[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use a pencil(telephone)/ Use your eyes, child! It's right there in front of you!
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
I could use your help this afternoon. I could use you this afternoon.
use eggs in cooking/ All the butter has been used.
used books/ Used cars and trucks were being marketed in this fashion.
She had employed her leisure in reading every book that came in her way./ employ a vacant lot as a playground/ He employs five mechanics.
A writer uses words effectively who knows what ones he should employ in a given context.
Well, you'll just have to utilize what's there.
He exploited the concession to the last penny.(그는 이권을 모두 이용해 먹었다.)
They have exploited that child mercilessly.
He worked the soil.(그는 땅을 갈았다.)/ If the clay is worked in the hands it will soon become soft and malleable.
She's been working him for forty years.

The defense may well raise objections to the court's decision to hear
the case twice a week, instead of the original schedule of once a week.
The defense, pleading for a more leisurely trial, argued the defendants'
health was being damaged and there was not enough time to prepare
from one session to the next, but lately they had abruptly started taking
issue with the judges'``bias'' toward the accused.

Instead of being so concerned with the iniquities of others, they would do well to think more of their own state of moral well-being.

When the results of her mistakes became obvious, she gained a well-deserved reputation for being an egregious blunder.

Although it is based on a real event, this dramatic film is really a mixture of a Hollywood love story and a disaster movie.
At the time of its production it was the most expensive film ever made, in spite of not having well-known stars.
This was partly because of the amazing special effects,
but also because of numerous problems while it was being filmed, which resulted in several months delay.
Although the end of this film is no surprise, it is still incredibly moving.
It was nominated for 14 Oscars, including best film, best director and best actress.

Ecopsychology is a new area of psychology.
Ecopsychologists study humans and their relationships to the environment.
They feel that the environment is very important to our sense of well-being.
In fact, they believe it is central to our happiness.
If we are going to be happy, we need to connect more with nature.
Children are born with this feeling of connection to nature.
They often spend long periods of time with plants, trees, and insects.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

Signs of globalization are everywhere.
From the foreign cars we drive to the foreign food we eat.
Today, the products we buy come from all over the world.
The capital investment that creates these products flows from one country to another with such ease as has never before been seen.
And with these products, came new cultural ideas.
Baseball, Americans' favorite sport, was being challenged by a global import, football, what Americans call soccer.
On the other hand, America influences other countries as well.

Whom, then, do I call educated, since I exclude the arts and sciences and specialties?
First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action;
next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all with whom they associate, tolerating easily and good-naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable to their associates as it is possible to be;
furthermore, those who hold their pleasure always under control and are not duly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature;
finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by successes and do not desert their true selves and become arrogant, but hold their ground steadfastly as intelligent men, not rejoicing in the good things which have come to them through chance rather than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs from their birth.
Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them―these, I contend, are wise and complete men, possessed of all the virtues.

Wherein lies the value of educating aesthetic taste?
The most straightforward answer is seemingly obvious.
There is much pleasure to be derived from appreciation of fine art works, and so providing students the means to appreciate them will make their lives more enjoyable later on.
But this answer itself raises two further questions.
First, does a person's overall aesthetically derived pleasure typically increase when that person is trained to appreciate the 'higher' as opposed to 'lower' art forms?
Second, does appreciation of the 'higher' forms really depend on a person's being educated to appreciate them?
Clearly a third question is implicit here as well, namely: in what sense are the 'higher' forms higher?
The issue of requiring or even encouraging aesthetic education is tied also to the question of whether certain sorts of taste in art are objectively better than others.

Heraclitus pointed out that the world is characterized by opposites.
If we were never ill, we would not know what it was to be well.
If we never knew hunger, we would take no pleasure in being full.
If there were never any war, we would not appreciate peace.
And if there were no winter, we would never see the spring.
Both good and bad have their inevitable place in the order of things, Heraclitus believed.
Without this constant interplay of opposites the world would cease to exist.

It's impossible to treat a child too well. Children are spoiled by being ignored
too much or by harshness, not by kindness. Rich kids are often spoiled not by their
toys and automobiles, but by parents who are too busy to pay much attention to
them.

Whenever someone speaks with prejudice against a group―Catholics, Jews,
Italians, Negroes―someone else usually comes up with a classic line of
defence: "Look at Einstein!" "Look at Carver!" "Look at Toscanini!"
They mean well, these defenders. But their approach is wrong. It is even
bad. What a minority group wants is not the right to have geniuses among
them but the right to have fools and scoundrels without being condemned
as a group.

A great part of our lives is occupied in reverie, and the more imaginative
we are the more varied and vivid this will be. How many of us could face
having our reveries automatically registered and set before us?
We should be overcome with shame. We should cry that we could not really
be as mean, as wicked, as petty, as selfish, as obscene, as snobbish,
as vain, as sentimental, as that. Yet surely our reveries are as much
part of us as our actions, and if there were a being to whom our inmost
thoughts were known we might just as well be held responsible for them
as for our deeds. Men forget the horrible thoughts that wander through
their own minds, and are indignant when they discover them in others.

I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated.
The prestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know
famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account.
The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the persons they come across.
They show the world a mask, often an impressive one, but take care to conceal
their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with
practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that
this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.

These instances, from widely different periods of history, show that increase of skill has not, of itself, insured any increase of human happiness or well-being.

The year will go down in history as a productive one with regard to the international standing of Korean films.
After being steadily presented at well-known international film festivals, Korean films finally crossed the threshold when they won consecutive best director awards at Cannes and Venice.
Director Im Kwon-taek won the best director award at this year's 55th Cannes International Film Festival for his movie "Chihwaseon" in May.

Although it seems simple enough to say that people who are suffering and who have no chance to recover would be better off by being allowed to die,

1. Difficulty in determining who is terminally ill.
Some people who are expected to die sometimes get well.
2. Religious beliefs.
"God gives life; only God can take it away."
3. It could lead to "suicide on demand."
Maybe someday anyone who is unsatisfied with his or her life might be able to receive help in dying.
4. Period of depression.
The person requesting to die might just be going through a temporary phase and might later change his or her mind.

Coincident with concerns about the accelerating loss of species and
habitats has been a growing appreciation of the importance of biological
diversity, the number of species in a particular ecosystem, to the
health of the Earth and human well-being.

Nitrogen, which composes 80 percent of the air we breathe, usually
causes a balmy feeling of well-being at this pressure. At a depth of 5
atmospheres, nitrogen causes symptoms resembling alcohol intoxication,
known as nitrogen narcosis. Nitrogen narcosis apparently results from a
direct effect on the brain of the large amounts of nitrogen dissolved in
the blood. Deep dives are less dangerous if helium is substituted for
nitrogen, because under these pressures helium does not exert a similar
narcotic effect.

Anything that is found to be an impediment to economic growth is a
shameful thing. Call a thing immoral or ugly, a peril to the peace of
the world or to the well-being of future generations. As long as you do
not show it to be uneconomic, you do not really question its right to
exist, grow and prosper.

The pluralistic vision of the human aspiration to live a good life must
not be interpreted on the model of there being a common destination that
we may reach in different ways. The notion of a common destination is
itself deeply at odds with pluralism. If a metaphor is wanted, artistic
creation is perhaps less unsatisfactory than others. We make our lives
the way artists make works of art. We and artists start from some
context, some tradition, some educa- tional influences on us; we are
limited by what we bring to it by way of talents, imagination, and
skill, as well as by the available possibilities and by the demands and
expectations of other people in our context; and then we do what we can,
and we succeed, fail, or banally fall somewhere in between. But the
product, the life or the work of art, is going to be different in each
case, because the contributions made to it by the tradition, by our
individuality, and by the mixture we concoct of the two are also
different.

However, our growing cities resulted in some damage as well as the advantages mentioned.
Unfortunately, most people did not realize the damage.
The rate of growth was so fast, and the needs of industrialized countries were so great, that we did not stop to ask ourselves what was being threatened by these efforts.

Many patients are taught to pretend their white blood cells are knights fighting diseases.

Listen. Um, listen. Something you should... know... um, Rachel and I...
we're kind of a thing.
/ Thing?
Thing, yes. Thing.
Ah, you... have the sex?
No, no, no. Technically the... sex is not... being had, but that's... see, that's not the point.
See, um, the point is that... Rachel and I should be, er, together. You know, and if you get in the.... um...
Bed?
/ No,
that's not where I was going. Er, if you get in the... way, of us becoming a thing, then I would be, well, very sad.

Well, sure, what with it being her funeral and all.

Hey, do you guys know what you're doing for New Year's?
Gee, what?! What is wrong with New Year's?
Nothing for you, you have Paolo. You don't have to face the horrible pressures of this holiday
desperate scramble to find anything with lips just so you can have someone to kiss when the ball drops!! Man, I'm talking loud!
Well, for your information, Paolo is gonna be in Rome this New Year, so I'll be just as pathetic as the rest of you.
Yeah, you wish!
It's just that I'm sick of being a victim of this Dick Clark holiday. I say this year, no dates, we make a pact. Just the six of us- dinner.
Yeah, okay. Alright.
/ Y'know, I was hoping for a little more enthusiasm.
Phoebe, you're on.
/ Oh, oh, good.

What are you guys doing out here?
Uh.. uh.. Well, Joey and I had discussed getting in an early morning racquetball game. But, um, apparently, somebody overslept.
Yeah, well, you don't have your racket.
No, no I don't, because it's being restrung, somebody was supposed to bring me one.
Yeah, well you didn't call and leave your grip size.
Okay, you guys spend waaaay too much time together.

I don't know.
I like her, you know. She's different. There's
uh, somethin' about her.
That you like, we get it. You like her. Great!
Hey, Phoebe, I asked you, and you said it was okay.
Alright, well, maybe now it's not okay.
Okay Well maybe now I'm not okay with it not being okay.
Okay.
알았어

She's still here.
Yes, yes she is.
Didn't I memo you on this?
See, after I let her go,
err, I got a call from her psychiatrist, Dr.
Flanen-nen, Dr. Flanen, Dr. Flan.
And err, he informed me that uh, she took the news rather badly, in fact,
he uh, mentioned the word frenzy.
You're kidding? She seems so...
Oh, no, no. Nina... ..she is
whooo wewee-woo whoo whoo!
In fact, if you asked her right now, she would have no
recollection of being fired at all, none at all.
That's unbelievable.
And yet, believable.
So I decided not to fire her again until I can be
assured that she will be no threat to herself, or others.
I see. I guess you never really know what's goin' on inside
a person's head.
Well, I guess that's why they call it psychology, sir.

So, Monica, how's the ankle?
It's uh...
그거....
Well, why don't you tell them?
You know what, it's feeling a lot better, thank you, um
Well, listen, why don't you two sit down and, and we'll get you some glasses
Okay, listen, I'm thinking, why don't we just tell them who we really are?
It will not be fine.
We'll get in trouble.
Oh, Monica!
Would you stop being such a wuss?
A wuss?
Excuse me for living in the real world, okay?

Uh, Rach, we're running low on resumes over here.
Do you really want a job with Popular Mechanics?
Well, if you're gonna work for mechanics, those are the ones to work for.
Hey, look, you guys, I'm going for anything here, OK?

You want to do my job for me and run the White House?
Good luck. I won't stand in your way.

Unless you need anything, Kyle has you covered.
No, go home.
You did well this weekend.
Thank you, sir.
Oh, and before you go home, can you do me a favor?
Would you swing by my house
and make sure these get to Claire?
Yes, sir.
And thank you, sir, for being so patient.
Okay.

I want you to be deputy campaign manager.
You work under Nash Aarons.
No. I spent years being Peter's crutch. If you just want me there...
Well, of course we want you there to help, but not as a crutch.

You know, when you brought up this idea, I wasn't sold.
It struck me as both desperate and careless.
But then Linda laid out all the pros,

and they clearly outweigh the cons.
I explained our reasoning to Jim and hoped
he wouldn't think I was off my rocker.
I did at first, but the President made some very good arguments.
It's a bold move, Frank. I'm very impressed.
Well, thank you, sir, for being open to the idea.
And thank you, Mr. President, for taking the risk.

Jack, I talked to her.
Thank God. What'd she say?
- She and Janet went to some party. - So are you gonna pick 'em up?
- I don't know where she is. She wouldn't say. - What?
Well, I don't know, maybe I'm being paranoid, but she sounded... different.
I don't know. She told me that she loved me before she hung up. That's not Kim.

Well, to be honest...
for those who asked it, only one answer was acceptable,
so Lynette responded as she always did.
She lied.
