topsy-turvy: 뒤죽박죽(not organized, messy)
ex) I can never find anything in this room. Everything is so topsy-turvy.
- shilly-shally: 망설이다
→ Shall I? Shall I?에서 Shall he? Shall he?
- dillydally: 꾸물거리다, 빈둥거리다(to hesitate, to waste time by moving slowly)
ex) If Miss Lee plans to come with us, we'd better get to her house an hour early. She always dillydallies when she's getting ready.
Nil I?
- fuddy-duddy: 변함이 없는 사람(someone who doesn't like change)
ex) Mr. Lee never goes anywhere new, always wears a tie, eats the same food every day, and is in bed by nine o'clock. He's a real fuddy-duddy.
- hush-hush: 비밀스러운(secret)
ex) She works for the government, but nobody knows exactly what she does. Her job is very hush-hush.

ex) Have you tried to read and understand all that mumbo jumbo in the insurance policy?

British novels; English novels
2) 200페이지 정도의: with about 200 pages
3) 출판사: a publisher
Do you know any English-Korean dictionary fit for beginners?
This is a suitable novel for you to read during the vacation.
I want a moderately priced camera.
By the way [or Incidentally], may I have your name?
ANS 1) I would like to read an English novel in the original. What book will you recommend? Could you let me know a suitable one with about 200 pages for me to read which is not too difficult? Incidentally, I also want you to tell me the name of the publisher and the price of the book.
ANS 2) I want to read some British novels in English. What kind of books do you think are good for me? Will you please tell me not-so-difficult ones with about 200 pages? I hope you will tell me the name of the publishers and the prices of them, too.

→「괜찮으시면」if you (can) allow it로 옮기지 않는다.
→「~하고 싶다」는 I'd like to부정사 (=would like to부정사)
→「잠시 동안」for a while/ for some time/ for a bit
→「괜찮으시면」은 경우에 따라서는 영작하지 않아도 된다. ex) What do you say to going to Pusan next Sunday?
(ANS) I'd like to be left alone for a while, if you don't mind.

→ Would you like to 부정사~? How about ~ing?/ What do you say to ~ing?
→「주말에」 at the weekend/ this weekend 「저녁 식사」 supper
→ Have supper나 come to dinner의 경우 관사를 붙이지 않는다. That was a delicious supper (Go to [school]과 visit [the school]의 관사의 유무도 위와 마찬가지이다.)
(ANS) Would you like to have supper with us at the weekend?

[比較] suppose, guess, imagine, assume, infer
I am able to suppose how upset you are just from the expression in your eyes.(당신 눈빛만 보고도 당신이 얼마나 당황하고 있는지 짐작할 수 있네.)/ Can you guess how old I am?
He imagines that people don't like him.
He had imagined that he had heard a scraping noise.
assume 역시 take as a fact or as true without proof라는 뜻인데, suppose보다는 formal style에서 쓰인다.
Assuming it rains tomorrow, what shall we do?

[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

Suit yourself.
It's up to you.
You may do what you like with your own.

Should I give you more coffee? (X)
(How about ~?, Would you like ~?, Would you care for ~?)'
① Would you like more coffee?(커피 더 드시겠어요?)
② Would you care for another cup of coffee?(커피 한 잔 더 하실래요?)
What do you say to one more cup of coffee?(커피 한 잔 더 하시는 건 어때요?)
④ How about another cup of coffee?(커피 한 잔 더 드릴까요?)

S2: It's not mine. Whew, I'm relieved!
T: What do you think about using cell phones in public?
S1: We should put them on vibration. All these cell phones and beepers seem like pollution.
S2: I don't agree. I think cell phones are useful.
We can use them whenever we want.
T: That's enough. Let's move on.
Please pay attention during class.
Now shall we start today's lesson?

S1: What are you up to? Aren't you bored?
S2: Yeah, very bored.
S1: What's there to do?
S2: Nothing.
S1: Oh, yeah. Let's play soccer.
S2: We can't.
S1: Why not?
S2: Someone stole our ball.
S1: Really? Then let's turn some music on and read comic books.
S2 : Sounds like a good idea.

T : This time you'll take the test after a short activity.
Pass these to the back.
S1 : It seems like there aren't enough for everybody.
Do some students have to share?
T : Two students share one handout then. Have you all received a handout?
S1 : There aren't enough copies.
S2 : Could I have another copy? I spilt milk on it.
T : Okay. (after ten minutes) It's time for an "exciting" test. Take one and pass the rest on.
S1 : How many points will you give for every correct answer and what's the passing grade?
T : Five points for every correct answer and you have to get at least 80 to pass.

S1 : The teacher is upset about your paper.
He is disappointed with your work.
S2 : What's wrong with it?
S1 : Let me have a look at it.
Your paper was poorly written.
S2 : Tell me where I made mistakes.
S1 : Spend more time checking your spelling and grammar.
S2 : Thanks. I promise to do my best to write the way you'd like.

S1 : I am so tired from sleeping late last night.
S2 : What did you do?
S1 : I was out with Mi-ra. I got yelled at by my parents
for coming home so late.
S2 : Are things going well between you two?
S1 : Not really. We had a little argument.
S2 : That's too bad.
S1 : Oh, never mind. Let's change the subject.
S2 : Look there is a vending machine over there.
What would you like?
S1 : A coke sounds good.
S2 : Here you are.
S1 : Thanks. Glad to have you as my friend.

If you recognize your friend Jack feels depressed, what should you do?
First talk to him about it.
Try to discover what he is feeling.
If you can't persuade him to discuss the problem,
try an approach like "you remind me of the time when I was depressed."
This may keep him from feeling lonely.
Then, provide emotional support.
Please don't forget to listen sympathetically, point out the realities of the situations and always offer hope.

It's great that you're thinking about your future.
You have a lot of time before you need to decide on a career, though.
And there are ways to prepare for whatever you will do.
You can spend time finding and doing the things that you really like.
It will help you figure out what you most enjoy doing.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

When Amelia, one of my dearest friends, was ninety-nine, I, not knowing if she would live to be one hundred,
decided to ask the “big” question that is usually reserved for people who reach the age of one hundred.
I asked, “To what do you attribute your longevity?”
The usual answers we hear to that question are, “I didn't drink,” “I minded my own business,” and the like.
I had no idea what this healthy little ninety-nine-year-old would say.
What she said was profound.
It caused me to sit up and take notice: I have learned how not to be afraid.
Wow! What a statement! I realized―yes, this woman is fearless!
She didn't hide away at home and kept on moving out into the world despite the risks.

The minute I sat down with the unemployment counselor, she asked, "What did you do that caused you to lose your job?"
These so-called "counselors" should be informed that sometimes people are laid off for no reason other than that the economy is bad and business is slow.
Also, they should try to be considerate of our feelings.
Unemployed people are simply out of work, so please don't treat us like criminals.

Once while hearing a young lady highly praised for her beauty, I asked:
What kind of beauty do you mean?
Merely that of the body, or also that of the mind?
Many a pretty girl is like a flower which is admired for its beautiful appearance, but despised for its unpleasant odor.
It is far better to acquire beauty than to be born with it.

Today the environmental damage that economic growth is causing forms a natural limit to business.
We can't go on like we have, because if we do, the environment will literally fall apart.
Many of the fish in the ocean are already so polluted we can't eat them.
Cancer rates are increasing exponentially.
Even the AMA says that pregnant women and children should not eat commercial vegetables because of the pesticide residue.
If this keeps up, can you imagine what kind of world we'll be leaving our children?

A: Have you seen the new guy they hired as coach of Commodore High's football team? He's so short and puny.
He hardly looks like a football coach to me.
B: Listen, pal.
From what I hear, that guy is one of the best.
His size has nothing to do with his ability to produce a winning team.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

DEAR ABBY: I'm 22, with two children, ages 3 and 4.
I'm divorced for the second time.
I have been dating a man who is 52 years old.
He is financially very well-off and wants to marry me.
He treats me very well and cares for my children.
Abby, do you think marriage between a 52-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman could ever work out?
I like him a lot, but I am not what you would call madly in love with him.
I was madly in love with my first two husbands, and they both treated me like dirt.
I haven't made any promises yet, and this man is not pressuring me, but I need your advice.
What do you think it takes to make a marriage work ?
TWO-TIME LOSER
DEAR T.T.L.: Don't marry anyone while you are still seeking advice.
All that is necessary for a marriage to succeed is for two people to really
need each other.

Why is life worth living? What do you like most about it or want most
from it? From what do you get your most through satisfactions? Are you
substantially like others in your wants, or do your life desire add up to a
distinctive pattern?

A new executive went to his first high-level meeting. At the end of the
conference table sat a fellow who, whenever a tough problem came up,
would say something like, "Well, it never rains, but it pours." or
"It's a long road that has no turning." or "If life gives you lemons,
then make lemonade."
"Exactly what does that guy do?" the new exec asked a colleague after
the meeting.
"He gives us our spirit of unity." was the reply. "We'd all like to
strangle him."

My grandmother and her sister were never at a loss for words, especially
when they got together. Once they were doing the dishes after a big
family dinner, chatting animatedly.
After drying what seemed like an overabundance of the platters, Aunt
Flossie remarked, "Gosh, Pearl, how many of these platters do you have?"
"Just one," Grandma said, "Why?"
They discovered they had been so wrapped up in their talk that every time
Aunt Flossie put the clean platter on the counter, Grandma picked it up
and washed it again.

A man was telling one of his friends the secret of his contented married
life. "My wife makes all the small decisions," he explained, "and I make
all the big ones, so we never interfere in each other's business and
never get annoyed with each other. We have no complaints and no arguments."
"That sounds reasonable." answered his friend sympathetically.
"And what sort of decisions does your wife make?"
"Well," answered the man. "she decides what jobs I apply for, what sort
of house we live in, what furniture we have, where we go for our holidays,
and things like that."
His friend was surprised. "Oh?" he said. "And what do you consider
important decisions then?"
"Well," answered the man, "I decide who should be Prime Minister,
what we should do about the atom bomb, and things like that."

First, I would like to have some discussion about what kind of business you may want to do with us.

A:What do you think of the movie?
B:Well. it was nothing special.
A:I hate the sad ending.
B:I agree.
*
What do you think of~? How do
you like~? I agree대신에 Me, too나 So do I라고 말해도
don't really like를 뜻한다.
It's great, wonderful, fantastic

A:Say, What's your favorite sport?
B:Well. it's hard to say. I like all kinds of sports, but I like tennis the
best.
A:How about a game sometime?
B:Sorry. I only like to watch people play it.
My favorite sport's soccer. I like soccer best. Soccer is the sport
I like
best.
Which do
you like better, playing baseball yourself or watching play it?

A:What would you like to have?
B:I’ll have vegetable soup, beef steak, and orange juice.
A:How do you want your steak?
B:Well-done, please.

May I take your order? 또는 Are you ready to
order?, What would you like(to have)? Well-done, please.는 I
would like to have my steak well-done, pleaes.

Waiter:Are you ready to order now, sir?
Ralph :Yes. I'll have tomato soup, roast beef, mashed potatoes, and
peas.

들겠습니다]는 [I'll have Pulgogi] 주문을 받을 때는 What do you want to
eat?
Are you ready to order? What would you like to have? May I take
your order?

A:Do you like to dance to music?

A:Can you play any musical instruments?
B:No, I can't.
A:That's too bad.
