?
One.
한 장
Dealer takes two.
- What do you bet?
- I bet two dollars.
OK... see your two...
and I raise you twenty.
I see your twenty,
raise you twenty-five.
See your twenty-five...and...uh,
Monica, get my purse.
Rachel, there's nothing in it.
OK, then get me your purse.
OK, here you go. Good luck.
Thank you. I saw your twenty-five, and I raise you...
seven.
7!
...teen!
17!
Joey, I'm a little shy.
That's OK, Ross, you can ask me. What?
What do you need, what do you need?
Fifteen.
15
- Alright, here's ten.
- Here, I got five, I got five.
- Thank you.
- Good luck.
OK, I am calling your seventeen. What do you got?
Full house.
You got me.
- Ahhh, that's alright. Y'know, that's a tough hand to beat.
- I thought we had them!

Solicitation, controlled substances,
driving under the influence...
You've got quite a long list of hobbies.
What is it you want?
Your absolute, unquestioning loyalty.
Always.
Do not misunderstand what I mean by loyalty.
Anything. Name it, Frank.

- What's that?
- What's what?
Is that a hickey?
Are you whoring around again?
- No. I have a girlfriend. .
- Mm. You mean your little office romance.
What do you know about that?

Come on in.
들어와
$10,000.
What will that get me?
I mean, I'm kinky, but I don't know if I'm the girl you're looking for.
You're definitely the girl that I'm looking for.
Excuse me.
All I want for that money is your silence.
My what?
The guy you were with the other night,
the one who was arrested, do you know who he was?
You mean the congressman?
There was no congressman. There was no arrest.
None of that exists. All that exists
is the money sitting right there in front of you.
Do you understand?
Yeah.

Good.
좋아

Doug, this is a man who built his fortune from nothing.
The money doesn't mean anything to him. It's what it represents.
Which is what?
His life's work.
Get Remy Danton on the phone. Set up a meeting as quickly as you can.

I told him I was relieved, that we could've taken action if he didn't comply.
You think he's fishing, to see what our next move might be?
I think so, sir. I mean, he is lying about those two plants in the South.

But we can't guess. We have to be certain.

Jack, I'm starting to worry. Can't you get over here?
Not right now. I don't have time to explain, but some very bad things are happening.
Our daughter is missing. That's pretty bad.
Teri, she's not missing. She's partying. Kim's smart enough to know her limits.
Oh, yeah? Well, maybe you should come over here and see what those limits are, Jack.
- What's that supposed to mean? - Nothing.

Listen, we're OK and I'm really sorry I did this. I mean it.
I'll be home as soon as I can get a ride.
You're not waiting for a ride. We'll come pick you up. Where are you?
- I don't even know how we got here.
Kim, honey, this is not the night you wanna shine me on, I promise you.
- I gotta go.
Mom, I love you.
''I love you.''
Nice touch. ln the van.
- What happened? - I can't believe it.
She's at this party, she said she was sorry and she'd be back.
- What about Janet? - She's fine.
What's wrong?
She said ''I love you''.
She n"라고 했어요 그

Keep working. Has Division responded to the two dead agents yet?
Yeah, they're picking them up now.
Good.
좋아
Anyone we know?
Someone we know.
I'm afraid it was Richard Walsh.
I'm sorry, Jamey, I know what he meant to you.
What is going on? Is this anything to do with Palmer?
That's what we gotta find out. Look, I don't have time to go into all the details,
but I've got to put you in a difficult position. You're the only person I can trust.
What do you mean?
Walsh said we've got a problem on the inside. He told me to talk only to you.

Is this right?
They just posted a memorandum.
Richard Walsh is dead.
That can't be. I mean, he was just here an hour ago.
That's what it says.
Oh, my God.
세상에
Can you find out what happened?
Jack's got me working on something.
Can you open up a socket on the terminal? I'll check it myself.
Sure.
알았어

- Kim's friend, Janet. Let me speak to her. - She's in surgery.
Surgery? Is she gonna make it?
- I don't know.
- Listen to me, Teri. What I'm trying to do right now is to find Kim.
Stay where you are, and I will get there as soon as I can.
What do you mean? I've been trying to find Kim. I've been out all night trying to find Kim.
Teri, I'm gonna explain it to you later, OK? You're gonna have to trust me.
Teri? Honey, I love you.
I promise you, we're gonna get through this, OK?
I love you too, Jack.
I'll get back to you as soon as I know anything.

Hey, it's me. Is Janet out of surgery yet?
Yeah. The police showed up. We're talking to them now.
- Anything new?
- No. How about you?
I'm at the Van Nuys police station. Someone here knows where the girls were tonight.
- You mean one of the police officers?
- No. They picked him up in North Hollywood.
- I think he saw Kim.
- Who?
- I don't know. A man.
- Well, what did he say?
I'm waiting to talk to him. You've gotta talk to Janet as soon as she gets out of surgery, OK?
I know. I know, I know.
I'll call you as soon as I can. I gotta go. Bye.

can't handle.
Taped to the back of the phone is a set of keys with a remote.
- Got 'em.
- It's for a parked car on Avenue 26.
Nevada plates, 782NOF. Find it with the remote.
There's a body in the trunk. Get rid ofit.
- What does he mean, body?
- I don't know.
- Whose body is in the trunk?
Walk in front of me.
Come on.
어서

- Hello? - Hey, it's me.
- Jack, where are you? - I'm still in the West Side.
- You said you were coming here. - I'll be there soon. Is Janet out of surgery?
There's been a complication. They're working on it now.
Listen. Do not let anyone near Janet who doesn't belong there.
- What do you mean? - I think she might be in danger.
- From whom? - I'll explain later.
- Until then do not mention this to anyone. - OK.
- I'll be there soon. - OK.

- We gotta get outta here.
- What do you mean ''we''?
I don't know how you hooked up with these guys, but they don't trust you.
You just saw Gaines kill your friend.
- He's not gonna let you walk away.
- Shut up.
The only way either of us is gonna stay alive is...
I said shut up!

What did you mean before about her being in danger? Danger from whom?
Someone who doesn't want her talking to me.
You must be Jack.
Alan, yeah. This is my husband Jack.
Alan's been a great friend tonight, Jack.
- I'm glad your daughter's OK.
- Thank you. Thank you very much.

And what if some judge rules it was? I mean, how do we justify the cover-up?
All of them - Sherry, Keith... Nicole - kept this from the police.
I don't wanna seem crass, but the important thing is, you didn't cover it up.
You didn't know.
What does that say about me?
Not knowing the most important things about my family.
I'm not saying it's not a hard sell.
The election is still six months away.
The voters know how to forgive.
You just have to know how to ask for it.

- This is Jack Bauer. Leave a message. - Jack, where are you?
- Oh, God! - Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.
- Where's Jack? - He went to take a call.
- I need to talk to him. - Why? What did Janet say?
- They were trying to escape. - From whom?
A couple of boys who got too aggressive.
- She doesn't know if Kim got away. - Kim would have called.
Janet says they were being held in a house up in Bel Air.
- That's the address? - We should give it to the police.
Jack is the police.

What if Maureen could be persuaded not to come forward with the story?
I already spoke to her. There's no way.
There's always a way.
