zipper-gate(지퍼가 뭔지는 아시죠)의 Bill Clinton입니다.
William은 맨 앞에 오니까 first name이고 주어진 이름이니까 given name.
영국에서는 Christian name이라고도 하죠. 김태희에서 태희에 해당되는 거죠.
Jefferson은 중간에 오니까 middle name. 우리는 middle name이 없죠.
Clinton은 마지막에 오니까 last name이고 가족들과 다 같이 공유하는 family name.
영국에서는 surname이라고도 하죠. 김태희에서 김에 해당되죠.
근데 중세 초까지만 해도 last name이 없었어요.
그러다가 같은 마을에 같은 first name을 가진 사람이 많아지자
직업, 출신지, 성격, 아버지 이름 등을 따라 last name을 부르기 시작했답니다.
직업에 따른 성으로는 Carpenter(목수), Smith(대장장이), Baker(빵장수),
Cook(요리사), Tailor(재단사), Clerk(목사) 등이 있고요,
출신지에 따른 것으로는 Moor(황무지에서 온 사람), Street (큰길에 사는 사람),
River (강가에 사는 사람) 등이 있죠.
또, 성격이나 생김새에서 온 성은 Rich (부자), Long (큰 키의),
Brown (피부색이 그으른) 등이 있고요,
아버지의 이름을 딴 성은 Mc이 들어가는 것(McDonald는 Donald의 아들이라는
의미죠)과 -son이 들어가는 것(Johnson은 John의 아들, Robertson은
Robert의 아들이죠)이 있답니다.
last name은 좀 가깝지 않는 사이에서 쓰고 친한 사이가 되면
first name을 쓰죠. 그래서, They are on a first-name basis.이라고 하면
잘 아는 사이라는 뜻이 됩니다.
He can call everybody by his first name.
모든 사람과 다 이름을 부르는 사이라면 아는 사람(acquaintance)이
많다는 거죠.
즉 마당발. He has a wide acquaintance. He gets around a lot.라고도 하죠.
개그맨 남희석씨가 남재벌이라고 하고 다니죠.
영어로는 뭘까요? Rich is his middle name.
사람의 성격이나 특징을 강조하고 싶을 때 ∼ is one's middle name라고 합니다.
예를 들어 정직하면 나지, 내가 한 정직하지∼라고 말하고 싶으면

If honesty has a name, it's my name.
줄이지 않은 원래 이름 full name 그러니까 William Jefferson Clinton은 full name.
Bill은 William의 애칭이죠. 그래서 Bill Clinton으로 알려져 있답니다.

필명은 pen name. 가명은 pseudonym. pseudo-는 가짜를 나타내는 접두사죠

별명은 nickname. nick이 '새기다'는 의미가 있는 거 아시죠.
특징에 의해서 새겨진 이름이니까 별명이죠.
참, 우리 문화를 알리는 의미에서 이렇게 이름을 소개하는 건 어떨까요?
