* 한국에서는 봄과 가을에 결혼식을 많이 하지만 미국에서는
6월에 결혼식을 많이 올린다. 미국 처녀들의 꿈은 June bride
즉 '6월의 신부'가 되는 것이다. 결혼식은 wedding ceremony,
신부는 bride, 신랑은 bridegroom, 또는 groom이라 부른다.
주례는 officiator라 한다. 결혼식에서 신부의 아버지가 딸을
신랑에게 '인계'해주는 것을 give away라 한다.
그리고 미국에서는 결혼식을 몇 주일 앞두고 신부를 위한
파티를 열고 살림 도구 등을 선물로 주는 풍습이 있다.
이것은 bridal shower라 한다. 신부가 목욕하는 것으로 오해하면
안되겠죠. I haven't met Mr. Right yet. 라 하면 여태까지
이상적인 남성을 만나지 못했다는 뜻이고 Mr. 대신에 Miss를 쓰면
이상적인 여성을 만나지 못했다는 뜻이 된다.
또한 Prince Charming 은 동화에서 Cinderella와 결혼하는
왕자의 이름인데, 이상적인 결혼상대(남자)를 의미한다.

ceremony =rite : 식, 예식, 형식(formality)
한 가족이 함께 살아가다 보면 많은 의식들을 가지게 됩니다.
그 의식들 중에서도 엄숙하고도, 공식적으로 진행될 수 있는
여러 의식들을 ceremony라고 합니다. 형식적인 면이 있긴
하지만 꼭 필요한 절차죠.
예를 들어 결혼식 a wedding ceremony(a marriage ceremony),
졸업식 a graduation ceremony, 개회식 an opening ceremony
등이 있을 수 있습니다.
이런 공식적인 의식이나 예식에서 사회를 맡은 사람을
master of ceremony(사회자) 라고 하죠. 우리가 흔히 TV프로그램의
사회자를 MC라고 부르죠? 사회자라는 의미로 master of ceremony의
약자인 것입니다.
또한 '형식' 이라는 의미로도 쓰이는데요.
stand on[upon] ceremony 라고 표현하면 '형식을 차리다.'라는
의미로 통합니다. 같은 의미로 without ceremony 라는 표현이 있고,
'소탈하게, 형식을 차리지 않는' 의 의미로 without ceremony라는
표현이 있습니다.
